Interfacial reactions between humic-like substances and lateritic clay: application to the preparation of "geomimetic" materials.

The aim of this study was to understand the mechanisms responsible for the strengthening of "geomimetic" materials, especially the chemical bonding between clay and humic substances. The mineral matter is lateritic clay which mainly consists in kaolinite, goethite, hematite and quartz. The other starting products are fulvic acid (FA) and lime. The preparation of these geomimetic materials is inspired from the natural stabilization of soils by humic substances occurring over thousands of years. The present process involves acidic and alkaline reactions followed by a curing period of 18days at 6…

Non-target effects of three formulated pesticides on microbially-mediated processes in a clay-loam soil.

An experiment was performed to study non-target effects of difenoconazole (fungicide), deltamethrin (insecticide) and ethofumesate (herbicide) on microbial parameters in a clay-loam soil. Pesticides were applied as commercial formulations to soil samples at different concentrations (5, 50 and 500 mg kg(-1) DW soil) and then incubated under laboratory conditions for 3 months. Throughout the incubation period, microbial parameters were determined at days 7, 30, 60 and 90. At 5 mg kg(-1) DW soil, none of the three pesticides caused significant changes in soil microbial parameters. In contrast, at…

Modeling multi-component transport and enhanced anaerobic dechlorination processes in a single fracture-clay matrix system.

Clayey tills contaminated with chlorinated solvents are a threat to groundwater and are difficult to remediate. A numerical model is developed for assessing leaching processes and for simulating the remediation via enhanced anaerobic dechlorination. The model simulates the transport of a contaminant in a single fracture-clay matrix system coupled with a reactive model for anaerobic dechlorination. The model takes into account microbially driven anaerobic dechlorination, where sequential Monod kinetics with competitive inhibition is used to model the reaction rates, and degradation is localized…

Removal of mercury(II) from aqueous solutions and chlor-alkali industry wastewater using 2-mercaptobenzimidazole-clay.

The 2-mercaptobenzimidazole loaded natural clay was prepared for the removal of Hg(II) from aqueous media. Adsorption of the metal ions from aqueous solution as a function of solution concentration, agitation time, pH, temperature, ionic strength, particle size of the adsorbent and adsorbent dose was studied. The adsorption process follows a pseudo-second-order kinetics. The rate constants as a function of initial concentration and temperature were given. The adsorption of Hg(II) increased with increasing pH and reached a plateau value in the pH range 4.0-8.0. The removal of Hg(II) was found t…

Adsorption of reovirus to clay minerals: effects of cation-exchange capacity, cation saturation, and surface area.

The adsorption of reovirus to clay minerals has been reported by several investigators, but the mechanisms defining this association have been studied only minimally. The purpose of this investigation was to elucidate the mechanisms involved with this interaction. More reovirus type 3 was adsorbed, in both distilled and synthetic estuarine water, by low concentrations of montmorillonite than by comparable concentrations of kaolinite containing a mixed complement of cations on the exchange complex. Adsorption to the clays was essentially immediate and was correlated with the cation-exchange cap…

Mechanistic insights into modification of clay minerals by detergent-derived surfactants and their impact on petroleum hydrocarbon uptake.

Understanding how surfactants interact with clay minerals is essential for controlling organoclay properties and improving hydrocarbon adsorption performance. However, distinguishing between surfactant adsorption on external surfaces and within interlayer galleries remains challenging using conventional techniques. In this study, we introduce a combined Washburn-immersion methodology that enables both quantification of total surfactant adsorption and localization of adsorbed species. Bentonite and kaolinite were modified using three commercial detergent formulations at concentrations below the…

Green-Engineered Clays Tightly Adsorb and Detoxify Environmentally Persistent Polychlorinated Biphenyls and Complex Mixtures.

Commonly occurring polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the environment have been linked to a broad range of adverse toxicological effects in both animals and humans. In this study, in vitro, in silico, and in vivo models were used to investigate the surface interactions of PCBs with green-engineered clays (GECs). Earlier studies showed that these GECs significantly reduced the toxicities of important planar aromatic chemicals such as benzene and aflatoxin B1 along with ochratoxin A, a chlorinated aromatic chemical. The overall objective for this study was to show that GECs could tightly adsorb…

Application of Sodium Polyacrylate Superabsorbent Polymer on Moisture Stability of Clay and Prediction of the Suction Potential of the Mixture.

