Regression pattern of amplitude of electrocardiographic waves during intravenous infusion in intact, buffer nerve denervated and spinal dogs.

Electrocardiographic (ECG) amplitude changes during clinically feasible rate of infusion of normal saline (NS), Ringer-Locke (RL) solution and tender coconut water (TCW) upto a dose of 100 ml/kg in paraldehyde (PLD) and chloralose and urethane (C&U) anaesthetised dogs were studied. The infusion caused a net decrease in P and QRS amplitudes but had varied effect on T wave amplitude in intact PLD and C&U anaesthetised dogs. Infusion of RL in vagotomised and/or carotid sinus (CS) denervated dogs and in spinal dogs indicated that these neural pathways had a significant effect on basal amplitude of

Effects of hyperventilation, CO2, and CSF pressure on internal carotid blood flow in the baboon.

The combined effect upon cerebral blood flow (CBF) of an elevation of cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP) and changes in respiratory CO2 was studied in nine baboons under chloralose anesthesia. The animals were mildly hyperventilated and provided with increasing amounts of CO2 in O2-air. Arterial CO2 tensions (PaCO2) increased from 17 to 58 mm Hg. Internal carotid blood flow (ICBF) was measured at normal CSFP and at hydrostatically maintained 50 mm Hg CSFP. It was found that: 1) end-tidal CO2 may be used as a substitute for arterial PaCO2 determinations; 2) this elevation of CSFP has little ef

Stimulation of chemosensitive afferents from multifidus muscle does not sensitize multifidus muscle spindles to vertebral loads in the lumbar spine of the cat.

STUDY DESIGN: Electrophysiologic recordings from muscle spindle afferents innervating the lumbar multifidus muscle of the cat while loading the L6 vertebra at its spinous process and while exposing the segmentally adjacent lumbar multifidus muscles to algesic and inflammatory mediators. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate a possible mechanism underlying muscle spasm and pain in the lumbar spine. The hypothesis was tested that stimulation of chemosensitive afferents with receptive endings in the paraspinal muscle increases the discharge of paraspinal muscle spindle afferen

Hypothermia induced by inhibition of fatty acid metabolism in anesthetized rats: contributions of the forebrain and vagal afferents.

2-Mercaptoacetate (MA) is an antimetabolic drug that inhibits the utilization of fatty acids as an energy source. The intravenous injection of MA (1.2 mmol·kg-1) elicited an increase in tail skin temperature and a decrease in body core temperature in urethane-chloralose-anesthetized, neuromuscularly blocked, artificially ventilated rats, although administration of the same amount of NaCl did not. The respiratory exchange ratio was significantly higher after administration of MA than that after the saline treatment. On the other hand, heat production was increased by either the MA- or NaCl-inje

Modulation of two types of jaw-opening reflex by stimulation of the red nucleus.

The red nucleus (RN) is divided cytoarchitecturally into two parts, the parvicellular part (RPC) and the magnocellular part (RMC). The present study aims, first, to compare the effects of RN stimulation between low- and high-threshold afferents-evoked jaw opening reflexes (JORs), and secondly to compare the size of these effects in the RPC and RMC. Experiments were performed on rats anesthetized with urethane-chloralose. The JOR was evoked by electrical stimulation of the inferior alveolar nerve and was recorded as the electromyographic response of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle. T

A canine model of sustained atrial fibrillation induced by rapid atrial pacing and phenylephrine.

Atrial fibrillation is a common arrhythmia with considerable morbidity and mortality. Limitations in studying both the mechanisms and therapy of atrial fibrillation arise due to the paucity of models that yield sufficiently high-quality data, are not costly, and in which atrial fibrillation is sustained long enough to make the necessary observations. The canine model we present is based on the hypothesis that atrial fibrillation requires heterogeneity of repolarization, that distribution of vagal fibers is heterogeneous in the atria, and that atrial fibrillation will persist after reflex stimu

Effect of electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves on neuropathic pain.

STUDY DESIGN: Changes in the electrophysiologic response of spinal dorsal horn neurons elicited by peripheral electrical stimulation were examined. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves causes an inhibition of pain at the spinal cord level. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The wide dynamic range neurons studied were known to be excited by primary afferent fibers, not only combined A (delta) and C nociceptive fibers, but also low-threshold mechanoreceptive A (beta) fibers and A (delta) fibers of down hairs. The wide dynamic range neurons are classified a

The inhibitory effect of substance P on gastric motor function in the nucleus raphe obscurus is mediated via nitric oxide in the dorsal vagal complex.

We have previously shown that substance P (SP), microinjected into the caudal nucleus raphe obscurus (nROb) of the rat decreases intragastric pressure via a vagally mediated pathway. Recent studies from this laboratory demonstrated that nitric oxide (NO) synthase is present in the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) and NO synthase blockade in the DVC of the rat with NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) evokes increases in intragastric pressure. Since the nROb controls gastric vagal outflow through the DVC, we tested the hypothesis that NO in the DVC is a mediator of inhibitory effects of SP on ga

Stimulus interaction between CO2 and almitrine in the cat carotid chemoreceptors.

The hypothesis that augmentation of the carotid chemoreceptor response to hypoxia by almitrine is due in part to an increased response to CO2 was tested by using single or few fiber preparation of carotid body chemosensory fibers in 12 cats anesthetized with alpha-chloralose. To differentiate between the plausible mechanisms of effects, we also tested the responsiveness of the afferents to cyanide and nicotine before and after almitrine. After a saturation dose of almitrine (1 mg.kg-1 followed by 0.5 mg.kg-1.h-1) the chemosensory responses to CO2 strikingly increased even during hyperoxia: the

Inhibition of baroreflex following microinjection of GABA or morphine into the nucleus tractus solitarii in rabbits.

