Giant Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle and temporomandibular joint - A case report.

Osteochondroma is one of the common bone tumours but is rarely seen in the head and neck region. Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle, extending to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is an infrequent occurrence. Patients commonly present with restricted mouth opening and malocclusion. Due to the significant overlap in features between chondromas and condylar hyperplasia, it is very likely to be misdiagnosed, resulting in treatment errors. In this report, an interesting case of a large osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle extending into the zygomatic and petrous part of the temporal bone

Clinical and Imaging Features of Tumors in the Scapula.

BACKGROUND: The scapula is a small irregular-shaped flat bone, which may suffer from a variety of tumors or tumor-like lesions. As the imaging manifestations are complex and changeable, correct imaging diagnosis is difficult. INTRODUCTION: At present, there are few related radiology literatures, and it is necessary to fully analyze the imaging signs of different types of benign and malignant tumors in scapula to guide clinical treatment. This study was to investigate clinical and imaging presentations of tumors and tumor- like lesions in the scapula so as to increase the diagnostic accuracy o

Carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder with chondroid differentiation.

Carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder is an uncommon neoplasm. We herein report the case of a patient with carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder with chondroid differentiation, treated by cholecystectomy with liver segmentectomy and lymph node dissection for a tumor which occupied the entire gallbladder and spread to the liver. Histologically, the tumor contained two distinct components: a mixture of both well and poorly differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma and sarcomatoid tissue with chondroid differentiation. From a review of the literature, it was seen that carcinosarcomas of the gallbladder could

Osteochondromatosis of the hip joint. Report of a cast.

Osteochondrmatosis of the hip is a rare disease in which segments of synovial membrane become cartilaginous. These may calcify or ossify forming osteocartilaginous masses as loose bodies. It occurs most often in young or middle-aged adults and the etiology of the condition is unknown. The diagnosis can be apparent with due consideration on clinical history and proper X-ray examination of the joint. One case of such disease with typical X-ray findings is reported.

Laryngeal Chondrosarcoma of the Thyroid Cartilage.

Laryngeal chondrosarcoma is rare and accounts for 0.2% of all larynx malignancies. Although chondrosarcoma is the most common sarcoma seen in the larynx, laryngeal involvement by cartilage tumors is rare. In this article, we aimed to present the differential diagnosis of chondrosarcoma located in the thyroid cartilage, which is a rare site, in a 75-year-old male patient. The patient underwent total laryngectomy by the otolaryngology department. The macroscopy of the laryngectomy material sent to the pathology laboratory revealed a 3x2 cm tumor with a polypoid extension to the lumen from the bo

An unusual case of mediastinal mass and bilateral nodules.

A 23-year-old woman presented with a mediastinal paraganglioma and multiple pulmonary chondromas following antral gastric resection for gastrointestinal stromal tumor. These tumors form the Carney triad, a rare disorder of unknown genetic background. First described in 1977, approximately 120 cases have been documented in the literature. The tumors do not harbor the specific c-kit or PDGFRA gene mutations often found in sporadic gastrointestinal stromal tumor. In most cases, gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor is the first tumor to be detected, with secondary tumors appearing years later. E

Calcifying (juvenile) aponeurotic fibroma of the scalp.

Calcifying aponeurotic fibroma is a benign tumor with a predilection for distal parts of the extremities; it is very rare in the head and neck region. It commonly affects young patients-hence the term juvenile in the name. It is fibroblastic in origin and considered a cartilage analogue of fibromatosis, but its exact etiology remains unknown. Clinically, this tumor needs to be differentiated from fibromatosis, nodular fasciitis, chondroma, schwannoma, and rheumatoid nodule. A 24-year-old woman presented with swelling in the forehead for the previous 6 months. Wide surgical excision of the lesi

Rhinolithiasis with a nasal polyp: a case report.

Rhinoliths are uncommon mineralized masses that form as a result of calcification of an endogenous or exogenous nidus. The most common manifestations of rhinolithiasis are unilateral nasal discharge, nasal obstruction, and facial pain. The diagnosis is made by nasal endoscopy and computed tomography. The differential diagnosis includes chronic inflammation, osteomyelitis, benign tumors (e.g., calcified nasal polyps, ossifying fibromas, osteomas, and chondromas), and malignant tumors (e.g., osteosarcomas, chondrosarcomas, and squamous cell carcinomas). Rhinoliths may cause rhinosinusitis, erosi

Symptomatic laryngeal nodular chondrometaplasia: a clinicopathological study.

