Fine structural evidence of mechanoreception in spinal lumbosacral accessory lobes of pigeons.

In the lumbosacral spinal cord of birds there are accessory lobes which protrude into the vertebral canal. The accessory lobes consist of multipolar neurons and glia-derived glycogen cells. It has been suggested that these lobes function as a sense organ of equilibrium. Therefore the lobes were studied ultrastructurally to look for possible mechanoreceptive structures. Extracellular lacunae extend from the periphery deep into each lobe. The dendrites of neurons ramify into the lacunae where they issue finger-like processes which do not contact any other cells and which are not contacted by bou

The effect of acute lithium and rubidium pretreatment on apomorphine-induced pecking in pigeons.

The effects of different doses of lithium (5-320 mg/kg intramuscularly) and rubidium (0.25 32 mg/kg intramuscularly) on apomorphine-induced pecking were investigated in pigeons. These two cations did not induce pecking by itself. Intramuscular administration of apomorphine (a mixed D1/D2 dopamine receptors agonist, 0.1-1.6 mg/kg) induced pecking in a dose-dependent manner. SCH 23390 (D1 dopamine receptor antagonist, 0.02-0.08 mg/kg) and sulpiride (D2 dopamine receptor antagonist, 25-100 mg/kg) decreased apomorphine-induced pecking dose-dependently. Combination of SCH 23390 (0.04 mg/kg) with su

Shivering thermogenesis in the pigeon: the effects of activity, diurnal factors, and feeding state.

Shivering (electromyographic activity of the pectoral muscle), oxygen consumption, and body temperature were measured from undisturbed pigeons for periods of several weeks, and segments from the midparts of each phase of the light-dark cycle were compared at various ambient temperatures and feeding regimes. Behavior was recorded with a video camera. None of the observed types of behavior (e.g., walking, preening, feeding, drinking, pecking, defecation) induced spurious electrical activity in the pectoral muscle. On the other hand, none of these behaviors directly inhibited ongoing shivering. T

[The occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes in fecal samples of pigeons].

Listeria spp. were isolated from faeces samples from 12 (3.4%) of 350 pigeons examined. Three isolates were identified as L. monocytogenes (1x serovar 1/2a, 1/2b, and 4ab), eight isolates were L. innocua (2x serovar 6a, 6x serovar 6b), and two isolates L. seeligeri (serovar 6b). One fecal sample yielded a mixed culture of L. monocytogenes and L. innocua. The results indicate that pigeons are not important in the epidemiology of listeriosis in man and animals.

[Comparative pathogenicity tests of eight pigeon paramyxovirus 1 variant isolates in pigeons, turkeys and chickens].

Eight pigeon paramyxovirus-1 isolates which were isolated from diseased pigeons were comparatively tested for their pathogenicity in chickens, turkeys and racing pigeons. Intramuscular inoculation of all of the eight viruses resulted in all pigeons in clinical signs like polyuria, lameness of wings and in parts also in torticollis. Also, intravenously inoculated chickens developed distinct signs such as apathy, liquid droppings and in part also torticollis. Six of the eight PMV-1 isolates induced in turkeys similar signs as in chickens; inoculation of two isolates yielded no signs in turkeys.

Effects of prior saline-morphine discrimination by pigeons on three-way discrimination including two morphine doses.

The discriminative stimulus properties of morphine sulfate (MS) and their alteration by naltrexone (NTX) and d-amphetamine (AMP) challenges were examined in a quantitative dose 1, dose 2, and saline (SAL) drug discrimination task utilizing 1.8 mg/kg MS, 10 mg/kg MS, and SAL as discriminative stimuli under a fixed-ratio 30 schedule of food-maintained behavior in two groups of White Carneaux pigeons. Group A (Gp A) (n = 6) subjects (Ss) were initially experimentally- and drug-naive, whereas group B Ss (n = 4) were originally trained in a two-choice MS versus SAL discrimination task, and had a lo

Acute and chronic effects of methsuximide and mephenytoin on the delayed-matching-to-sample performance of pigeons.

Acute and chronic effects of methsuximide and mephenytoin were examined in pigeons performing under a delayed-matching-to-sample procedure. Acute administrations of methsuximide (25-175 mg/kg) and mephenytoin (40-160 mg/kg) produced generally dose-dependent decreases in accuracy. At the two highest doses, methsuximide decreased rate of responding to the sample stimulus; mephenytoin did so only at the highest dose. At low doses, both methsuximide and mephenytoin increased response rate over control. After 20 sessions of daily exposure to methsuximide (100 mg/kg) or mephenytoin (80 mg/kg), toler

Effects of methsuximide on schedule-controlled responding in the pigeon.

