[Pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation].

Our aim is to summarize the new European Resuscitation Council (ERC) 2021 guidelines on paediatric life support. In children, exhaustion of compensatory mechanisms in respiratory or circulatory failure leads to cardiac arrest. Recognition and treatment of children in critical condition are the most important element of its prevention. With the ABCDE approach, life-threatening problems can be identified and treated using simple interventions (bag-mask ventilation, intraosseous access, fluid bolus, etc.). Important new recommendations: 4-hand ventilation during bag-mask ventilation, target satur

Superior Clinical, Quality of Life, Functional, and Health Economic Outcomes with Pneumatic Compression Therapy for Lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: Pneumatic compression therapy is one of several options for the management of lymphedema. The lack of clarity around clinical outcomes, quality of life, cost of care, and its proper application, as a function of lymphedema complexity, limit its use in clinical practice. This is compounded by difficulties associated with insurance approval and uncertainty about the role of this modality in the treatment algorithm. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the healthcare economics and value of pneumatic compression therapy for lymphedema. METHODS: All patients who underwent treatmen

The effect of graduated compression stockings on long-term outcomes after stroke: the CLOTS trials 1 and 2.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Most randomized controlled trials of venous thromboembolism prophylaxis have focused on reduction of deep vein thrombosis, predominantly asymptomatic deep vein thrombosis, detected on imaging. We aimed to estimate the effects of graduated compression stockings on venous thromboembolism events, survival, and functional status at 6 months after stroke. METHODS: The CLOTS Trials adopted an international multicentre, parallel group design, with central randomization and a 1:1 treatment allocation. In CLOTS Trial 1, 2518 immobile stroke patients were allocated thigh-length

Biologically derived companding algorithm for high dynamic range mammography images.

The screening mammography is currently the best procedure available for early detection of the breast cancer. The acquired mammograms are high dynamic range (HDR) images having a 12 bit grayscale resolution. When viewed by a radiologist, a single image must be examined several times, each time focusing on a different intensity range. We have developed a biologically derived mammography companding (BDMC) algorithm for compression, expansion, and enhancement of mammograms, in a fully automatic way. The BDMC is comprised of two main processing stages: 1) preliminary processing operations which in

[Role of multispiral CT angiography in diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic cerebral circulatory insufficiency].

Implementing in our clinical practice multispiral CT angiography (MSCTA) of the brachiocephalic arteries into the diagnostic algorithm has made it possible to somewhat deviate from the "golden standard", i.e., the conventional contrast-enhanced angiography, in determining the indications for surgical interventions in a total of 328 patients presenting with chronic cerebral circulatory insufficiency (CCCI). All the patients diagnosed as having multifocal atherosclerosis are subjected to duplex scanning of the brachiocephalic arteries Detecting haemodynamically significant stenoses of the caroti

Evaluation of the thyroid nodule.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules are common, yet treatment modalities range from observation to surgical resection. Because thyroid nodules are frequently found incidentally during routine physical examination or imaging performed for another reason, physicians from a diverse range of specialties encounter thyroid nodules. Clinical decision making depends on proper evaluation of the thyroid nodule. METHODS: The current literature was reviewed and synthesized. RESULTS: Current evidence allows the formulation of recommendations and a general algorithm for evaluating the incidental thyroid nodule.

Implicit generation with pretrained priors for single-pixel imaging.

Single-pixel imaging (SPI) enables image recovery from highly compressed measurements but remains sensitive to weak or mismatched priors. We present an implicit generation framework that reconstructs SPI images by optimizing the input of fixed pretrained networks under measurement consistency. By cascading denoising and super-resolution networks, the proposed method jointly exploits complementary learned priors, while an Anderson-accelerated fixed-point reset explicitly searches for prior-data-consistent solutions to improve reconstruction. Experimental results show improved detail preservatio

A systematic review on clinical and imaging criteria for liposuction candidacy in lower extremity lymphedema.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Lower-extremity lymphedema is difficult to treat, especially after failing conservative management. Liposuction (also termed lipoaspiration or suction-assisted lipectomy) has been identified as a treatment option for patients who failed conservative management in lower-extremity lymphedema. This systematic review evaluates the clinical and imaging criteria used to determine candidacy for liposuction in adults with lower-extremity lymphedema. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyse

A Comprehensive Review of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome (CuTS) is the compression of the ulnar nerve as it courses through the cubital tunnel near the elbow at the location colloquially referred to as the "funny bone". CuTS is the most commonly diagnosed mononeuropathy after carpal tunnel syndrome. Cubital tunnel syndrome can manifest as numbness, tingling, or pain in the ring/small fingers and dorsoulnar hand. Repetitive pressure, stretching, flexion, or trauma of the elbow joint are known causes of CuTS. Chronic ulnar nerve compression and CuTS, when left untreated, can lead to atrophy of the first dorsal interosseus muscl

