Conventional adsorbents frequently exhibit limited selectivity and inadequate regenerability, particularly when addressing complex wastewater matrices containing coexisting metal ions. To tackle this issue, we present the development of xanthate-modified cellulose nanofibrils (XCNF), which incorporate surface-anchored xanthate groups that function as strong chelating sites. Comprehensive characterization through SEM, elemental analysis, ATR-FTIR, XRD, and XPS validates the successful covalent grafting, significantly enhancing both surface charge density and active site availability. XCNF with …

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has emerged as a promising sustainable biomaterial with potential across multiple fields. However, its intrinsic stiffness and limited toughness restrict its use in applications such as textiles or wearable devices. Spider silk is one of nature's toughest materials, combining high strength and extensibility. The recombinant mini-spidroin (A3I)3-A14, a minimized synthetic variant of a spider silk protein, can be spun under mild conditions into ductile and tough fibers. Here, we present a bioinspired strategy to toughen BC with (A3I)3-A14 by tuning the incorporation rout…

The interfacial electronic structure of biopolymer-metal oxide hybrids determine their stability, yet this structure is still not well understood. Here, we report a density functional theory study of 10 model systems consisting of cellulose and chitosan functionalized with ZnO and V2O5 separately and in ternary combination at the B3LYP/SDD level. According to frontier molecular orbital analysis, hybridization reduces the energy gap in the ternary composites from 7.106 eV for cellulose and 6.908 eV for chitosan to 3.559 eV and 3.496 eV, while the dipole moment increases from 0.536 D to 26.697 D…

Cellulose, as an abundant, renewable, and biocompatible material, is an ideal candidate for suture preparation. Yet, traditional cellulose sutures are non-absorbable because humans lack cellulase. Herein, cellulose-based threads were fabricated using cellulose formate (CF) and collagen (optimal weight ratio 1:1) with surface modification by poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). By incorporating collagen, the strength and toughness of the CF threads were enhanced to match commercial collagen sutures. Moreover, during physiological degradation, a small amount of released formic acid led to the conversion o…

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are crystalline fragments released from cellulose via selective disruption of the fibrillar structure. This study investigated CNC formation by leveraging synergy between a C1/C4-active lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO) TaAA9A and glycoside hydrolase family 45 endoglucanase (EG) NsGH45. The LPMO TaAA9A alone could not liberate CNCs from the cellulose substrate, and the endoglucanase NsGH45 alone yielded limited CNC release; their co-incubation, however, exhibited strong synergy, increasing CNC yields by up to 81% relative to additive enzyme action. Varying…

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic gastrointestinal condition that could benefit from targeted drug delivery strategies to minimise systemic side effects. Conventional therapies often lack site specificity, limiting their effectiveness. Here, emulgels stabilised by cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and reinforced with α-cyclodextrin/polyethylene glycol (α-CD/PEG) supramolecular gels were explored as a novel platform for the local delivery of budesonide to the gastrointestinal tract. CNC-stabilised Pickering emulsions (40-70% v/v oil, 0.5-2 mg·mL⁻¹ CNC) were characterised for droplet size…

Melanocyte (MC) suspension transplantation is a promising treatment for vitiligo, however, the high fluidity of the suspension leading to leakage remains a significant challenge. This study explores bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes as novel scaffolds for MC transplantation, evaluating structural and mechanical properties, as well as the capacity to support cell viability. These membranes were assembled by pre-fibrillated BC nanofibrils, followed by four drying methods - hot-press drying, vacuum oven drying, air drying, and freeze drying - to tailor the material structure. Besides the easy pr…

In this study, dodecyl(triphenyl)phosphonium bromide was successfully grafted onto cellulose molecules of bamboo pulp by ionic interactions, which was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. This modification significantly improved the solubility and spinnability of the pulp. Subsequently, antimicrobial lyocell fibers were prepared from the modified pulp through a dry-jet wet spinning process. Surface morphology, mechanical properties, crystallinity, antimicrobial performance, dyeing properties, moisture absorption, and wash durability of these fibers were systematically investigated. Experimental…

Clay-based hemostatic materials are commercially available devices designed to control massive bleeding. However, their widespread application is hindered by concerns related to material safety and hemostatic efficacy. In this study, a hemostatic aerogel composed of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and Calcium ion-exchanged nanoporous zeolite is developed. CNFs facilitate the in-situ synthesis of nanoporous zeolites, and the zeolites are firmly embedded within the aerogel through abundant hydrogen bonds. Notably, the zeolite loading in the aerogel is only 2.89 wt.%, significantly lower than the 18.…

Microbial infection in open wounds can delay healing and lead to severe complications. This study introduces a bacterial-responsive cellulose-based fabric wound dressing (Fabric-PAC) with integrated antimicrobial and hemostatic functions. Fabric-PAC is chemically modified with polyphosphate (PolyP) and low-dose silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and further functionalized with a phthalocyanine-based photosensitizer via supramolecular interactions on surface. Upon contact with bacteria, the photosensitizer is displaced, exposing PolyP to initiate blood coagulation and platelet-deriven tissue remodel…