The possibility that putative transmitters may influence the aortic nerve stimulation-produced bradycardia and depressor responses was examined in urethane- and chloralose-anesthetized, paralyzed and artificially ventilated rabbits. The ipsilateral microinjection of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA, 2-4 micrograms) or morphine hydrochloride (2-4 micrograms) into the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) area could partially block the evoked bradycardia and depressor responses produced by stimulation of the aortic nerve without influencing the basal blood pressure and heart rate. This blocking effect of

Single-unit and multiunit analyses of renorenal reflexes elicited by stimulation of renal chemoreceptors in the rat.

Stimulation of renal chemoreceptors, induced by backflow of concentrated urine into the renal pelvis, elicited a reflex increase in the rate of multiunit efferent renal nerve activity in rats. Ipsilateral stimulation increased the rate by 17.1 +/- 4.5%; contralateral stimulation increased the rate by 20.8 +/- 4.5%. Efferent activity returned toward control levels within the first minute following removal of the stimulus. The reflex responses were quantitatively similar in rats anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital or alpha-chloralose, but increased following complete transection of the spinal

Response of large hindlimb veins of dog to aortic arch chemoreceptor stimulation.

Experiments were performed in chloralose-anesthetized dogs to examine the reflex effects on tone in the saphenous vein of stimulating the aortic arch chemoreceptors. The saphenous vein was perfused with cooled (30 degrees C) aortic blood at constant flow, and perfusion pressure was measured. In 13 animals the aortic arch chemoreceptors were stimulated by injection of cyanide (0.1 mg/kg) into the root of the aorta. Cyanide caused a decrease (20 +/- 2 mmHg) in saphenous vein perfusion pressure and an increase (44 +/- 4) in aortic pressure. These changes that occurred subsequent to aortic root cy

The vagal control of the feline pyloric sphincter.

In acute experiments on cats in chloralose anesthesia the effects of efferent and afferent electrical stimulation of the cervical vagi on an applied constant flow of saline through the feline pylorus was studied. The motor activity of the stomach was recorded simultaneously with a volume recording technique. Efferent cervical vagal stimulation caused a decrease in the transpyloric flow and an increased gastric motor activity. In a few animals the decreased transsphincteric flow was preceded by a short period of increased flow. When the transpyloric flow was reduced by splanchnic nerve stimulat

Suppresion of autonomic postganglionic discharges by pentobarbital in dogs, with or without endotoxemia.

Initial effects of pentobarbital (8 mg/kg) on autonomic efferent and afferent discharge rates were studied in 26 dogs under morphine-chloralose anesthesia. Half of the dogs were given endotoxin E. coli (1 mg/kg) before pentobarbital. The postganglionic cervical vagal efferentation of all the dogs decreased as did the postganglionic cardiac sympathetic efferentation. The heart rate of the dogs given endotoxin decreased, while an increase in heart rate with abolition of respiratory arrhythmia, was observed in dogs without endotoxin. The aortic pressure of the former dogs dropped while it fell on

Neural control of salivary myoepithelial cells.

1. The pressures in the ducts of the submaxillary, parotid and sublingual glands were recorded in cats under chloralose anaesthesia. A single stimulus applied to the parasympathetic glandular nerve caused a pressure rise, the size of which increased with the initial pressure. This response was abolished by a small dose of atropine.2. The effect was not due to salivary secretion, since the single stimulus caused salivation only exceptionally. Repetitive stimulation at frequencies too low to evoke secretion could produce summated pressure responses.3. The single stimulus applied to the chorda ty

Responsiveness of neurones in the hippocampal region of anaesthetised and unanaesthetised cats to stimulation of sensory pathways.

The responses to sensory stimuli and to shocks to the optic pathways have been studied for 399 units in the hippocampal region of 19 cats. 172 units were recorded from anaesthetised cats and 229 from 7 unanaesthetised cats. In the unanaesthetised animals the proportions of units responding were high (60%) and did not differ significantly between regions for each type of stimulation investigated: visual, auditory and optic chiasma shocks. The proportion of units responsive to chiasmatic stimulation was related to the background firing rate. The latencies and duration of the responses were relat

Effects of pulse lung inflation on chest wall expiratory motor activity.

The effects of pulse lung inflation (LI) on expiratory muscle activity and phase duration (Te) were determined in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing dogs (n = 20). A volume syringe was used to inflate the lungs at various times during the expiratory phase. The magnitude of lung volume was assessed by the corresponding change in airway pressure (Paw; range 2-20 cmH(2)O). Electromyographic (EMG) activities were recorded from both thoracic and abdominal muscles. Parasternal muscle EMG was used to record inspiratory activity. Expiratory activity was assessed from the triangularis sterni (TS), i

Energy metabolism in the rat cortex under thiopental anaesthesia measured In Vivo by 13 C MRS.

Barbiturates, commonly used as general anaesthetics, depress neuronal activity and thus cerebral metabolism. Moreover, they are likely to disrupt the metabolic support of astrocytes to neurons, as well as the uptake of nutrients from circulation. By employing 13 C magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in vivo at high magnetic field, we characterized neuronal and astrocytic pathways of energy metabolism in the rat cortex under thiopental anaesthesia. The neuronal tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle rate was 0.46 ± 0.02 µmol/g/min, and the rate of the glutamate-glutamine cycle was 0.09 ± 0.02 µmol/g/