Acute and chronic effects of methsuximide (25, 50, 75, and 100 mg/kg), a succinimide with anticonvulsant properties, were examined in pigeons responding under a multiple fixed-ratio 50 fixed-interval 90-sec schedule of food delivery. The clearest acute effect of methsuximide was a substantial reduction in response rates under both components of the multiple schedule when the drug was administered at 100 mg/kg. Detailed analysis of the temporal distribution of responding under the fixed-interval failed to reveal rate-dependent drug effects. Tolerance appeared to develop to the effects of methsu

Olfactory deprivation in pigeons: examination of methods applied in homing experiments.

1. Effectiveness of three methods of olfactory deprivation or impairment was tested by means of unconditioned cardiac acceleration in response to odorous stimuli. 2. Occlusion of nostrils reduced stimulus intensity to approx. 20-30% of the level in unimpeded state. Capability of stimulus quantification remained unimpaired. 3. Bilateral olfactory nerve section and backward bending of the nerve stumps irreversibly eliminated responses to weaker stimuli. With higher concentrations of the odorant, pigeons responded at a reduced level, most likely due to trigeminal reception. 4. Spraying the nasal

Effects of chlorpromazine on fixed-ratio responding: modification by fixed-interval discriminative stimuli.

Effects of chlorpromazine (1 to 100 mg/kg) were assessed on two pigeons' responding under various modifications of a multiple schedule of food delivery. During a fixed-interval component, the first response after 5 min produced food; during the subsequent, fixed-ratio component, the 30th response produced food. Modifications of the schedule entailed changes in stimulus conditions imposed during the fixed-ratio component that did not systematically alter characteristics of performance under non-drug conditions. In the first phase of the experiment, distinctive visual stimuli were correlated wit

[Experimental paratuberculosis: pathogenicity of mycobactin-dependent mycobacteria strains to calves].

The pathogenicity for calves of two strains of wood-pigeon mycobacteria isolated in our laboratory, one strain isolated in the United Kingdom, one strain isolated from a Roe-deer in Denmark and three strains of M. paratuberculosis, were compared. Seven groups of four 3 to 4 week-old calves were infected by the intravenous route using 10(6) to 10(9) viable units. They were slaughtered one year after the exposure or earlier if their state required it. The macroscopic and microscopic lesions and cultures from the mesenteric lymph nodes, ileon and caecum were studied. At necropsy, the post-mortem

Discriminative stimulus effects of pentobarbital in pigeons.

Pigeons were trained to discriminate the IM injection of pentobarbital (5 or 10 mg/kg) from saline in a task in which 20 consecutive pecks on one of two response keys produced access to mixed grain. Pentobarbital (1.0--17.8 mg/kg) produced a dose-related increase in the percentage of the total session responses that occurred on the pentobarbital-appropriate key. The concomitant administration of bemegride (5.6--17.8 mg/kg) antagonized the discriminative control of behavior exerted by the training dose of pentobarbital. Benzodiazepines, diazepam (1.0 mg/kg) and clobazam (3.2 mg/kg), and barbitu

Effects of chlordiazepoxide on comparable rates of punished and unpunished responding.

Identical overall rates and patterns of key pecking by pigeons were maintained under a multiple fixed-interval schedule of food presentation. In one component, every thirtieth response produced an electric shock (punishment) whereas during the other component the response that produced food had to be preceded by a pause of a minimum (10 or 11 s) duration. Although chlordiazepoxide (1.0--17.0 mg/kg) increased both punished and unpunished responding, greater increases were uniformly obtained with punished responding.

The distribution of interresponse times in the pigeon during variable-interval reinforcement.

Three pigeons' pecks were reinforced on 1- and 2-min variable-interval schedules, and frequency distributions of their interresponse times (IRTs) were recorded. The conditional probability that a response would fall into any IRT category was estimated by the interresponse-times-per-opportunity transformation (IRTs/op). The resulting functions were notable chiefly for the relatively low probability of IRTs in the 0.2- to 0.3-sec range; in other respects they varied within and between subjects. The overall level of the curves generally rose over the course of 32 experimental hours, but their sha
