Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Depression From an Evolutionary Perspective.

Evolutionary medicine attempts to solve a problem with which traditional medicine has struggled historically; how do we distinguish between diseased states and "Работает" responses to disease states? Fever and diarrhea represent classic examples of evolved adaptations that increase the likelihood of survival in response to the presence of pathogens in the body. Whereas, the severe mental disorders like psychotic mania or the schizophrenias may involve true "disease" states best treated pharmacologically, most non-psychotic "disorders" that revolve around negative affects like depression or anxi

Gamblers anonymous and cognitive-behavioral therapies for pathological gamblers.

Numerous types of treatments for pathological gambling have been described, but two of the most common are Gamblers Anonymous (GA) and cognitive-behavioral therapy. This paper describes some outcome data associated with the two approaches. It also reviews evidence suggesting that a combined intervention may enhance therapy engagement and reduce relapse rates.

Cognitive behavior therapy for somatization disorder: a preliminary investigation.

Patients diagnosed with somatization disorder have high rates of disability and often prove refractory to treatment. This preliminary investigation examines the effect of a 10-session cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) protocol on the physical discomfort and disability of severely impaired somatizers. The severity of patients' physical discomfort and disability was assessed at baseline, post-treatment, and eight months following treatment. Patients reported significant improvement in symptomatology and physical functioning between baseline and post-treatment as well as between baseline and follo

Treating insomnia in mild cognitive impairment: a novel approach combining transcranial magnetic stimulation with cognitive behavioral therapy.

UNLABELLED: Insomnia is a common comorbidity of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Poor sleep is linked to worsening quality of life and faster cognitive decline. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first-line non-pharmacologic treatment in older adults, but the neurocognitive complications of MCI can hinder the ability to engage with and adhere to CBT-I. Since daily applications of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have been shown to improve memory and global cognition in persons with MCI, we hypothesize that combining rTMS with CBT-I will yiel…

Psychotherapy and bulimia nervosa. Longer-term effects of interpersonal psychotherapy, behavior therapy, and cognitive behavior therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for bulimia nervosa has a specific therapeutic effect and determine whether a simplified behavioral treatment (BT) of CBT is as effective as the full treatment. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial involving three psychological treatments. Two planned comparisons, CBT with interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), and CBT with BT. Closed 12-month follow-up period. Independent assessors. SETTING: Secondary referral center. PATIENTS: Seventy-five consecutively referred patients with bulimia nervosa. Patients with concurrent anorexia ner

Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Individuals With Binge-Eating Disorder: What Works for Whom?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate moderators and predictors of response to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for binge-eating disorder (BED). METHOD: Moderators/predictors of treatment outcome, central to CBT and to DBT treatment, were chosen from an aggregated dataset of two clinical outcome studies with non-random allocation to treatment groups (N = 203). Both studies compared DBT-BED (n = 71) to a more intensive outpatient CBT program (CBT+, n = 132) in individuals with BED. Generalized linear models examined moderators and predictors of objective binge-eating …

Combined cognitive behavioral therapy and sound therapy for chronic tinnitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic tinnitus is a prevalent condition associated with significant distress and functional impairment. Despite various therapeutic attempts, there is currently no curative treatment. Although clinical management has advanced in recent years, overall outcomes remain unsatisfactory. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and sound therapy (ST) are established interventions; however, the efficacy of their combination (CBT + ST) relative to monotherapies or standard care remains uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy of combined CBT and ST for …

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as a Treatment for Electroconvulsive Therapy Phobia: Case Report and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can raise feelings of fear and anxiety in our patients. No documented cases of phobia regarding ECT or its treatment were found in the literature. METHODS: We present a patient who developed anxiety regarding ECT that was severe enough to be classified as a phobia. She was successfully treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for her phobia and was subsequently able to tolerate ECT. We conducted a literature review of ECT phobia, fear, and anxiety using MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and EMBASE. RESULTS: We outlined how CBT, in our specific case, was he…

Narrative therapy vs. cognitive-behavioral therapy for moderate depression: empirical evidence from a controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Systematic studies of the efficacy of Narrative Therapy (NT) for depression are sparse. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of individual NT for moderate depression in adults compared to Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). METHOD: Sixty-three depressed clients were assigned to either NT or CBT. The Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and Outcome Questionnaire-45.2 (OQ-45.2) were used as outcome measures. RESULTS: We found a significant symptomatic reduction in both treatments. Group differences favoring CBT were found on the BDI-II, but not on the OQ-45.2. CONCLUSIONS: Pre- t

Longitudinal treatment mediation of traditional cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy for anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between session-by-session putative mediators and treatment outcomes in traditional cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for mixed anxiety disorders. METHOD: Session-by-session changes in anxiety sensitivity and cognitive defusion were assessed in 67 adult outpatients randomized to CBT (n = 35) or ACT (n = 32) for a DSM-IV anxiety disorder. RESULTS: Multilevel mediation analyses revealed significant changes in the proposed mediators during both treatments (p < .001, d = .90-1.93), with ACT showing borderline grea…

Motivation enhancement therapy can increase utilization of cognitive-behavioral therapy: the case of social anxiety disorder.

