Cuproptosis is involved in copper-induced hepatotoxicity in chickens.

Copper (Cu) is an essential trace element, but it is also a ubiquitous environmental pollutant that threatens public health. Cuproptosis is a recently discovered cell death mode that unlike other programmed cell death, characterized by proteotoxic stress due to lipoylated protein aggregation and iron-sulfur cluster protein loss. Chickens as a high-trophic-level non-mammalian vertebrate that easily absorb and accumulate copper from the environment and food, but it is unclear whether the underlying molecular mechanisms that cause their hepatotoxicity under natural copper stress are related to cu…

A Vaccine to Prevent Egg Layer Peritonitis in Chickens.

A series of studies was undertaken in specific-pathogen-free white leghorn chickens for the development of a chicken model of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) peritonitis. Once established, this model was then used to measure the effectiveness of a siderophore receptor and porin proteins (SRP®) APEC vaccine. Initially, five pilot studies were performed to compare the E. coli serotype, challenge route, and dose of inoculum that resulted in pathologies characteristic of the peritonitis observed in commercial layer facilities, such as widespread organ infection, atrophy, discoloration, co…

ISOFLURANE RESPIRATORY ANESTHETIC INDEX IN CHICKENS (GALLUS GALLUS DOMESTICUS).

Respiratory depression from isoflurane seems to be greater in birds than in mammals. Isoflurane respiratory anesthetic index (AI) has only been evaluated in ducks (Anas platyrhynchos), which indeed showed a lower AI compared to mammals, but the isoflurane AI for other avian species is not known. The aim of this study was to evaluate the isoflurane AI in chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus). Six adult hens were anesthetized with isoflurane for determination of the minimum anesthetic concentration (MAC) using the bracketing method. During a second anesthetic event, the isoflurane AI was determine…

Pathogenicity of Chlamydia gallinacea in chickens after oral inoculation.

Chlamydia gallinacea is a recently discovered and widespread obligate intracellular bacterium in chickens. In chickens, infections appear to be asymptomatic, but can result in reduced weight gain in broilers. Molecular typing revealed C. gallinacea is genetically diverse which might lead to differences in pathogenic potential between strains. However, studies about the pathogenesis of different C. gallinacea strains are still limited. In this study, the pathogenesis of C. gallinacea strain NL_G47 was investigated in three consecutive animal experiments. The first experiment served as a pilot i…

Evaluation of young chickens challenged with aerosolized Salmonella Pullorum.

Salmonella enterica serovar Pullorum (S. Pullorum) is an important pathogen specific to avian species, which poses a serious threat to the poultry industry. The transmission of S. Pullorum occurs both horizontally and vertically but the airborne transmission of S. Pullorum has been neglected historically. In this study, the effects of aerosolized S. Pullorum on young chickens were investigated. The results showed that the colonization and morbidity induced by bioaerosol infection are dose dependent. The bacteria colonized in chicken lung for more than 14 days following the exposure to ≥ 1.25 ×…

Causes of Normal Mortality in Commercial Egg-Laying Chickens.

In a large population of animals, it is normal to have some die each day from causes not related to disease, which is often referred to as natural causes. In poultry production, this phenomenon is commonly referred to as daily mortality. In egg-producing chickens, many of the natural causes of death are associated with making an egg. The causes of normal mortality in commercial egg-laying chicken flocks have been described very little to date. A commercial chicken egg farm, housing approximately two million single-comb white leghorn chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) in 16 egg-producing flock…

Meat Juice Serology for Toxoplasma Gondii Infection in Chickens.

Toxoplasma gondii is an important foodborne zoonosis. Free-range chickens are at particularly high risk of infection and are also excellent indicators of soil contamination by oocysts. In the present study, hearts of 77 free-range chickens were collected at slaughter. T. gondii meat juice enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed with a commercial kit, following validation with positive controls, from experimentally infected chickens, and negative ones. Out of 77 samples, only 66 gave sufficient meat juice for serology. Of these, 24 (36.4%) were positive for T. gondii considering the 5*s…

Immunomodulation of chickens with the nonionic block polymer T150R1.

Chickens injected subcutaneously at one day of age with oil-in-water emulsions of the nonioinic block polymer T150R1 developed higher titres to sheep erythrocytes and killed Brucella abortus than did untreated chickens when they were immunised with the antigens one and two weeks later. The increase was IgM only. Cell-mediated immunity was not affected as measured by blastogenic responses. Morphometric analysis of tissue sections of bursae of Fabricius suggested the polymers were stimulating more rapid migration of B cells to peripheral organs.