A 41 year old man with a history of politrauma presented with a nodular mass of the left false vocal cord, associated with progressive dysphonia, dyspnoea, and dysphagia. A computed tomography scan of the neck region showed a rounded and circumscribed mass without infiltration of the surrounding tissues. Histological investigation of the nodule revealed the presence of fibroelastic cartilaginous tissue, surrounded by a thin rim of fibrous tissue, with rare hypercellular areas, occasional binucleated cells, slight hyperchromasia, and an irregular nuclear profile. Mitotic activity was absent. Th

Spontaneous neoplasms in captive African cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus Temminck, 1827).

Despite the increasing importance of cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus) farming in Africa, diseases of these animals in captivity are not well known. A survey of a colony in Gabon averaging 235 cane rats over a period of 36 months allowed the observation of several suspected tumors and the confirmation of three cases of neoplasms. Within a period of 8 months, a chondroma in an adult female, a hemangiosarcoma in a subadult male, and a chondrosarcoma in an elderly female were diagnosed. This incidence (1.3%) of neoplasms in the cane rat colony in such a short period is uncommon. Neoplasms in rod

Neoplastic pathology of oncogenic osteomalacia/rickets.

Reported are two cases of oncogenic osteomalacia, each caused by a small mesenchymal tumor, with detailed assessment of the tumors by light microscopy, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry. One tumor was a primitive mesenchymal tumor with prominent giant cell and vascular components, and the second resembled the giant cell variant of soft parts chondroma. Osteoclast-like, multinucleated giant cells and vascularity were prominent features in both tumors. Although the literature documents a histologically heterogeneous group of tumors as causing this syndrome, most have multinucleated g

Extra-articular tenosynovial chondromatosis of the right fifth digit in a 59-year-old man: A case report and literature review.

Tenosynovial chondromatosis is a rare benign disorder characterized by formation of cartilaginous bodies within the synovia of the tendon sheaths. Most commonly present in the hands and feet. Clinical presentation and plain radiography can be inconclusive, which can lead to misclassification, most often confused as a chondroma of soft parts. In this case, we report the clinical, radiologic, and histology of a 59-year-old man who presented with a 1-year history of mass on the right fifth digit with limitation of motion secondary to this condition. Surgical excision revealed multiple cartilagino

Mesenchymal hamartoma of the chest wall: a cooperative study with review of the literature.

The clinicopathologic features of three examples of mesenchymal hamartoma of the chest wall are described. The entity has been recorded under a number of names including osteochondroma, osteochondrosarcoma, benign chondroblastoma, mesenchymoma, and chondromatous hamartoma. The condition is manifest at birth or shortly thereafter with deformity of the chest wall and respiratory distress. Radiographic examination reveals a well-defined, partly calcified mass involving one or more ribs. The tumor is composed predominantly of chondroid tissue with large endothelium-lined blood spaces and immature

Primary sternal tumours.

Nine cases of primary sternal tumour were retrospectively reviewed in regard to clinical, radiologic and surgical features. The tumours were chondrosarcoma (4), chondroma (3), solitary plasmacytoma (1) and osteochondroma (1). All the benign lesions were excised without complication or recurrence. Three chondrosarcomas were radically excised en bloc, and one was only locally excised because of gross involvement of underlying structures. The solitary plasmacytoma was treated with incisional biopsy and radiotherapy. Two of the three patients with radical excision of sternal chondrosarcoma were al

Current management of hand enchondroma: a review.

Enchondromas are benign bone tumours originating from cartilages. It is mainly discovered incidentally in radiographs or due to symptoms like pathological fracture or pain. Conservative treatment through regular check-up and surgical excision using curettage are the two major treatment methods for enchondromas. This review concludes that small localized asymptomatic lesions can be treated conservatively while most expanding or symptomatic lesions should be treated with simple curettage. Adjuvant treatments like high-speed burring or alcohol instillation are not recommended.

[Benign cartilage tumors. What should I do with incidental findings?].

BACKGROUND: The majority of benign bone tumors are cartilage tumors. Most common are enchondroma and osteochondroma. Often they represent incidental findings in radiological diagnostics. Thus, the incidence of cartilage tumors is unknown, as most of them are never diagnosed due to the absence of any symptoms. OBJECTIVES: This article describes the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of benign cartilage tumors, focusing on incidental findings. METHODS: The current knowledge and our own experience in the diagnostics and treatment of benign condroid tumors are presented. RESULTS: As enchondrom

Synovial neoformations and tumours.

An important group of soft tissue tumours and tumour-like lesions originates from the synovium of the joints, bursae and tendon sheaths. These include synovial chondromatosis, diffuse articular lipomatosis (lipoma arborescens), villonodular synovitis, synovial haemangioma, synovial chondroma and fibroma (intracapsular and peri-articular), primary chondrosarcoma originating from the synovium and synovial sarcoma. The main clinical symptoms of these tumours, such as pain, swelling, effusion and joint locking, are not specific, so the diagnosis can easily be missed in clinical practice. The most
