[Acute polyradiculoneuropathy after Chlamydia pneumoniae infection].

A 36-year-old woman presented acute polyradiculoneuropathy following Chlamydia pneumoniae infection. Although electrophysiologic studies were normal, clinical features were typical of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Anti-ganglioside GM1 antibodies were positive. Two other cases of GBS following Chlamydia pneumoniae infection have been reported, but no specific feature emerges. Outcome was good in our patient after intravenous globulin then antibiotic therapy. Our case supports the notion that Chlamydia pneumoniae infection can induce GBS. The association is probably underestimated.

Sphingomyelin trafficking in Chlamydia pneumoniae-infected cells.

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a bacterial obligate intracellular parasite with a developmental cycle common to all members of the genus Chlamydia. Like other chlamydiae, the developmental cycle of C. pneumoniae occurs entirely within a membrane-bound intracellular vacuole, termed an inclusion, that is non-fusogenic with endosomal or lysosomal compartments. To characterize the vesicular interactions of the C. pneumoniae inclusion, we used a fluorescent analogue of ceramide, (N-[7-(4-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazole)]-6-aminocaproyl-Derythro-sphingosine (C6-NBD-Cer), that has previously been used to chara

[Infection and coronary atherosclerosis: the role Chlamydia pneumonia].

The role of inflammatory reactions in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is widely accepted. Recently, an increasing body of evidence has linked infections to atherosclerosis. It is hypothesized that infections could interact with other risk factors of vascular disease, enhancing the endothelial damage and the production of atherosclerotic plaques. Several different infectious agents have been related to the atherosclerosis genesis: mainly herpesvirus, Helicobacter pylori and Chlamydia pneumoniae. Several lines of evidence strongly link C. pneumoniae to atherosclerosis. Consequently, several

Experimental infection of pregnant ewes with Chlamydia pecorum.

Pregnant ewes were infected in midpregnancy with three isolates of Chlamydia pecorum derived from the feces of healthy lambs from three different farms. Oral infection, alone or together with Fasciola hepatica, did not result in tissue invasion, since all placental and fecal samples were negative for chlamydiae. Intravenous infection resulted in placental infection in 16 of 18 ewes in that chlamydiae were cultured from placentas or vaginal swabs. Two ewes bore dead lambs after a shortened gestation time. The chlamydiae isolated were all C. pecorum. There were no significant differences between

[Bronchitis and alveolitis in the course of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection].

A case of a 38-year old male with respiratory failure in the course of infection by Chlamydia pneumoniae has been described. Inflammation of bronchioles and alveoli was diagnosed on the basis of clinical examination and analysis of cellular components of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). The diagnosis was confirmed by bacteriological examination of the culture infected by the material collected from the patient. Therapy with doxycycline was instituted which resulted in remission of symptoms. The case described confirms the findings of other authors that infection by Chlamydia pneumoniae may

[Study on the perinatal infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis].

OBJECTIVE: Study on the frequency and outcome of chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection of the pregnant women and their babies. METHODS: Two hundred and seventy eight pregnant women and their 79 infants were studied with McCoy cell culture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequence analysis. Isolation of CT was performed in McCoy cell culture, and iodine-stained glycogen-positive inclusions were considered to be positive. CT DNAs were extracted by modified NaI method. Two sets of primers derived from CT common plasmid and major outer membrane protein genes were used in the PCR. Dideoxy-m

General practice update: chlamydia infection in women.

The prevalence of cervical Chlamydia trachomatis infection in general practice populations ranges between 2% and 12%. Untreated infection can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal infertility and ectopic pregnancy. These risks are increased by cervical invasive procedures, especially termination of pregnancy. However, most women with chlamydia infection have no symptoms. General practitioners and practice nurses carrying out pelvic examinations should have facilities for taking endocervical specimens for chlamydia. Routine chlamydia screening, should be considered if the local prevalence of

The relationship of Chlamydia trachomatis infection and male infertility.

