A 60-year-old woman with endometrioid adenocarcinoma (stage FIGO II) presented with left eye pain. A hysterectomy was to be preceded by pelvic radiation therapy (45 Gy). Ophthalmic examination with high frequency ultrasonography revealed a ciliary body tumor with iris extension. Positron emission tomography and computed tomography fusion revealed multifocal metastatic disease. The ultrasound biomicroscope (UBM) has a major role in detecting and following different types of intra-ocular masses in the anterior part of the eye. This equipment may provide the possibility to detect the inner structure of the masses, to differentiate between cysts and solid tumours, and to follow their progression and spreading into the surrounding tissue. Uveal melanomas are rare in the black population. We report the case of an 81-year-old black man who presented a ciliary body melanoma of the left eye. Ophthalmological examination revealed a mass arising from the ciliary body and choroid. Diagnosis of ciliary body melanoma, made from clinical examination and ocular ultrasound, may be difficult in some cases due to its similarity to other eye tumors. Uveal melanomas mainly affect Caucasians but they are not unknown in blacks.

A 19-yr-old woman with a previous history of a mass of the right ciliary body presented with a decreased visual acuity of right eye. Clinicoradiologic examinations suggested a recurrent mass of the ciliary body. Enucleation of the right eye was performed under the impression of malignant tumor. PURPOSE: To present our preliminary results of trans-scleral resection of ciliary body and choroidal melanoma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 16 patients aged 20-73 years (mean 56 years) were treated from February 1999 to March 2000. There were 10 patients with ciliary body tumors, 2 with choroidal tumors and in 4 patients the tumor involved ciliary body and choroid. The mean basal diameter of tumors was 9.4 mm and the mean thickness was 7.2 mm. Trans-scleral resection was performed in all cases. Adjunctive radiotherapy using 106Ru plaques was applied in 7 cases.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The laser endoscopy system has been modified to permit high resolution intraoperative fluorescein angiograms. Because the ciliary processes can be directly viewed and photocoagulated from a limbal wound in the phakic, aphakic, or pseudophakic eye in virtually any patient, the novel opportunity to angiographically study the ciliary processes before and after various forms of ablation was created.

A girl aged 20 years was suffering from a slowly growing tumor of the ciliary body of her left eye. The tumor was excised with iridocyclectomy supposed to be a melanoma. The histologic examination showed a well-differentiated follicular carcinoma of the thyroid gland. The primary tumor had been excised 16 years before, the diagnosis at that time was benign thyroid adenoma. After the successful removal of the ciliary body a follicular carcinoma of the thyroid gland was finally diagnosed and treated by total thyroidectomy and systemic 131I therapy.

The accumulation and efflux of [14C]ascorbic acid by the rabbit iris-ciliary body were examined in vitro. Accumulation of labelled ascorbate was observed to be reduced significantly by ouabain(10(-4) M), low sodium solutions, 0 degree C and dinitrophenol (10(-3) M).
