A 41-year-old man suffering from an actinomyces infection of the cornea of his right eye, was treated unsuccessfully with antibiotics especially intensive local and systematic therapy with penicillin, paracentesis of the anterior chamber with penicillin irrigation, and cautery of the corneal ulcer were fruitless. Finally, the corneal infection was cured by an urgent perforating keratoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short- to medium-term effectiveness of potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser Dermastat in patients with recurrent anterior epistaxis.
METHOD: Fifty-eight patients presenting with recurrent anterior epistaxis were treated using potassium titanyl phosphate laser Dermastat. Those with recurrent epistaxis arising from prominent vessels in Little's area, and/or those for whom treatment with silver nitrate cautery failed, were included. The possible influence of tubal sterilization on the ovarian function is still debated. In this study, we have investigated the course of the main arteries in the parametrium. This study concludes that it is unlikely, from an anatomical point of view, that the ovarian function can be disturbed after tubal sterilization with bipolar cautery, silicone-rings or Filshieclips due to changes in the arterial blood supply.

A case of persistently elevated serum hCG after linear salpingostomy for ectopic pregnancy was noteworthy because laparoscopy 45 days after an initial laparotomy revealed a trophoblastic implant on the uterine fundal serosa. Cautery of the implant led to a rapid decline of serum hCG levels. This is the first report of a pelvic trophoblastic implant following a linear salpingostomy for tubal pregnancy performed at laparotomy.

The intraluminal duodenal diverticulum is an uncommon congenital anomaly which is associated with obstructive symptoms. Treatment of the symptomatic intraluminal duodenal diverticulum can be undertaken either endoscopically with excision by snare cautery or with duodenotomy and excision of the diverticulum. An understanding of the embryologic and anatomic characteristics of the intraluminal duodenal diverticulum is essential in order to select the best treatment and avoid the pitfall of inadvertent pancreatic or bile duct injury.

OBJECTIVE: This review assessed the effectiveness of the nurse-led children's epistaxis clinic in streamlining patient care and avoiding unnecessary general anaesthesia.
