Paediatric choroid plexus carcinoma: a retrospective case series from Karachi.

The objective of this study is to report clinical, radiological, and histopathological characteristics of three paediatric patients diagnosed as Choroid plexus carcinoma seen at our hospital, between 2015 and 2020. Three patients were diagnosed with choroid plexus carcinomas between 2015 and 2018. The mean age at diagnosis was 1.3 years (range 8 months to 1.5 years). All the three patients had subtotal resection and received adjuvant chemotherapy. One patient also received adjuvant radiotherapy. Despite these treatment measures, residual disease was noted in all three patients and two patients

Pathological and immunohistochemical studies of choroid plexus carcinoma of the dog.

Choroid plexus carcinomas in four dogs (three male, one female) aged small middle 2.5 to 10 years, were examined by light microscopy and immunohistochemistry. The dogs showed progressive neurological signs including ataxia, seizures, vestibular disease and cranial nerve deficits, lasting for several months in some cases. Primary tumours were localized in the lateral (one case), third (one case), and fourth (two cases) ventricles. Hydrocephalus was evident at post-mortem examination in one case. In two cases the neoplastic cells closely resembled the structure of normal choroid plexus, with a d

Recent Advances in Photodynamic Therapy for Vascular Abnormalities.

Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive therapy that was gradually established as a first-line treatment for vascular abnormalities. Its action depends on the appropriate wavelength of light and photosensitizer to produce toxic oxygen species and cause cell death. Objective: Several new clinical improvements and trends in PDT have been described in recent years. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the current data from clinical trials. Methods: In this review, we introduce and generalize the wavelength, duration, dose, strength, and photosensitizer of PDT

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) was originally approved for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and secondary choroidal neovascularization in myopia (mCNV). In addition, it is used as an off-label treatment in patients with choroidal hemangioma, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). OBJECTIVE: To track the development of PDT treatment numbers in Germany between 2006 and 2021 and to investigate the composition of the therapeutic indications. METHODS: In this retrospective study the quality reports of German

PIGMENTATION IN FOCAL SCLERAL NODULE.

PURPOSE: To report a case of pigmentation in focal scleral nodule (FSN). METHODS: This is a single case report. RESULT: An asymptomatic 61-year-old woman was referred with small, partially pigmented raised lesion located at the superior margin of the optic nerve head. The lesion's clinical and multimodal imaging features were consistent for FSN including a dome-shaped elevation confined to the sclera with overlying choroidal thinning. However, the pigmentation within our lesion is a novel finding in FSN that has not been described before. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, we report the first ca

New insights on circumscribed choroidal hemangioma: "bench to bedside".

Circumscribed choroidal hemangioma is a rare vascular hamartoma of the choroid, presenting as a red-orange mass at the posterior pole on fundoscopic examination. Despite its benign origin, associated complications such as subretinal fluid, serous retinal detachment, retinoschisis and neovascular glaucoma may lead to serious visual impairment in more than half patients. Because of its similarity to amelanotic choroidal melanoma and choroidal metastasis, differential diagnosis is still challenging for specialists. Multimodal imaging such as ultrasonography, fluorescein angiography, indocyanine g

The Small Choroidal Melanoma: Diagnosis, Treatment Outcomes, and Unending Controversy.

PURPOSE: Small choroidal melanoma (SCM) remains a diagnostic challenge due to its clinical overlap with choroidal nevus. This overlap encompasses a wide clinical phenotype of lesions termed indeterminate choroidal lesions. Treating an indeterminate lesion is weighed against significant visual morbidity from local treatment versus increased metastatic risk with tumor size. METHODS: This comprehensive review includes diagnosis, controversies, management, and future therapy options for small choroidal melanoma. RESULTS: For diagnostically challenging cases, indeterminate choroidal lesions can b

Choroidal Neovascular Membranes in Retinal and Choroidal Tumors: Origins, Mechanisms, and Effects.

Choroidal neovascularizations are historically associated with exudative macular degeneration, nonetheless, they have been observed in nevus, melanoma, osteoma, and hemangioma involving the choroid and retina. This review aimed to elucidate the possible origins of neovascular membranes by examining in vivo and in vitro models compared to real clinical cases. Among the several potential mechanisms examined, particular attention was paid to histologic alterations and molecular cascades. Physical or biochemical resistance to vascular invasion from the choroid offered by Bruch's membrane, the role

Hyperpigmented spots at fundus examination: a new ocular sign in Neurofibromatosis Type I.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis Type I (NF1), also termed von Recklinghausen disease, is a rare genetic disorder that is transmitted by autosomal dominant inheritance, with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. It is caused by mutation in the NF1 gene on chromosome 17 encoding for neurofibromin, a protein with oncosuppressive activity, and it is 50% sporadic or inherited. The disease is characterized by a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, mainly involving the nervous system, the eye and skin, and a predisposition to develop multiple benign and malignant neoplasms. Ocular diagno

Imaging of orbital disorders.

Diseases of the orbit can be categorized in many ways, but in this chapter we shall group them according to etiology. Inflammatory diseases of the orbits may be infectious or noninfectious. Of the infections, orbital cellulitis is the most common and typically arises as a complication of acute sinusitis. Of the noninfectious, inflammatory conditions, thyroid orbitopathy is the most common and results in enlargement of the extraocular muscles and proliferation of the orbital fat. Idiopathic orbital inflammatory syndrome is another cause of inflammation in the orbit, which may mimic thyroid orbi

Evaluation of PAX8 Expression in Brain Tissue and Related Neoplasms.

Undifferentiated brain tumors represent a diagnostic challenge, particularly in small biopsies, with regards to their primary versus metastatic origin. The latter may show overlapping morphologic features with primary high-grade brain tumors. In recent years several new antibodies have entered the realm of daily pathology practice. PAX8 (mammalian paired box genes 1 to 9 protein encoding gene) is among these new markers and is recognized as a differentiating marker of the primary site in epithelial tumors outside of the central nervous system. A review of the literature shows lack of site-spec

Prognostic Implication of DNA Methylation Signature in Atypical Choroid Plexus Papilloma With Intracranial Dissemination.

An underestimation of pathologic diagnosis could be expected if disseminated choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) are diagnosed as lower grade tumors. Thus, molecular diagnosis using genome-wide DNA methylation profiling may be useful for clarifying the malignant potential of the tumor entity. Herein, we report a 2.7-year-old girl of pathologically atypical choroid plexus papilloma with intracranial dissemination. She was treated without radiotherapy and has been well, without recurrence for 32 months following the diagnosis. Subsequently, after a year from the diagnosis, T-stochastic neighbor embeddi
