The "toxic" effect of guinea pig serum (GPS) on Mycoplasma pneumoniae cells was tested under various conditions, using rounding and killing of the cells as test systems. Both activities could be inhibited by heat inactivation (56 C, 30 min). Killing required both Ca2+ and Mg2+, rounding only Mg2+. Both activities were temperature dependent and no rounding or killing occurred at 4C. BACKGROUND: A 15-year-old young man with a history of recurrent streptococcal pharyngitis and hereditary angioedema presented for tonsillectomy. Preoperative physical examination was normal with the exception of enlarged pharyngeal tonsils with crypts and pustules; there was no evidence of angioedema. Laboratory studies were remarkable for a C4 level of 8 mg/dL (normal 20-50 mg/dL) and C1 inhibitor (C1 INH) level of 4 mg/dL (normal 11-26 mg/dL).

Simultaneous serum and synovial fluid CH50, C1, C4, C2, C1 esterase inhibitor and C3 protein were determined in a patient with acute erythema nodosum leprosum. The pattern of synovial fluid complement activity coupled with the demonstration of multiple lepra bacilli free and within histiocytes is more consistent with an infectious than an immune complex induced synovitis.

Immune complexes and complement levels were assayed in sera from a group of 69 hemophilic children. Renal involvement is found in 20 to 50% of cases of Partial lipodystrophy (PLD). We report 8 cases of PLD of which 6 had a glomerular nephropathy and 2 had no renal disease but all had persistent hypocomplementemia and 5 had circulating nephritic factor (C3NeF).
