Between 1980 and 1993, collagenous colitis was diagnosed in 56 patients at UCLA. These authors evaluated the histology of almost 300 biopsies from these patients to further clarify the relationship between diagnostic histology and site of biopsy. As expected, their patients were predominately women (71%), with a mean age at diagnosis of 59 yr. Chronicity of diarrheal symptoms ranged from 3 months to 15 yr. Benign dysplasia is a pathological process in the female breast associated with hypertrophy of interlobular and periductal connective tissue. It leads to disappearance of the lobular structure of this organ. It was found that the mammary tumours contain more collagen in comparison to the normal breast. In the normal breast collagen type I and type III constitute 70% and 25% of the total collagen content, respectively. The investigated tumors contain mainly a complex of collagen type I and type III which cannot be dissociated by the methods used for collagen preparation.

A simple and reproducible method for analyzing small samples of cartilage collagens was developed. Following extraction with guanidine HCl, the cartilage specimens were digested directly with CNBr and the resultant peptides separated by gel-permeation high-performance liquid chromatography. Resting cartilage collagen CNBr peptide maps differed from normal in two inherited chondrodystrophies, achondrogenesis II and spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita.

A patient is reported with chronic abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and associated radiological and endoscopic abnormalities of the sigmoid colon. Light and electron microscopic study of colorectal mucosa showed abnormal collagenous thickening of the subepithelial basement membrane. The authors felt that the clinical and morphological features justified a diagnosis of collagenous colitis. Review of the literature suggested that collagenous colitis was still an unrecognised entity.

It is conceivable that intramolecular and intermolecular crosslinks of collagen may be involved in the formation of hypertrophic scar, but little is known about the relationship between hypertrophic scar and crosslinks of collagen. We have isolated a new crosslinking amino acid from collagen and have named it pyridinoline. In this investigation, we examined the content of pyridinoline in human normal skin, mature scar and hypertrophic scar. An appreciable amount of pyridinoline was found in collagen of hypertrophic scar, but pyridinoline is virtually absent in collagen of normal skin.

Despite being a very widespread protein, collagen is an unusual molecule possessing a great tensile strength conferred by a rope-like structure and intermolecular crosslinks. Our current knowledge of the biosynthesis of collagen is providing some insights into certain diseases of connective tissue and is also helping us to understand the healing processes of wounds and diseased tissues.
