BACKGROUND: Extra-fine particle formulations of hydrofluoroalkane-134a beclometasone dipropionate (HFA-BDP) exhibit clinical effects comparable with conventional particle formulations of chlorofluorocarbon beclometasone dipropionate (CFC-BDP) at half the dose. Freon 113 is not usually considered a toxic chemical and is not generally included in toxicology text lists of dangerous chemicals. However, during one 7-year period, the U.S. Navy recorded 38 freon-related mishaps, including 16 chemical burns and 22 inhalation injuries. Several deaths were also recorded. The histologic alterations induced by spray refrigerants independent of and in combination with dermabrasion were studied with the use of the domestic pig as a model. Tissue injury was found to be a function of spray duration and freeze intensity. Both preabrasion freezing and postabrasion refreezing could produce damage additive to that of mechanical planing. Skin surface and intradermal temperature variations during refrigeration were recorded. The possible implications of these findings as they pertain to clinical dermabrasion are discussed.

Fluorocarbon 113 was applied to the backs of male hairless mice for 10 days, 20 days and 40 days. After each exposure period, the mice were anesthetized and the liver biopsied. The tissue was prepared for light and electron microscopy. The resultant micrographs were stereologically analyzed. N differences in mitochondrial structure were observed between the controls and the animals exposed for 10 days and 40 days. Hydrochlorofluorocarbon 123 (HCFC 123) is one of the chemicals being considered as a replacement for the chlorofluorocarbons. Four subchronic inhalation toxicity studies from 1 to 3 months in duration have been conducted with HCFC 123. One study utilized rats and dogs, while the others were limited to rats only. The exposure levels have ranged from 300 ppm up to 20,000 ppm. Although the studies were conducted over a 14-year period, the results were consistent. Gas-water partition coefficients, K(w), and gas-solvent partition coefficients, K(s), have been determined for chlorodifluoromethane and for 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane by headspace analysis, using a very simple experimental procedure.
