Comparison of attention training and cognitive therapy in the treatment of social phobia: a preliminary investigation.

BACKGROUND: Prominent models of social phobia highlight the role played by attentional factors, such as self-focused attention, in the development and maintenance of social phobia. Elevated self-focused attention is associated with increases in self-rated anxiety. Treatments that aim to modify and change attentional processes, specifically self-focused attention, will have a direct effect on social phobia symptoms. Thus, Attention Training targets attentional focus. AIM: The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Attention Training in comparison to an established treatment for soc

[Effect of autogenic training with cognitive and symbol therapy on the treatment of patients with primary headache].

BACKGROUND: Only a minor part of headaches are associated with an organic abnormality in the nervous system. In case of migraine and tension headache, the main provoking factor is psychological stress. Furthermore, these syndromes often occur together with depression and anxiety disorders, and when these comorbid conditions are present headache attacks tend to be more frequent, longer and stronger, causing an increase in the consumption of antimigraine agents, and at the same time increase the consumption of antidepressant and anxiolytic agents. Further to drugs, modified versions of Schultz-t

Cognitive distraction and relaxation training for the control of side effects due to cancer chemotherapy.

Sixty cancer chemotherapy patients were randomly assigned to one of six conditions formed by a 3(cognitive distraction, relaxation training, no intervention) x 2(high anxiety, low anxiety) factorial design. All patients were followed for five consecutive chemotherapy sessions. Outcome measures included patient reports, nurse observations, and physiological indices. Results indicated that distraction patients reported less nausea prior to chemotherapy and lower systolic blood pressures after chemotherapy than controls. Relaxation training patients reported less nausea prior to chemotherapy and

Reducing motion sickness: a comparison of autogenic-feedback training and an alternative cognitive task.

Eighteen men were randomly assigned to three groups matched for susceptibility to Coriolis motion sickness. All subjects were given six Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index (CSSI) tests separated by 5-d intervals. Treatment Group I subjects were taught to control their own autonomic responses before the third, fourth, and fifth CSSI tests (6 h total training). Group II subjects were given "sham" training in an alternative cognitive task under conditions otherwise identical to those of Group I. Group III subjects received no treatment. Results showed that Group I subjects could withstand the

Normoxic brain endurance training is associated with cognitive and oculomotor performance during acute hypoxia.

PURPOSE: Acute hypoxia can impair processing speed and visual search. In this exploratory non-randomised controlled study, we examined whether normoxic brain endurance training (BET) is associated with cognitive and oculomotor performance during acute hypoxic exposure. METHODS: Thirteen adults (7 females) completed a 6-week BET programme, while 23 separately recruited control participants (10 females) did not. Both groups were tested under normobaric hypoxia (fraction of inspired oxygen, FiO2 = 0.14, simulated 3,200 m). Participants performed a psychomotor vigilance task (PVT), visual search

High Intensity Interval Training in Aged Female Mice Preserves Physical, Cognitive, and Cardiovascular Function.

BACKGROUND: Along with advancing age comes declines in physical, cognitive, and cardiovascular function. This diminished capacity may lead to decreased ability to perform activities of daily living, disability onset, and loss of independence. Exercise is a regenerative medicine therapy that can mitigate this loss of function. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is an aerobic exercise paradigm consisting of intense activity periods interspersed with bouts of active recovery. Previously we demonstrated that HIIT preserved physical function in adult, middle-aged, and older male mice. However,

High-intensity interval training in aged female mice preserves physical, cognitive, and cardiovascular function.

With advancing age comes declines in physical, cognitive, and cardiovascular function, leading to decreased performance in activities of daily living and eventual loss of independence. Exercise may delay this decline. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) consists of intense activity periods interspersed with bouts of active recovery. Previously, we demonstrated that HIIT preserved physical function in male mice across the lifespan. In the current work, we extend our prior investigations to include females and add a multitude of assessments previously unstudied. We hypothesized that cognitiv

Repetitive negative thinking in OCD: Evaluation of novel scenarios for cognitive bias modification training.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence suggests that repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is underpinned by interpretation bias which is heightened among individuals with OCD. Cognitive bias modification for interpretation training (CBM-I) may reduce RNT by modifying interpretation bias which could reduce OCD symptoms. This study evaluated novel scenarios in terms of appropriateness and validity for use in a future CBM-I study targeting OCD-related RNT. This included analysis of the associations between interpretation bias and OCD symptoms, RNT, and OCD-specific rumination, respectively. METHODS:

Efficacy of smartphone application-based multi-domain cognitive training in older adults without dementia.

