Pediculus humanus capitis is an ancient human parasite, probably inherited from pre-hominid times. Infestation appears as a recurrent health problem throughout history, including in pre-Columbian populations. Here, we describe and discuss the occurrence of pre-Columbian pediculosis in the Andean region of the Atacama Desert. Using a light microscope and scanning electron microscopy, we studied a highly infested Maitas Chiribaya mummy from Arica in northern Chile dating to 670-990 calibrated years A.D. The scalp and hair of the mummy were almost completely covered by nits and adult head lice. L…

This article presents the history of typhoid fever in Chile since its definition as a clinical entity until our days. From this history is evident the long lasting confusion with typhus (rickettsial spotted fever) in Chile although the identity and characteristics of typhoid fever had been established in the first half of nineteenth century in Europe. This confusion could be explained because some clinical features are similar in both diseases (high fever and delirium) and because of its occurrence in poor hygienic conditions. This misconception was resolved only during 1918 on occasion of a m…

UNLABELLED: The incidence of Chlamydia pneumoniae in community-acquired pneumonia in children was studied prospectively in 112 children aged 1 mo to 14 y. Diagnosis of C. pneumoniae was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on nasopharyngeal aspirates and serology by the microimmunofluorescence test on a single serum specimen. Three (2.7%) cases of pneumonia due to this agent were diagnosed by both PCR and serology. C. pneumoniae was not found in any of 62 children below 5 y of age. In the age group 5-8 y, only 1/30 (3%) was found positive, and in the age group 9-14 y, C. pneumoniae was

We report a 26 years old asymptomatic female that expelled spontaneously a 39 proglottid strobila. The taxonomic study of proglottids and eggs found in the stool examination concluded that the patient was infected by Diphyllobothrium pacificum. This infection was probably acquired by the ingestion of raw fish (Sciaena deliciosa) with lemon in a traditional plate called "cebiche". She was treated with a single dose of praziquantel in a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight. After 24 h of treatment there were no scolices on feces. The patient did not have anemia. All eight family members studied, did not

At the Regional Hospital of Temuco, 670 adult and children patients, with intestinal complaints, were studied to determine the prevalence of infection by enteroparasites or commensals in a general way, and by Blastocystis hominis in a particular attempt. A coproparasitological study was carried out using a modified Telemann method. Infection by parasites and/or commensals was demonstrated in 446 (66.6%) patients. The most frequent agent was B. hominis (35.8%) followed by Giardia intestinalis (22.5%) among the protozoa. The frequencies of helminths and commensals were 7.7 and 42.5% respectively

This study analyzes the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) among patients with rheumatic valvular heart disease (VHD) in Chile. Coronary angiography was performed in all patients referred to cardiac catheterization with VHD who were over age 50 years and who had angina or ECG signs of ischemia. A total of 100 patients entered the study. Significant CAD (greater than 50% obstruction) was found in 14% of the cases: 7% in patients with mitral valve disease (MVD), 18% in aortic valve disease (AVD), and 21% in combined mitral and aortic valve disease (MAVD). Angina was present in 14% of th…

Late fertility is a growing global phenomenon, but midlife mothers continue to be subject to social prejudice. This article introduces the notion of reproductive ageism as an epistemic tool to explore the cultural age norms underlying reproduction and understand how midlife mothers receive, resist, and resignify social prejudice by framing their identities as good mothers and their childrearing practices as good mothering. Drawing on qualitative data produced through 40 interviews on the transition to motherhood with Chilean women, the findings reveal that age remains an important cultural mar…

Cats attended at a veterinary clinic in Magallanes, Chile, were screened for Sporothrix brasiliensis in their claws. Five of 140 screened cats were positive, with three of them being symptomatic. INTRODUCTION: Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), which include hallucinations and delusional experiences, are usually present in healthy populations, and their persistence, quality, and severity are associated with the development of psychiatric diseases, including schizophrenia and other poor psychosocial outcomes. Urbanicity, depression, and other psychosocial stressors have been associated with PLEs. However, evidence of PLEs in Latin American (LATAM) countries is still scarce, and there are no studies about PLEs in Chile. The main aim of this study is to describe the prevalence of PLEs in …
