Historical redlining and breast cancer screening in a regional spatial analysis.

BACKGROUND: Redlining, introduced in 1933 by the Homeowners' Loan Corporation, created enduring structural inequities in housing, health care access, and neighborhood investment. These historical patterns may contribute to persistent disparities in breast cancer screening. This study examines how historical redlining, alongside contemporary socioeconomic factors, shapes screening disparities across the University of Kansas Cancer Center (KUCC) catchment area. METHODS: We conducted a census tract-level spatial analysis across 123 counties (Kansas and western Missouri) by linking CDC PLACES bre

Associations between disparities in tobacco retailer density and disparities in tobacco use.

Research has separately established that there are disparities in tobacco use, that greater tobacco retailer density (TRD) is positively associated with tobacco use, and that TRD is greater in high poverty and high racial/ethnic minority neighborhoods. Connecting these topics, this study examined the association between disparities in TRD and disparities in the prevalence of tobacco use among adults and youth. We obtained Ohio data on tobacco use from two statewide adult surveys and two sub-state regional youth surveys (2017-2019). Licensed tobacco retailers in Ohio were geocoded within census

Demographic Inequities in Health Outcomes and Air Pollution Exposure in the Atlanta Area and its Relationship to Urban Infrastructure.

Environmental burdens such as air pollution are inequitably distributed with groups of lower socioeconomic statuses, which tend to comprise of large proportions of racial minorities, typically bearing greater exposure. Such groups have also been shown to present more severe health outcomes which can be related to adverse pollution exposure. Air pollution exposure, especially in urban areas, is usually impacted by the built environment, such as major roadways, which can be a significant source of air pollution. This study aims to examine inequities in prevalence of cardiovascular and respirator

Change and consistency in descriptions of child maltreatment: A comparison of caregivers' perspectives 20 years apart.

Although approximately one-fifth of child maltreatment reports originate with family members, friends, neighbors, or community members, their efforts to identify and report child maltreatment are still not well understood. Nor is it well understood how these individuals' perceptions of what constitutes maltreatment may change over time. This study examined descriptions of behavior perceived as maltreatment by caregivers of minors in Cleveland, Ohio, USA neighborhoods. Data were obtained from two neighborhood-based cross-sectional surveys of caregivers of minors: one conducted in 1995-1996 and

Patterns of asthma mortality in Philadelphia from 1969 to 1991.

BACKGROUND: The rate of mortality from asthma has increased substantially in the United States since 1978. We analyzed the patterns of the rates of death from asthma in Philadelphia between 1969 and 1991. METHODS: The rates of death from asthma were analyzed and compared with trends in the concentrations of major air pollutants: ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter (particles < 10 microns in diameter), and sulfur dioxide. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to study the rates of death from asthma from 1985 to 1991 and their association with race, poverty, se

Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Liver Disease Associated With Poor Food Access and Geographic hot Spots Among Liver Transplant Candidates.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease (MASLD) and frailty share metabolic risk factors. We evaluated the relationship between poor food access and the prevalence of MASLD and frailty among patients with cirrhosis being evaluated for LT and visualized the geospatial clustering of MASLD and frailty. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional cohort study of adults at a single center. Poor food access was defined at the census-tract level using U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Access Data as low-income and low-access (LILA) areas, also referred to as food deser

Climate Vulnerability and Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Disease in the United States.

BACKGROUND: There is an incomplete understanding of the impact of climate change on cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome. Although climate change affects all Americans, certain communities and individuals may suffer a disproportionate burden. Therefore, this study's objective was to explore the relationship between the Climate Vulnerability Index domains and the prevalence of CKM components in the United States. METHODS: This cross-sectional study obtained health outcomes from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Population Level Analysis and Community Estimates (2021) and ass

Depression risk and resilience in a diverse sample of older adults in the United States.

Living in poor and physically deteriorating neighborhoods is associated with heightened likelihood of experiencing depression. At the same time, not all people experience their neighborhoods in the same way. We predicted and tested the possibility that variability in this association can be explained by the social support that people derive both from their personal networks and other people residing in the same neighborhood, and that this moderation varies by race/ethnicity. Health and Retirement Study data (2018/2020 waves) were used to evaluate the role of individual-level and contextual ris

Socio-Ecologic Influences on Weight Trajectories Among Children with Obesity Living in Rural and Urban Settings.

