Risk Factors for Maltreatment in Siblings of Abused Children.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between child maltreatment (abuse and neglect) in one sibling and that in another as well as associated risk factors. METHODS: The participants were 520 sibling pairs enrolled in a population-based birth cohort study in Brisbane, Australia (N = 1040). Exposure to suspected child maltreatment was measured by linkage with state child protection agency data. Self-reports of childhood sexual abuse were also collected at the 21-year follow-up. RESULTS: There were notifications in both children for 8.5% of the sibling pairs (n = 44). A notification in the fir

Child understandings of the causation of childhood burn injuries: Child activity, parental domestic demands, and impoverished settings.

BACKGROUND: Burns are a global public health problem. In South Africa, the rate of paediatric burn deaths is 5 times higher than other upper middle-income countries, with concentrations in impoverished settings. Globally, the majority of research focuses on expert and caregiver descriptions of burn occurrence, causation, and prevention, with limited consideration of children's perspectives. This study investigated children's understanding of the causation and prevention of childhood burns. METHODS: Data were collected from eighteen 10- to 11-year-old children living in selected impoverished,

Community-based approaches to address childhood undernutrition and obesity in developing countries.

Community-based approaches have been the mainstay of interventions to address the problem of child malnutrition in developing societies. Many programs have been in operation in several countries for decades and originated largely as social welfare, food security and poverty eradication programs. Increasingly conceptual frameworks to guide this activity have been developed as our understanding of the complex nature of the determinants of undernutrition improves. Alongside this evolution, is the accumulation of evidence on the types of interventions in the community that are effective, practical

Child Only Kinship Care Cases:The Unintended Consequences of TANF Policies for Families Who Have Health Problems and Disabilities.

The passage of the Personal Responsibility Work Opportunities Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) in 1996 changed the way America sought to help its most vulnerable citizens. The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) legislation required families to work first. Many families with young children found the stringent requirements of TANF too restrictive for their needs. In this study a number of TANF customers were either physically ill or suffered mental health problems thus preventing them from finding suitable employment. Additionally they may have children who have health problems, which pre

Reciprocal influences between girls' conduct problems and depression, and parental punishment and warmth: a six year prospective analysis.

Although the reciprocal effects of parenting and child behavior have long been recognized, the emphasis of empirical study in the field of developmental psychopathology has been on parenting effects on children. For girls in particular, little is known about unique parenting effects on conduct problems in comparison to depression, or vice versa. In the current study, data from the large-scale (n = 2,451) Pittsburgh Girls Study were used to examine the reciprocal relations between parenting and child behavior over a six year period (child ages 7-12 years). Girls and their caregivers (85% of who

Impact on family of survivors of congenital diaphragmatic hernia repair: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: We hypothesized that long-term impact on the family of survivors of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) would vary based on the child's current clinical problems and clinical severity, family income, insurance, and out-of-pocket expenses. METHODS: Parents of a retrospective cohort of 53 CDH survivors who underwent repair at Children's Hospital Boston in Massachusetts from 1991 through 1999 completed the Impact on Family Scale (IFS), the Child Health Ratings Inventories General Health Module Parent Report, a rating of their child's clinical severity, an inventory of curre

Impact of parental migration on psychosocial well-being of children left behind: a qualitative study in rural China.

BACKGROUND: Tens of millions of rural "left-behind children (LBC)" in China grow up experiencing prolonged separation from their migrant worker parents. This study aimed to explore how children are affected by parental migration, from the perspectives of children, parents, and grandparents, focusing on the experiences of prolonged parent-child separation and relationship dynamics in the extended family. METHODS: Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted in a migrant-sending rural area of eastern China. Participants included 25 children (aged 7 to 14), 17 parents, and 13 grandparents, fro

Re-referral to child protective services: the influence of child, family, and case characteristics on risk status.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines child, family, and case characteristics that impact rates of re-referral to Child Protective Services (CPS) using data on all closed CPS investigations for the state of Rhode Island between 2001 and 2004. METHOD: A longitudinal dataset of all referrals to CPS was created using state submissions to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS). After excluding children whose initial CPS investigation resulted in removal from the home, a Cox proportional hazards model was tested to examine factors impacting the likelihood of re-referral. RESULTS: C

The impact of family stress and resilience on child development: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Children grow up spending most of their time within the family social environment, where they can experience stressful situations such as marital conflict, a non-cohesive environment, parental alcohol use disorder, parental depression, and other parental mental health issues. All these factors are associated with children's developmental delays. We aimed to conduct a scoping review on associations between family stress and family resilience and child development delays to examine familial conditions associated with child development. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of observ

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participation gaps within a pediatric leukemia clinical trial cohort.