Despite the documented efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for many psychological disorders, the vast majority of suffering people do not receive treatment. Treatment underutilization may prove at least partially due to ambivalence about seeking treatment. Ambivalence could result if, for example, people with social anxiety disorder (SAD) want to decrease their anxiety symptoms but are worried they will be judged negatively should they seek treatment. Motivation enhancement therapy (MET) can be a useful tool to help non-treatment seekers explore and resolve ambivalence regarding see

Digital treatment for tinnitus combining tinnitus retraining therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy: a Norwegian naturalistic study.

INTRODUCTION: Ten to fifteen percent of the population experience tinnitus. It is necessary to develop effective treatments for patients suffering from tinnitus. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of an internet-based treatment consisting of tinnitus retraining therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy for patients with primarily tinnitus. The secondary aims were to investigate changes in hyperacusis (hypersensitivity to sounds), misophonia (strong emotional reaction to a sound), depression, and anxiety. METHODS: A total of 144 patients diagnosed with tinnitus were included and asse…

Personality Pathology in Winter Depression: Prevalence and Treatment Trajectories in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Light Therapy.

Personality disorders are highly comorbid with major depression; however, findings are mixed regarding their impact on depression treatment outcomes and trajectories. Limited research has studied personality pathology in winter depression, specifically. This study (1) explored the prevalence of personality pathology in winter depression and (2) examined its effects on winter depression treatment trajectories. Participants were 174 adults with Major Depression, Recurrent with Seasonal Pattern from a randomized clinical trial comparing group cognitive-behavioral therapy for seasonal affective di

Outcomes One and Two Winters Following Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy or Light Therapy for Seasonal Affective Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The central public health challenge for winter seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is recurrence prevention. Preliminary studies suggest better long-term outcomes following cognitive-behavioral therapy tailored for SAD (CBT-SAD) than light therapy. The present study is a large, randomized head-to-head comparison of these treatments on outcomes one and two winters after acute treatment. METHOD: Community adults with major depression, recurrent with seasonal pattern (N=177) were followed one and two winters after a randomized trial of 6 weeks of CBT-SAD (N=88) or light therapy (N=89).

A randomized, controlled trial of acceptance and commitment therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy for chronic pain.

Individuals reporting chronic, nonmalignant pain for at least 6 months (N=114) were randomly assigned to 8 weekly group sessions of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) after a 4-6 week pretreatment period and were assessed after treatment and at 6-month follow-up. The protocols were designed for use in a primary care rather than specialty pain clinic setting. All participants remained stable on other pain and mood treatments over the course of the intervention. ACT participants improved on pain interference, depression, and pain-related anxiety; there

A randomized controlled trial of group cognitive-behavioral therapy vs. enhanced supportive therapy for auditory hallucinations.

There has been little research examining group cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for schizophrenia, especially compared to an active control treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of group CBT for auditory hallucinations compared to an enhanced supportive therapy (ST). Sixty five participants with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and persistent hallucinations were randomly assigned to group CBT or enhanced group ST. Primary outcomes focused on beliefs about voices and global auditory hallucinations severity. Secondary outcomes included psychotic symptoms, se

Effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Memory and Metamemory in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders.

Pathological doubt in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) suggests core deficits in memory and metamemory, but the nature of these deficits and their response to treatment remain unclear. This study aimed to address this gap by investigating (a) whether memory and metamemory problems in OCD are due to retrieval or encoding processes, and (b) the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on these functions. Sixty OCD patients and 60 matched healthy controls completed 3 episodic memory tasks involving different stimuli, with assessments of judgment-of-learning and feeling-of-knowing. OCD pati…

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for post COVID-19 condition: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The post COVID-19 condition (PCC) is a disabling condition with urgent need for effective treatments. This pilot randomized controlled trial examined the feasibility and efficacy of a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for PCC in a parallel-group design. METHODS: N = 53 individuals with PCC were randomized to CBT (n = 27) or 16-week wait-list control (WLC) condition (n = 26). One participant allocated to WLC was excluded after randomization, resulting in an intention-to-treat (ITT) sample of N = 52 participants (CBT: n = 27, age: M = 48.59, SD = 11.52, 77.8% female; WLC: n = 25, A