Background: Childhood obesity is a risk factor for poor cardiovascular, metabolic, and respiratory health. The studies examining influences of socio-ecologic factors on weight trajectories using longitudinal data are limited, often examine single measures (e.g., proximity to parks), and have not examined the specific trajectories of children with obesity. Methods: We examined influences on weight among 1518 children, 6-12 years of age, who had obesity using body mass index (BMI) criteria. BMI slope trajectories were categorized as decreasing, flat, or increasing, with a median of 2.1 years of

Geospatial Analysis of Social Determinants of Health Identifies Neighborhood Hot Spots Associated With Pediatric Intensive Care Use for Life-Threatening Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health are associated with asthma prevalence and healthcare use in children with asthma, but are multifactorial and complex. Whether social determinants similarly influence exacerbation severity is not clear. OBJECTIVE: Composite measures of social determinants of health and readmission outcomes were evaluated in a large regional cohort of 1,403 school-age children admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for asthma. METHODS: Residential addresses were geocoded and spatially joined to census tracts. Composite measures of social vulnerability and c

Why Does Child Maltreatment Occur? Caregiver Perspectives and Analyses of Neighborhood Structural Factors Across Twenty Years.

Research on caregivers' views of factors that contribute to child maltreatment and analyses of neighborhood structural factors offer opportunities for enhancing prevention and intervention efforts. This study compared explanations of the factors that contribute to child maltreatment in a neighborhood-based sample of adult caregivers at two-time points: 1995-1996 and 2014-2015 along with analyses of neighborhood structural conditions during the same period. The study sample consisted of two cross-sectional subsamples: 400 adult caregivers in 20 census tracts in Cleveland, Ohio from a 1995-1996

Access to healthy food retailers among formerly incarcerated individuals.

OBJECTIVE: To assess access to healthy food retailers among formerly incarcerated individuals. DESIGN: Using linked data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health and the Modified Retail Food Environment Index, the present study applies multivariate logistic regression to assess the association between incarceration and (i) living in a food desert and (ii) having low access to healthy food retailers. To account for unobserved heterogeneity, additional analyses are performed comparing formerly incarcerated individuals with persons arrested or convicted for a crime but

Declining rates of high-grade cervical lesions in young women in Connecticut, 2008-2011.

Vaccines that prevent infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18 that are known to cause cervical cancer have been available in the United States since 2006. High-grade cervical lesions are important for monitoring early vaccine impact because they are strong surrogates for cancer yet can develop within years after infection as opposed to decades. Trends in high-grade cervical lesions including cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grades 2, 2/3, and 3 and adenocarcinoma in situ among women ages 21 to 39 years old were examined using a statewide surveillance registry in Connecticut

[Methods to smooth mortality indicators: application to analysis of inequalities in mortality in Spanish cities [the MEDEA Project]].

Although there is some experience in the study of mortality inequalities in Spanish cities, there are large urban centers that have not yet been investigated using the census tract as the unit of territorial analysis. The coordinated project <<Socioeconomic and environmental inequalities in mortality in Spanish cities. The MEDEA project>> was designed to fill this gap, with the participation of 10 groups of researchers in Andalusia, Aragon, Catalonia, Galicia, Madrid, Valencia, and the Basque Country. The MEDEA project has four distinguishing features: a) the census tract is used as the basic

Characterizing Populations Based on Proximity to a Fragile X Syndrome Specialty Clinic.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a rare condition that can require lifelong specialized care for optimal management. We describe census-based characteristics of general U.S. populations defined by proximity to FXS specialty clinics to better understand potential barriers to access. We used Geographic Information System software to estimate drive times from U.S. census tract centroids to FXS clinics. Of the contiguous U.S. population, 36.4% lives ≤1 hour from the closest FXS clinic in the same state; 32.4% live >1 to 4 hours, 7.3% live >4 hours, and 23.8% have no FXS clinic in their state. Neighbourhood environment and the incidence of depressive symptoms among middle-aged African Americans.

AIM: To investigate the association between attributes of subject location and incidence of clinically relevant levels of depressive symptoms (CRLDS), and to investigate whether an association remained after adjusting for individual-level factors using data from the population-based African American Health Study. METHODS: An 11-item depression scale (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale) was obtained at baseline and 3 years later through in-home evaluations. Census tract and block group deprivation indices were obtained from the 2000 census. The external appearance of the block w

Association between spatial social polarisation and high blood pressure in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Using data from the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) and the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study, we investigate the association between socioeconomic polarisation and blood pressure outcomes in black and white adults. We also validate previous findings that joint racial/ethnic and income measures of spatial social polarisation (SSP) outperform single domain measures. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using a retrospective cohort combining CHS (recruited 1989-1990 and 1992-1993) and REGARDS (recruited 2003-2007). The study includ