Poverty-exposed children with cancer are more likely to experience adverse outcomes. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits improve food insecurity and child health outcomes, and could be used to mitigate disparities. We conducted a secondary analysis of parent-reported data collected in a frontline pediatric leukemia trial (NCT03020030) to assess SNAP eligibility (proxied by other means-tested program participation) and participation. At diagnosis, 105/287 families (37%) were SNAP-eligible, of whom 53 (50%) were SNAP participants. At 6 months, 104/257 families (41%) were SN

Incorporating multifaceted mental health prevention services in community sectors-of-care.

This article proposes a framework for embedding prevention services into community sectors-of-care. Community sectors-of-care include both formal and grassroot organizations distributed throughout a community that provide various resources and services to at-risk children and their families. Though the child population served by these organizations is often at elevated risk for mental health problems by virtue of children's exposure to difficult life circumstances (poverty, maltreatment, homelessness, domestic violence, etc.) these children face many barriers to accessing evidence-based preven

The Association of Race With Decreased Access to Pediatric Hearing Healthcare in the United States.

Successful intervention to support a child with congenital hearing loss requires early identification and consistent access to frequent professional services. In the early 2000s, the United States implemented an initiative, Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI), to provide timely identification and treatment of congenital hearing loss. This national program aims to screen hearing by 1 month of age, diagnose hearing loss by 3 months of age, and provide intervention to infants with hearing loss by 6 months of age. To date, the United States is successfully implementing hearing screenin

Challenges of dealing with migrant brick kiln workers.

Brick kilns in rural India exemplify extreme poverty and exploitation, as seasonal migrant labourers work long hours for minimal pay, living in cramped, poorly ventilated dwellings. Children often begin working at a young age, with irregular or no schooling. Access to healthcare is severely limited, with maternal care, immunisation, and disease screening being sporadic and follow-up rare. Poor nutrition and widespread substance use further compromise health. Lacking identification or permanent addresses, these families are excluded from social welfare schemes. This situation reflects a profoun

Hypovolaemic shock by rat bites. A paradigmatic case of social deprivation.

This report describes an unusual complication of a comparatively common problem of rat bites, causing a near fatal case of hypovolaemic shock. An 8 month old girl was bitten on her head and hands by Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) while sleeping after falling from her parent's bed. She could not be attended to because of her parents' alcoholic condition. She was found in hypovolaemic shock. She required ventilatory and haemodynamic support for five days. At late follow up, the child had no medical problem. In this case, evident social risk factors include extreme poverty, poor hygiene, and rat

Socioeconomic status, height, and obesity in children.

The substantial increase in the prevalence of child obesity over recent decades and its association with a number of negative health and economic outcomes suggests its strong potential as an influence on the lifecourse development of health and productivity. This paper evaluates interactive effects between family socioeconomic status (SES) and height on child obesity in the United States. Using the 1999-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), the results of this paper confirm previous findings that taller children exhibit greater propensity towards obesity as measured

Experiences of familial acceptance-rejection among transwomen of color.

Because of the stigma associated with transgenderism, many transwomen (biological males who identify as female or transgender) experience rejection or abuse at the hands of their parents and primary caregivers as children and adolescents. The Parental Acceptance-Rejection (PAR) theory indicates that a child's experience of rejection may have a significant impact on their adult lives. The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative analysis of adult transwomen of color's experiences with caregivers, guided by PAR theory. Twenty transwomen of color completed semi-structured interviews exp

Effect of teenage pregnancy on educational disabilities in kindergarten.

Teenage pregnancies have become a public health issue because of their observed negative effects on perinatal outcomes and long-term morbidity. The association of young maternal age and long-term morbidity is usually confounded, however, by the high prevalence of poverty, low level of education, and single marital status among teenage mothers. The authors assess the independent effect of teenage pregnancy on educational disabilities and educational problems in a total population of children who entered kindergarten in Florida in 1992--1994 and investigate how controlling for potentially confou

Demographic analysis of childhood pedestrian injuries.

Factors in a child's living environment and socioeconomic background that contribute to the risk of pedestrian injury were studied. In 1982, in the city of Memphis, there were 210 pedestrian injuries among children aged 0 to 14 years, a rate of 138/100,000 children. The injured child was most often male, with mean age of 7.3 years; the child was usually struck while crossing the street between intersections, most commonly during the hours from 2 to 7 PM. Pedestrian injuries occurred in 81 of the 142 census tracts in the city. Compared with census tracts without reported injuries, these tracts

Expansion and commentary on a two generation approach to prenatal opioid exposure - a commentary on Conradt et al. (2023).

Early child neurodevelopment, including psychopathology, is influenced by a myriad of factors and interactions. These factors are both intrinsic to the caregiver-child dyad such as genetics and epigenetics as well as extrinsic such as social environment and enrichment. Additional layers of complexity may be at play within families with parental substance use, as outlined by Conradt et al. (2023) in their review article titled "Prenatal Opioid Exposure: A Two-Generation Approach to Conceptualizing Risk for Child Psychopathology.". Conradt et al. provide an overarching synthesis of many findings
