Transcription factor WRKY53 transcriptionally activates sensitive to proton rhizotoxicity 1 to promote C-repeat binding factors 1 and 3 mediated chilling tolerance in apple.

Chilling stress limits apple (Malus domestica) growth and productivity, particularly in spring, when chilling events can severely impair bud break and early shoot development. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying chilling adaptation in apple remain incompletely understood. Here, we identified the C2H2 zinc-finger transcription factor Sensitive to Proton Rhizotoxicity 1 (MdSTOP1) from apple as a chilling-responsive regulator whose transcript and protein abundance increased under chilling stress. We further demonstrated that MdSTOP1 enhances apple tolerance to prolonged chilling at non-

A combined very fast chilling and tannic acid-Lycium ruthenicum anthocyanin treatment for preserving beef color through inhibition of lipid and myoglobin oxidation during aging.

Beef color is one of the most important quality attributes influencing freshness perception and consumer purchasing decisions. In this study, owing to their complementary antioxidant and natural coloring properties, tannic acid (TA, 2 mg/mL) and Lycium ruthenicum anthocyanins (LRA, 8 mg/mL) were used as coloring antioxidants in combination with very fast chilling (VFC) treatment to enhance beef color during postmortem aging. Products derived from lipid oxidation can promote the oxidative conversion of the central iron atom in myoglobin (Mb), converting Fe2+ to Fe3+ and resulting in metmyoglobi

Hydrogen Sulfide as a Green Postharvest Preservative: A Meta-Analysis of Quality Maintenance, Stress Resistance Regulation, and Implications for Artificial Intelligence‑Assisted Chilling Injury Early Warning.

Postharvest losses of fruits and vegetables represent a global concern, as they are susceptible to spoilage and deterioration. In recent years, numerous studies have explored the effects of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) treatment on the postharvest preservation of fruits and vegetables. However, due to variations in experimental materials, treatment protocols, and detection parameters, no consensus has yet been reached regarding its efficacy. This study systematically analyzed the overall effects of H2S treatment on improving the quality of various fruits and vegetables and enhancing postharvest stor

Does Lagenaria siceraria seed oil-enriched extender regulate sperm quality, oxidant/antioxidant markers, and sperm mitochondrial enzymes in chilled diluted rabbit semen?

This study investigated the cryoprotective effects of Lagenaria siceraria seed oil (BG) on rabbit sperm quality during a 72-hour period of chilled storage at 4 °C. While a prevalent method for preserving rabbit semen, cryopreservation can elicit cold shock and other stressors, resulting in a decline in sperm quality. Thereafter, the researchers hypothesized that BG, potentially due to its antioxidant properties, could mitigate these detrimental effects. For the experiment, semen samples were diluted in extender and assigned to treatment groups receiving BG at concentrations of 0 (BG0), 100 (BG

Preparation and characterization of a thymol nanoemulsion-loaded multifunctional sustained-release corn straw cellulose nanocrystal/acetylated starch-based aerogel and its application in chilled meat preservation.

Chilled meat is prone to microbial contamination during storage, resulting in a shortened shelf life. This study developed multifunctional biodegradable aerogel with water absorption, antibacterial, and sustained release properties as a preservation pad for meat, using corn straw cellulose nanocrystals (CSCNCs) and acetylated starch (AS) as the structural skeleton and thymol (TMO) nanoemulsions as antimicrobials. The effects of different mass ratios of CSCNCs/AS on the morphology, structure, physical properties, and release behavior of aerogels were systematically analyzed. Additionally, their

Research note: Stage-associated differences in hygiene indicator bacteria from pre-chlorinated water immersion chilling (CWIC) carcasses through CWIC to packaged quail products.

Commercial processing of quails has been less studied than broiler processing, despite the food safety relevance of hygienic control in poultry slaughter operations. This study characterized hygiene indicator bacteria in quail carcasses pre- and post-chlorinated water immersion chilling (CWIC), in finished packaged products, and in selected processing-environment matrices across three independent trials in a commercial facility. In each trial, whole-carcass rinse samples were collected from pre-CWIC (n = 5) and post-CWIC (n = 5) carcasses, with technical triplicate plating for each carcass. Th

Seawater-dissolved oligochitosan coating and basket-in-bag packaging extend the chilled shelf-life of slender shrimp (Metapenaeus brevicornis) during 13-day storage at 4 ± 1 °C.

Chilled shrimp deteriorate rapidly because post-mortem biochemical spoilage, oxidative deterioration and microbial growth continue during refrigeration; however, practical set-points that integrate oligochitosan (COS) coating solvent and packaging geometry remain insufficiently defined. This study aimed to establish an implementable COS-based preservation strategy for chilled slender shrimp (Metapenaeus brevicornis). Shrimp were stored at 4 ± 1 °C and evaluated in three experimental branches: (a) COS concentration screening (0.75-1.50%, w/v; 3-min dip in reverse-osmosis water), (b) solvent com

Developing methods for chilling, compacting, and sterilizing adult Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) and comparing mating competitiveness between males sterilized as adults versus pupae for sterile male release.

The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti L., can transmit several pathogens responsible for human diseases. With insecticide resistance development becoming a concern, alternative control strategies are needed for Ae. aegypti. Sterile insect technique (SIT) is an increasingly popular option being explored. However, logistical issues in mass production and sterilization make it difficult to maintain a SIT program. Male mosquitoes are typically irradiated as pupae because this is the earliest developmental point at which females can be separated from males, but asynchrony in pupation and high va

The CHILL BONES (combining high-intensity impact loading and lifting with mind-body exercise for optimisation of nervous system and skeletal health) trial: protocol for a parallel-group, semi-randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Animal studies suggest that elevated sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity can accelerate bone loss. However, this area has not been well researched in humans. High-intensity Resistance and Impact Training (HiRIT) is recognised as an effective treatment for osteoporosis and osteopenia. Alternate forms of exercise such as mind-body exercise may be used to modulate sympathetic activity, which could have an additive benefit for skeletal adaptation when used in conjunction with HiRIT. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the combination of mind-body exercise (Tai Chi)
