In vivo biocompatibility and biomineralization of calcium silicate cements.

A new mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) material has been developed with a modified composition that requires investigations to support its clinical use. This study evaluated the biocompatibility and biomineralization of this new MTA material and compared it with that of two other MTA cements over time. Tubes containing materials (or empty tubes as controls) were inserted into the subcutaneous tissues of 40 rats. On days 7, 15, 30, 60, and 90, the tubes were removed with the surrounding tissues, which were either stained with haematoxylin and eosin or von Kossa for further analyses or unstained

Cement dust exposition and bronchioalveolitis. A case report.

The goal of the current investigation was to report an unusual case of a worker acutely exposed to big amounts of cement dust. This exposure caused chemical bronchioalveolitis and dermatitis due to chromium contact. This person suffered the exposure when a cement deposit exploded at work. This exposed the worker to big amounts of cement dust. After the accident, the individual suffered dyspnea and bilateral basal pulmonary crackles. The subject also presented an atypical restrictive pattern, which could also be seen on X-rays as 1/1 q/q images of the classification of 2000 of the International

Cement salvage of instrumentation-associated vertebral fractures.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Spinal instrumentation plays a key role in the treatment of spinal instability in patients with metastatic tumors. Poor bone quality, radiation, and diffuse osseous tumor involvement present significant challenges to spinal stabilization with instrumentation and occasionally result in postinstrumentation compression fractures. Vertebral cement augmentation has been effective in the treatment of painful tumor-related compression fractures. Our objective was to describe cement augmentation options in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures associated with spinal

Diagnosis and management of cemental tear: a case report.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

A 32-year-old man complained of swelling after an extraction in the vicinity of the left maxillary premolars. The occlusal surface of the first premolar showed no caries while the second premolar was covered with a crown. Radiographic examination revealed a thin radiolucent defect subgingivally below the cementodentinal junction on the distal aspect. During a review of medical history, the patient presented an extracted fragment that was sent for histopathological examination. A root canal was performed and the defect was closed with mineral trioxide aggregate followed by glass ionomer cement.

Cemented femoral fixation: the North Atlantic divide.

European nations, especially Scandinavian countries, have used cemented fixation since the introduction of total hip arthroplasty. In Sweden, with arguably the best national-level data on prostheses survivorship, >90% of all stems are fixated with cement. In sharp contrast, it is estimated that in the United States, >88% of all femoral stems use cementless technology. This represents a diametrically opposed difference in philosophical approach: the so-called North Atlantic Divide. The departure in North America from cemented femoral stems can be traced to the coinage of the phrase "cement dise

Perspectives and limits for cement kilns as a destination for RDF.

RDF, the high calorific value fraction of MSW obtained by conventional separation systems, can be employed in technological plants (mainly cement kilns) in order to obtain a useful energy recovery. It is interesting and important to evaluate this possibility within the general framework of waste-to-energy solutions. The solution must be assessed on the basis of different aspects, namely: technological features and clinker characteristics; local atmospheric pollution; the effects of RDF used in cement kilns on the generation of greenhouse gases; the economics of conventional solid fuels substit

Femoral cementing technique for hip resurfacing arthroplasty.

The resurgence of metal-metal bearings has renewed interest in hip resurfacing, but a paucity of information exists regarding femoral cementing technique. We developed a laboratory model in which 72 open-cell foam specimens were used to simulate bone. Analyses of two cement viscosities, two foam porosities, and six cementing techniques were performed: manual cement application only, manual application and filling of one quarter of the component with cement, filling of half of the component, manual application and half component filling, full component filling, and manual application and full c

A biomechanical study of periacetabular defects and cement filling.

Periacetabular bone metastases cause severe pain and functional disability in cancer patients. Percutaneous acetabuloplasty (PCA) is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure whereby cement is injected into lesion sites. Pain relief and functional restoration have been observed clinically; however, neither the biomechanical consequences of the lesions nor the effectiveness of the PCA technique are well understood. The objective of this study was to investigate how periacetabular lesion size, cortex involvement, and cement modulus affect pelvic bone stresses and strains under single-legged s

A cemented caval vein filter: case report.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To present a previously undescribed complication of bone cement use during spinal surgery. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Surgical cement reaching the circulation is a frequently described complication. The placement of caval vein filters is a routine measure in specific patients to prevent thrombotic material, usually from deep venous thrombosis in the lower extremities, from reaching the pulmonary circulation. A case of bone cement getting trapped in the caval filter rendering it unremovable has not been published. METHODS: A 66-year-old patient underwen

Cement leakage during vertebroplasty: an underestimated problem?

Overall, vertebroplasty has a low complication rate. Nevertheless, severe complications can occur. The majority of these are related to cement extrusion. The rate of cement leakage is often obtained by X-ray, with only a single leak registration per vertebra. Detection rate of leaks in comparison with CT and inter-observer reliability for X-ray is, in large parts, unknown. We conducted this study to determine the value of fluoroscopy and X-ray used to detect cement leakage as compared to CT scans. Intraoperative findings in lateral fluoroscopy by the surgeon, and postoperative findings in X-ra

The cemented femoral stem: selecting the ideal patient.

A woman who is elderly, lightweight, and low demand has traditionally been considered an ideal candidate for a cemented femoral stem. Patients who are young, heavy, and high demand have been considered higher risk for failure and, therefore, better suited for cementless femoral stems. However, modern cement techniques and implants have improved outcomes in high-risk cohorts, and stress shielding, thigh pain, and osteolysis have emerged as long-term challenges for cementless femoral stems. Recently reported positive bone remodeling around a cemented, triple-tapered, polished, collarless stem be

Glass recycling in cement production--an innovative approach.

An innovative approach of using waste glass in cement production was proposed and tested in a laboratory and cement production plant. The laboratory characterization of 32 types of glass show that the chemical composition of glass does not vary significantly with its color or origin but depends on its application. The alkali content of glass, a major concern for cement production varies from 0 to 22%. For the glass bottles mainly found in Hong Kong waste glasses, the alkali content (Na2O) ranges from 10 to 19% with an average around 15%. There is no significant change of the SO2 content in the

A contraindication for the use of hydroxyapatite cement in the pediatric population.

The authors report on their experience with a particular hydroxyapatite cement in the pediatric population and review cases that elucidate potential limitations of its use in this population. In all patients, the implant was used for recontouring and augmenting the cranial vault. Seven of 15 patients had a direct communication between sinus mucosa and the implant at the time of surgery. Three of the seven patients developed late postoperative inflammatory reactions of the surgical site with delamination of the implant. Each patient required an aggressive irrigation and débridement with removal