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), such as sodium polyacrylate (PAAS), are the neutralized form of poly (acrylic acid) and belong to a class of materials characterized by three-dimensional networks of flexible polymer chains with exceptional water absorption and retention capacities. Due to these properties, PAAS has been widely used in agriculture as a soil water conditioner. This study investigates the potential of PAAS as a soil stabilizer for infrastructure applications. Three suction measurement techniques, namely the axis translation method, osmotic technique, and vapor equilibrium method,

Influence of pH and electric field on HgCl2 adsorption in clay-water systems and its environmental implications.

Mercury and its compounds, particularly mercury chloride (HgCl2), are highly toxic and persistent environmental pollutants. Understanding the adsorption behavior of HgCl2 in clay-water systems is essential for developing effective mercury remediation strategies. This study investigates the effects of pH and background cations on the adsorption kinetics, adsorption energy, and dipole moment of HgCl2 in montmorillonite clay systems. Adsorption experiments, along with infrared spectroscopy, were employed to measure the equilibrium adsorption capacity and kinetic behavior of HgCl2. The results sho…

A Closer Look at the Giant with Feet of Clay: Analyzing and Refining Neff´s Theory of Self-Compassion.

In this article, the authors aim to offer a perspective on self-compassion capable of becoming part of a unified psychology; however not "from scratch", but based on what Neff (2003a, b) proposed. This is through the analysis and refinement of her theory in two stages. First, they check whether the supposed six factors exist in the constitution of self-compassion using the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) technique in a collected sample for this study (249 participants, 69.8% women ranging in age from 18 to 65, median = 22). In the second stage, they analyze and refine Neff's theory based on

This study reports the analysis of diclofenac removal from aqueous solution using a novel adsorbent coating with amphoteric surface. This adsorbent coating was improved using a new amphoteric ratio to increase its performance for the removal of pharmaceuticals such as diclofenac. The adsorbent coating was formulated using acrylic polymer emulsion, smectite-based clay powder and epichlorohydrin-dimethylamine to obtain a layer form via the implementation of a facile synthesis method. In a previous study, this adsorbent coating was successful to remove cationic and anionic dyes. Therefore, this r…

Clay Minerals Affect the Solubility of Zn and Other Bivalent Cations in the Digestive Tract of Ruminants In Vitro.

Ruminants ingest large quantities of clay minerals along with inorganic soil constituents in roughages. The layered structure of clay minerals, however, may adsorb cations and may, thus, interfere with the ruminants' supply of essential trace metals, such as Zn, Mn, Cu, and Fe. As quantitative knowledge about interactions between clay ingestion and essential trace metal metabolism are largely lacking, this in vitro study focussed on the effect of clay on the solubility of dietary Zn and other bivalent trace metals in the digestive tract of ruminants. Therefore, buffered rumen fluid was used fo…

Effect of biochar amendment on sorption-desorption and dissipation of 17α‑ethinylestradiol in sandy loam and clay soils.

Animal manure application in agricultural land has caused the release of steroid estrogens in the soil environment and further movement to aquatic systems. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of biochar addition on sorption-desorption and dissipation behaviors of 17α‑ethinylestradiol (EE2) in two different textured soils. A Commerce sandy loam and a Shakey clay were selected and subjected to sterilization. Soil samples with and without sterilization were reacted with a series of EE2 solutions of different concentrations for sorption followed by desorption and quantificat…

Reduced nontronite-activated H2O2 for contaminants degradation: The beneficial role of clayed fractions in ISCO treatments.

Clayed fractions in aquifers are generally deemed to be detrimental for in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) treatments due to the difficulty of oxidant injection/transport and the retention/rebound of contaminants. Using a model clay mineral nontronite and a real sediment, here we show that the component of structural Fe(II) in clay minerals is particularly effective in activating hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to hydroxyl radicals (OH) for contaminants degradation under pH-neutral conditions. Using reduced nontronite (Fe(II)/Fetotal : 40 %) as a model Fe(II)-bearing clay mineral, 2 mg/L trichloroethy…
