Measurement of time processing ability and daily time management in children with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Improvement is needed in methods for planning and evaluating interventions designed to facilitate daily time management for children with intellectual disability, Asperger syndrome, or other developmental disorders. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to empirically investigate the hypothesized relation between children's time processing ability (TPA), daily time management, and self-rated autonomy. Such a relationship between daily time management and TPA may support the idea that TPA is important for daily time management and that children with difficulties in TPA might benefi

Motor perseveration during an "A not B" task in children with intellectual disabilities.

This study was designed to identify perseverative reaching tendencies in children with intellectual disabilities (ID), over a period of 1 year, by using a version of the Piagetian "A not B" task modified by Smith, Thelen, Titzer, and McLin (1999). Nine children (4.8 years old at the beginning of the study) with intellectual disabilities (ID) (eight with mild ID; one with moderate ID) were assessed every 3 months for approximately 1 year, totaling four assessments. The results indicate that in a majority of the cases perseveration was resilient, and that the visual system decoupled from the rea

Relationship among challenging, repetitive, and communicative behaviors in children with severe intellectual disabilities.

We used experimental and descriptive functional analyses and lag sequential analyses to examine the functional and temporal relationship among the self-injurious (SIB), potentially injurious, repetitive, challenging, and pragmatic communicative behaviors of 6 children with intellectual disabilities. Functional analyses revealed social function for SIB, potentially injurious, and repetitive behaviors across 5, 4, and 5 participants, respectively. Sixteen functionally equivalent response classes were identified across participants using both experimental and naturalistic observation data. Repeti

EEG coherence in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and comorbid reading disabilities.

This study investigated EEG coherence differences between two groups of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder Combined type (AD/HD), with or without comorbid Reading Disabilities (RD), and normal control subjects. Each group consisted of 20 children between the ages of 8 and 12 years, and groups were matched on age and gender. EEG was recorded during an eyes-closed resting condition from 21 monopolar derivations. Wave-shape coherence was calculated for 8 intrahemispheric electrode pairs (4 in each hemisphere), and 8 interhemispheric electrode pairs, within each of the delta, t

Children with severe developmental disabilities and behavioral disorders have increased special healthcare needs.

We studied whether children with severe developmental disabilities (SDDs) who have a comorbid behavioral disorder also have higher rates of special healthcare needs (SHCNs). We used a matched-comparison control group design to establish whether SHCNs were higher in children with SDDs with behavioral disorders versus children with SDDs without behavioral disorders. Thirty-six children were matched for age (mean 12 y 6 mo; range 5 y 2 mo-18 y 8 mo), sex (24 males, 12 females), ethnicity (22 non-white), mental retardation level (22 moderate, eight severe, six profound), and Diagnostic and Statist

Further evaluation of emerging speech in children with developmental disabilities: training verbal behavior.

The conceptual basis for many effective language-training programs are based on Skinner's (1957) analysis of verbal behavior. Skinner described several elementary verbal operants including mands, tacts, intraverbals, and echoics. According to Skinner, responses that are the same topography may actually be functionally independent. Previous research has supported Skinner's assertion of functional independence (e.g., Hall & Sundberg, 1987; Lamarre & Holland, 1985), and some research has suggested that specific programming must be incorporated to achieve generalization across verbal operants (e.g

Changing from oral to enteral feeding: impact on families of children with disabilities.

The number of children in the U.K. who are being fed enterally at home is increasing. Feeding by nasogastric or gastrostomy tube may not seem particularly abnormal to nurses who care for sick children. However, the initiation of tube feeding can have a significant impact on both the child and the family. Research related to children with disabilities who have feeding problems is focused around the views of their mothers because they are often the main carers of these children. However, eating is a social activity in our society and tube feeding will have an effect on other members of the famil

Locus and nature of perceptual phonological deficit in Spanish children with reading disabilities.

