Chiral separation method development was carried out for eslicarbazepine acetate and its (R)-enantiomer on diverse chiral stationary phases. Better chiral selectivity was observed on cellulose tris-(3,5-dichlorophenylcarbamate) immobilized column (Chiralpak IC-3). Under polar organic mode (POM), with 100% acetonitrile as mobile phase and 0.5 ml/min flow, a resolution close to three was achieved. With normal phase (NP) mobile phase consisting dichloromethane:ethanol (90:10, v/v) and 1.0 ml/min flow, a resolution close to six was achieved. Detection was done by UV at 220 and 240 nm respectively.

SnSe2 is an anisotropic binary-layered material with rich physics, which could see it used for a variety of potential applications. Here, we investigate the gas-sensing properties of SnSe2 using first-principles calculations and verify predictions using a gas sensor made of few-layer SnSe2 grown by chemical vapor deposition. Theoretical simulations indicate that electrons transfer from SnSe2 to NO2, whereas the direction of charge transfer is the opposite for NH3. Accurate determination of fatty acids in fresh forage is very important when studying biohydrogenation. Fatty acids from fresh alfalfa were extracted by hexane:isopropanol (H:IP, 3:2 vol/vol) in 3 sequential extractions. The percentage and profile of fatty acids from each of the 3 extractions were evaluated by a randomized complete block design with repeated measures in space. Genetic disorders of amino acid and fatty acid metabolism can be detected with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). MS/MS screening of mice subjected to chemical mutagenesis (see the related article beginning on page 434) defined a new disorder of branched-chain amino acid metabolism resembling human maple syrup urine disease. This approach has general application to the discovery of gene function in developmental and metabolic disorders.
