OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to prospectively evaluate the risk of chromosomal abnormalities associated with isolated choroid plexus cyst(s) in gravid women undergoing second-trimester ultrasonographic examination.
STUDY DESIGN: During a 24-month period 9100 pregnant women underwent midtrimester ultrasonographic evaluation. Women with a fetal diagnosis of choroid plexus cyst(s) were offered amniocentesis and a repeat examination in 4 to 6 weeks.

We evaluated the postmortem incidence of choroid plexus infection in cerebral toxoplasmosis in 17 patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and cerebral toxoplasmosis and, by immunohistochemistry, identified Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites in this structure in 53% of all cases. We present a morphological and immunohistochemical study on three papillomas and one carcinoma of the choroid plexus. Clinical characteristics are analysed. Morphological criteria for malignancy are: solid histological pattern, cellular polymorphism, nuclear atypia and infiltration of nervous tissue. The immunohistochemical study shows the value of GFAP, S-100 protein, HNK-1 and Vimentin as specific markers. In the discussion we point out the differential diagnosis between these types of tumors and the metastasis from papillary carcinomas and ependymomas.

Choroid plexus neoplasms are rare epithelial tumors of the central nervous system. A carcinoma of the choroid plexus occurred in a child from a family with the breast cancer-sarcoma syndrome (Li-Fraumeni or SBLA syndrome), an inherited condition characterized by the development of diverse neoplasms (sarcoma, breast cancer, brain tumors, leukemia, adrenal cortical carcinoma, and others). A prospective study was undertaken to evaluate the prevalence and significance of fetal choroid plexus cysts detected on screening ultrasound (US) scans. One hundred cases of fetal choroid plexus cysts were detected from 11,700 examinations: There were 95 healthy newborns, three newborns with trisomy 18, one newborn with syndactyly of the toes, and one intrauterine death. Eleven benign and five malignant choroid plexus papillomas in children and adults were studied immunohistologically with a panel of antibodies against glial fibrillary acidic protein, S-100 protein, vimentin, desmin, epithelial membrane antigen and two different cytokeratins (LP34 and CAM 5.2). Twenty-six ependymal and 15 choroid plexus tumors were examined with monoclonal antibody against cytokeratin using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) technique. Serial sections were examined with antisera to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). A case of supratentorial intracerebral cyst, containing ectopic plexus, is discussed. The cyst had no communication with the ventricular system or subarachnoid space. The cyst wall was lined in part by flattened or cuboidal epithelium and in part by glia. Fronds of choroid plexus protruded into the cavity of the cyst in one part. The preoperative and postoperative computerized tomography scans are presented and the operative findings are discussed. The management of such cases is reviewed.

A very rare case of the choroid plexus carcinoma of the left lateral ventricle with metastasis to bone was reported. A two-month-old baby was suffering from irritability and vomiting.