Automatic Seizure Detection Based on Stockwell Transform and Transformer.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease associated with abnormal neuronal activity in the brain. Seizure detection algorithms are essential in reducing the workload of medical staff reviewing electroencephalogram (EEG) records. In this work, we propose a novel automatic epileptic EEG detection method based on Stockwell transform and Transformer. First, the S-transform is applied to the original EEG segments, acquiring accurate time-frequency representations. Subsequently, the obtained time-frequency matrices are grouped into different EEG rhythm blocks and compressed as vectors in these EEG

Efficient fictitious eigenfrequency issue-free full-wave simulation of 3D ultrasonic NDE using CFIE-based Nyström method accelerated by kernel independent algorithm.

Conventional boundary integral equations (CBIE) based ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation (UNDE) models admit multiple solutions at some frequencies, which is known as the fictitious eigenfrequency issue. At the fictitious eigenfrequencies, numerical methods used for simulating the UNDE model, such as the Nystrom method (NM), for example, result in singular matrix equations, which cannot be solved. To avoid the fictitious eigenfrequency issue in CBIE for 3D UNDE problem, this paper uses the combined field integral equation (CFIE) formulation and proposes a high-order Nyström method (NM) acce

Real-time Robust Semantic Segmentation via Low-Resolution Ensemble.

Semantic segmentation algorithms constitute a critical component for vision-based perception in robotics and autonomous driving. Real-world deployment in uncertain environments requires such algorithms to be both low-latency and robust against common corruptions. However, the limited representation ability of real-time models and the high computational overhead of existing robust models render real-time robust semantic segmentation particularly challenging. In this paper, we begin by systematically evaluating the robustness of existing real-time models and observe that inference on down-sample

Initial management of leg ulcers in community settings: proposals for a new algorithm for general practitioners.

Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) affect 1% of individuals in developed countries, posing a significant public health challenge due to complications, patient disability and healthcare costs. While high compression (>40mmHg) is the gold standard, delays in vascular assessment often postpone the adapted treatment. The ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI) is recommended to exclude peripheral arterial disease, but its availability and reliability may vary, particularly in patients with diabetes. Given these challenges, immediate mild compression (≤20mmHg) has been proposed as a first and safe interim appro

[The measurement of nerve root tensile stress].

UNLABELLED: In the majority of the cases sciatica is caused by an intervertebral disc herniation compressing the nerve root. The compression determines an increased tension in the nerve root. We believe that the magnitude of this stress offers more information about the root impairment that the disc displacement measured on MRI images. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present in this paper an original device which allows for intraoperative root stress analysis. The device consists of a force transducer composed of an elastic element and a displacement limitation. RESULTS: The initial measurements we

Pixel shift-based reversible steganography for privacy-preserving medical images.

Steganography plays a critical role in preserving the privacy of medical images by protecting sensitive patient information without compromising image quality or diagnostic utility. This paper proposes a novel lossless privacy protection algorithm for medical images based on pixel displacement. The core innovation lies in the synergistic combination of physical transformation and deep learning-specifically, the integration of shift-rectification with a dual-carrier embedding mechanism. The proposed method begins by applying byte-level pixel shifting to the confidential medical image to generat

Clinical Use of Trabecular Bone Score: The 2023 ISCD Official Positions.

Osteoporosis can currently be diagnosed by applying the WHO classification to bone mineral density (BMD) assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). However, skeletal factors other than BMD contribute to bone strength and fracture risk. Lumbar spine TBS, a grey-level texture measure which is derived from DXA images has been extensively studied, enhances fracture prediction independent of BMD and can be used to adjust fracture probability from FRAX® to improve risk stratification. The purpose of this International Society for Clinical Densitometry task force was to review the existing e

On the Challenges Associated with Obtaining Reproducible Measurements Using SWEI in the Median Nerve.

This work discusses challenges we have encountered in acquiring reproducible measurements of shear wave speed (SWS) in the median nerve and suggests methods for improving reproducibility. First, procedural acquisition challenges are described, including nerve echogenicity, transducer pressure and transmit focal depth. Second, we present an iterative, radon sum-based algorithm that was developed specifically for measuring the SWS in median nerves. SWSs were measured using single track location shear wave elasticity imaging (SWEI) in the median nerves of six healthy volunteers and six patients d

Feasibility of the capnogram to monitor ventilation rate during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

AIM: The rates of chest compressions (CCs) and ventilations are both important metrics to monitor the quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Capnography permits monitoring ventilation, but the CCs provided during CPR corrupt the capnogram and compromise the accuracy of automatic ventilation detectors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of an automatic algorithm based on the capnogram to detect ventilations and provide feedback on ventilation rate during CPR, specifically addressing intervals where CCs are delivered. METHODS: The dataset used to develop and test the