OBJECTIVES: Infertility affects at least 2 million couples in the United States. One third of infertility is attributed to male causes, but the etiology of most male infertility remains obscure. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between Chlamydia trachomatis and unexplained infertility in men. METHODS: Questionnaires and serum were collected prospectively from 52 case subjects (men from couples with explicitly defined idiopathic infertility) and 79 control subjects (first-time expectant fathers). RESULTS: Case subjects were significantly more likely than control subject

[Endometrial Chlamydia infection in women with habitual abortion].

Endometrial, endocervical, and urethral specimens were obtained from 16 nonpregnant women with a history of habitual abortions. Chlamydia were isolated from the endometria of 4 women, but only in one case chlamydial intracytoplasmic incorporations in endometrial cells were detectable by the Romanovsky Giemza staining. Endometrial Chlamydia infection was diagnosed in 5 of the 16 patients. No Chlamydia were isolated from the cervix uteri or urethra of 2 patients with endometrial involvement. The study has demonstrated that eradication of intrauterine chlamydial infection before pregnancy improve

[Coxiella burnetii and Chlamydia psittaci infection in dogs].

The prevalence of Coxiella burnetii and Chlamydia psittaci antibodies was investigated in 530 dog specimens divided into six groups, i. e. A = private watch dogs, B1 = service dogs from Bratislava, B2 = service dogs from other localities of Slovakia and Moravia, C = watch dogs from farms, I = household dogs, T = stray dogs. The dogs demonstrated the higher seropositivity to C. burnetii (11.7%) than to Ch. psittaci (5.5%). The highest percentage of antibodies to C. burnetii was found in stray dogs (23.7%), less prevalence of antibodies was observed in the animals in group C (13.6%), almost the

Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in pregnant patients.

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease of epidemic proportions, infecting an estimated 4 million people a year. It results not only in infertility and ectopic pregnancy but also in infant morbidity and mortality. Ectopic pregnancy is responsible for 11 percent of maternal deaths. About 60 percent of infected women can transmit the bacteria at birth to their infants. Early detection and treatment of chlamydia in both men and women, especially prenatal women, is critical. Chlamydia trachomatis infection of the cervix was found in 8.1 percent of a group of 1,004 pregnant women at a hospital

Immunocytochemical demonstration of Chlamydia infection in the urogenital tracts.

The peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique was applied in cellular samples for the detection of chlamydial infection. Urethral scrapings were obtained from 316 males with clinically suspected urethritis. Positive PAP staining was detected in 118 (37%) of 316 tested. Cellular samples from the endocervix of 25 (54%) of 46 female contacts of males with positive Chlamydia-infected cells had positive Chlamydia-PAP staining. Chlamydia was also found in 12 (25%) of 48 male with gonorrhea. Serum IgG antibodies against Chlamydia trachomatis were evaluated using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Evidence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in gynaecological patients.

Direct microscopic examination of cervical smears taken from gynaecological patients and stained by Giemsa and Gimenez revealed the presence of chlamydial inclusions in 2 and elementary bodies in 6 out of 40 samples tested. Attempts of demonstration of chlamydiae from cervical smears of further patients in chick embryo yolk sacs and cycloheximide-treated McCoy cells using the centrifugation of infectious inocula succeeded in 4 and 9 cases of 71 patients examined, respectively. One isolated strain behaved as Chlamydia trachomatis based on its sensitivity to sulfadiazine, absence of killing the

[Chlamydia trachomatis infection in a patient with condylomata acuminata].

Chlamydia trachomatis cervical infection was observed in a 19-year-old woman with genital condylomata acuminata. To isolate C.trachomatis, cycloheximide-treated McCoy cells and a culture-independent monoclonal antibody were used. In addition, a single-antigen immunofluorescence test was made to determine the chlamydia antibody titer. Condylomata acuminata are induced by human papillomaviruses (HPV), predominantly types 6 and 11. This case shows that simultaneous genital infection of C.trachomatis and HPV requires special attention.