The aims of this study were (a) to determine whether Spanish children with reading disabilities (RD) show a speech perception deficit and (b) to explore the locus and nature of this perceptive deficit. A group of 29 children with RD, 41 chronological age-matched controls, and 27 reading ability-matched younger controls were tested on tasks of speech perception. The effect of linguistic unit (word vs. syllable) and type of phonetic contrast (voicing, place and manner of articulation) were analyzed in terms of the number of errors and the response time. The results revealed a speech perception d

Relationship between home literacy environment and reading achievement in children with reading disabilities.

Past research has indicated that a significant relationship exists between young children's early home literacy environment and their reading-related skills. However, this relationship has rarely been investigated among older children with reading disabilities (RD). In the present study, the relationship between parent and child home literacy activities and children's academic functioning was investigated with a sample of 65 elementary-age children with RD. The results indicated that children's home literacy activities were not significantly related to any of their academic abilities, whereas

Oral bisphosphonates to treat disuse osteopenia in children with disabilities: a case series.

Children with congenital conditions who are nonambulatory have been observed to have pathologic fractures due to disuse osteopenia. Data support the use of intravenous bisphosphonates to treat this in children with disabilities, but there are no data to guide the use of oral bisphosphonate medication. Ten nonambulatory children with disuse osteopenia secondary to either static brain injury or spina bifida were started on alendronate. Investigators completed a chart review of each subject. There were 17 fractures before starting alendronate and 1 fracture in the follow-up period. All children w

Severe sleep disturbance and daytime challenging behaviour in children with severe learning disabilities.

Sleep problems are common in children with severe learning difficulties. Children with sleep problems are reported to have more behaviour problems, but daytime challenging behaviour has not been examined specifically. The current study was concerned with associations between sleep problems and challenging behaviour, as well as describing other clinical features of the childrens' sleep, as reported by parents. All children in the series showed some form of sleep disturbance, with settling problems, night waking and early waking in 44% of the sample. Children with sleep problems showed significa

Energy expenditure of children and adolescents with severe disabilities: a cerebral palsy model.

Spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy (SQCP) is a severe disability that is associated with abnormal physical activity, body composition, and food intake and with frequent malnutrition. This study examined the pattern of dietary intake, anthropometry, and energy expenditure in a group of subjects with SQCP aged 2-18 y and a normal control group. The energy expenditure pattern was determined from resting energy expenditure (REE, n = 61 SQCP; n = 37 control group) by using indirect calorimetry and from total energy expenditure (TEE, n = 32 SQCP; n = 32 control group) by using the doubly labeled wa

Do children with disabilities have the same opportunities to play as children without disabilities? Evidence from the multiple indicator cluster surveys in 38 low and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Play is essential for the cognitive, social, and emotional development of all children. Disparities potentially exist in access to play for children with disabilities, and the extent of this inequity is unknown. METHODS: Data from 212,194 children aged 2-4 years in 38 Low and Middle-Income Countries were collected in the UNICEF supported Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (2017-2020). Disability was assessed by the Washington Group-Child Functioning Module. Logistic regression models were applied to investigate the relationship between disability and play opportunities, controlling

Enhancing addition fact fluency in children with mild intellectual disabilities: simultaneous prompting with performance feedback.

BACKGROUND: The development of mathematical skills in students with intellectual disabilities can facilitate greater independence in everyday life. The ability to perform basic addition facts (BAFs) with fluency can facilitate the learning process of mathematics and the ability to perform quickly and correctly on a subject. This study examined the impact of simultaneous prompting with performance feedback (SP-PF) on fluency in BAFs. METHODS: Three high school students with mild intellectual disabilities participated in the study, which employed a multiple-probe, across-participants design. R

Characterizing Disabilities in Preschool Aged Children with Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome with the ICF Model.

Understanding functioning and disabilities in children with Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) is essential for health planning. We describe disabilities present in children with CZS followed in a reference hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, based on the biopsychosocial model of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). This was a cohort study of children >3 years of age with CZS. Disability was characterized through outcomes related to ICF components assessed via clinical and motor development evaluations. Among 50 children, with a median age of 40 months, 47