BACKGROUND: As the population ages and the prevalence of dementia increases, there is a growing emphasis on the importance of cognitive training to prevent dementia. A smartphone application-based cognitive training software program, BeauBrain Trainer (BBT), has been developed to provide better access to cognitive training for older adults. Numerous studies have revealed the effectiveness of cognitive training using a cognitive assessment tool. However, relatively few studies have evaluated brain activation using brain imaging as a result of improved cognitive function. METHODS: All participa…

Rt-fMRI neurofeedback-guided cognitive reappraisal training modulates amygdala responsivity in posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic experiences are associated with neurofunctional dysregulations in key regions of the emotion regulation circuits. In particular, amygdala responsivity to negative stimuli is exaggerated while engagement of prefrontal regulatory control regions is attenuated. Successful application of emotion regulation (ER) strategies may counteract this disbalance, however, application of learned strategies in daily life is hampered in individuals afflicted by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We hypothesized that a single session of real-time fMRI (rtfMRI) guided upregulation of pre

Computerized cognitive training in prostate cancer patients on androgen deprivation therapy: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Prostate cancer patients who have undergone androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) may experience cognitive impairment, yet there is an unmet need for nonpharmacological interventions to address cognitive impairment in this population. This study examines the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a home-based computerized cognitive training (CCT) program to treat cancer-related cognitive impairment. METHODS: Sixty men who had received ≥ 3 months of ADT were screened for at least mild cognitive or neurobehavioral impairment and randomized to 8 weeks of CCT or usual care.…

Choline and Working Memory Training Improve Cognitive Deficits Caused by Prenatal Exposure to Ethanol.

Prenatal ethanol exposure is associated with deficits in executive function such as working memory, reversal learning and attentional set shifting in humans and animals. These behaviors are dependent on normal structure and function in cholinergic brain regions. Supplementation with choline can improve many behaviors in rodent models of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and also improves working memory function in normal rats. We tested the hypothesis that supplementation with choline in the postnatal period will improve working memory during adolescence in normal and ethanol-exposed animals, a

Effects of cognitive bias modification training on neural alcohol cue reactivity in alcohol dependence.

OBJECTIVE: In alcohol-dependent patients, alcohol cues evoke increased activation in mesolimbic brain areas, such as the nucleus accumbens and the amygdala. Moreover, patients show an alcohol approach bias, a tendency to more quickly approach than avoid alcohol cues. Cognitive bias modification training, which aims to retrain approach biases, has been shown to reduce alcohol craving and relapse rates. The authors investigated effects of this training on cue reactivity in alcohol-dependent patients. METHOD: In a double-blind randomized design, 32 abstinent alcohol-dependent patients received e

Concreteness training reduces dysphoria: proof-of-principle for repeated cognitive bias modification in depression.

A tendency toward abstract and overgeneral processing is a cognitive bias hypothesized to causally contribute to symptoms of depression. This hypothesis predicts that training dysphoric individuals to become more concrete and specific in their thinking would reduce depressive symptoms. To test this prediction, 60 participants with dysphoria were randomly allocated either to (a) concreteness training; (b) bogus concreteness training, matched with concreteness training for treatment rationale, experimenter contact, and treatment duration but without active engagement in concrete thinking; (c) a

Cognitive function and mood during acute cold stress after extended military training and recovery.

INTRODUCTION: Acute cold stress is often accompanied by exposure to other adverse factors, such as sleep loss, under-nutrition, and psychological stress that singly and together may affect cognitive function. METHODS: The effect of moderate cold stress on cognitive function was investigated in 15 male volunteers exposed to cold air (10 degrees C) for 4 h after they had completed an intense, 61-d regimen (U.S. Army Ranger training). The single cohort of volunteers was tested on three separate occasions: (1) immediately after completing Ranger training; (2) 2 d later when they had partially rec

Increasing preoperative cognitive reserve to prevent postoperative delirium and postoperative cognitive decline in cardiac surgical patients (INCORE): Study protocol for a randomized clinical trial on cognitive training.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative delirium (POD) and postoperative cognitive decline (POCD) can be observed after cardiosurgical interventions. Taken together, these postoperative neurocognitive disorders (PNCDs) contribute to increased morbidity and mortality. Preoperative risk factors of PNCD, such as decreased neuropsychometric performance or decreased cognitive daily activities, can be interpreted as reduced cognitive reserve. This study aims to build up cognitive reserves to protect against the development of PNCD through preoperative, home-based, cognitive training. METHODS: The planned resea…

Enhancing resilience, flexibility, and well-being through cognitive-emotional training: behavioral and neural evidence.

College students often struggle to regulate emotions under changing academic and social stress, highlighting the need for interventions targeting adaptive emotion regulation (ER). Here, we tested a 5-week online intervention designed to enhance ER and cognitive flexibility in college students. Participants (N = 39) were pseudo-randomly assigned to the experimental (N = 20) or control (N = 19) group, with higher distress individuals preferentially assigned to the experimental condition. Behavioral, self-report, eye-tracking, and brain imaging measures were collected before and after the trainin

Effects of imagery training on cognitive function among collegiate athletes: a randomized controlled trial.

Cognitive functions are essential for athletic performance but are often compromised by fatigue, stress, and the combined demands of sport and academic study. Both physical exercise and motor imagery shown to influence cognition, but, their comparative acute effects remain underexplored in collegiate athletes. This study compared the effects of squat imagery, squat execution, and quiet rest on cognitive performance. Ninety-eight collegiate athletes were randomly assigned to a squat imagery group (30-min seated squat imagery; n = 36), a squat execution group (five sets of 1-min squats separated
