Correlates of condom use in the young adult population in Ontario.

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Data from the Ontario Health Survey were used to identify sociodemographic, lifestyle and sexual history characteristics associated with the use of condoms for protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in randomly selected adults between the ages of 16 and 44 years who had had two or more sexual partners in the 12 months before the survey (n = 2,699). RESULTS: Forty-two percent reported not having used condoms for protection against STDs. Those most likely to use condoms were 16 to 24 years of age, males, students, non-binge-drinkers, urban residents, and…

The validity of self-reported condom use among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Research and public health interventions designed to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) often are based on … idence of 63 infections. Although three individuals who had STDs reported to be consistent users of condoms, a significant association (P < 0.05) was found between those who reported more frequent condom use with the last two partners and the absence of STDs. CONCLUSION: In this group of adolescents, self-report of condom use with the last two partners w …

Consistency of condom use among users of injectable contraceptives.

Use of condoms for protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) was examined over a nine-month period among 536 women from 17 clinics in southeastern Texas who had selected the injectable depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) as a contraceptive. Among women who were using condoms prior to receiving DMPA, nearly half said they never or rarely did so after initiating DMPA use; only 18% of all women in the study used condoms consistently while relying on DMPA. Factors associated with consistent condom use were being black (odds ratio of 2.0), being unmarried (odds ratio of 2.2), hav…

Non-condom use among female nurses in Zambia.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate non-condom user rate and to characterize non-condom users among female nurses. DESIGN: Cross sectional. SETTING: Health institutions. SUBJECTS: Data from 640 (86.5pc) out of 740 consenting female nurses were available for analyses. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Non-condom user rate. RESULTS: Non-condom user rate (per 100) among the female nurses was 73.1pc (95pc CI69.7 to 76.5). Non-condom users tended to be aged above 30 years (OR 1.57; 95pc CI 1.02 to 2.40), midwives (OR 1.56; 95pc CI 1.03 to 2.37), married (OR 2.70; 95pc CI 1.73 to 4.21), not to think that spouse/partne

Determinants of condom use among intravenous drug users.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the factors associated with condom use among a cohort of sexually active intravenous drug users (IVDU). DESIGN: Data … V-positive is an important determinant of condom use; HIV testing may therefore increase the use of condoms. In addition, interventions to change sexual behaviors may need to focus on the type of sexual partner.

Technical considerations in the use of external condom catheter systems.

Since the advent of rehabilitation engineering new advances have been made that have revolutionized condom catheter drainage systems (CCDS). An innovative CCDS has been designed that ensures unobstructed urine flow. Its condom catheter has several unique design features. It has a double row of convolutions near the catheter tip that prevent kinking and twisting so that the pathway remains open. The condom catheter features a unique inner flap that fits snugly on the glans to prevent backflow of urine on the shaft. This condom catheter is connected to a vented leg bag that eliminates the develo

Condom use and use-effectiveness in high-risk populations.

In vitro evidence strongly suggests that latex condoms provide an impenetrable barrier for the passage of infectious agents, but few have studied the use-effectiveness of condoms in preventing sexually transmitted diseases. In 1971, a prospective evaluation of the condom failed to demonstrate efficacy against infections with gonorrhea because users were exposed to infectious secretions before the condom was used. An ongoing multicenter study of female prostitutes in the United States shows that none of 22 women who always use condoms with all male partners has antibody to human immunodeficienc…

Complications from external (condom) urinary drainage devices.

External urinary drainage devices are usually considered safe and are in wide clinical use. There are only a few reports of complications arising from their improper use. We present 6 patients who suffered major complications from external condom drainage at home. The etiology and preventive measures are discussed.

Relationship between condom strength and failure during use.

The relationship between condom strength and failure during use was examined in six volunteers using artificially deteriorated condoms. Samples of each condom set exposed to ultraviolet light for three to eleven hours were tested for strength by air burst procedures. The remaining condoms were used by volunteers protected from pregnancy by other means. Burst pressure fell to 35% and burst volume to 17% of untreated levels after six hours of ultraviolet exposure. A maximum mean breakage rate during use of 30% was obtained at this time, although individuals experienced breakage rates up to 70% a…

Banana in a Condom: An Unusual Cause of Small Bowel Obstruction.

An otherwise healthy, 34-year-old man presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, which began a day after he ingested a banana-stuffed condom. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) abdomen and pelvis revealed a dilated small bowel with a transition point, findings consistent with small bowel obstruction. Abdominopelvic ascites was also noted on imaging, which was concerning for bowel distress. He was taken to the operating room for an exploratory laparotomy, which revealed a high-grade obstruction by a foreign body, a banana stuffed in a condom, in t

Understanding heterosexual condom use among homeless men.

This study uses an event-based approach to examine individual, relationship, and contextual correlates of heterosexual condom use among homeless men. Structured interviews were conducted with a predominantly African American sample of 305 men recruited from meal lines in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles. Men reported on their most recent heterosexual event involving vaginal or anal intercourse. Adjusting for demographic characteristics only, condom use was more likely when men had higher condom use self-efficacy, greater HIV knowledge, or talked to their partner about condoms prior to sex. Con…
