A healthy nineteen year-old soldier suffered a contusion of the distal interphalangeal joint of the fifth finger. A flexion contracture ensued. Histologic examination of the excised tissue revealed Dupuytren's contracture. Despite several more operations, progressive Dupuytren's contracture made it necessary to amputate the little finger at the level of the proximal phalanx. This was accepted for disability purposes as an injury acquired during military service.

OBJECTIVE: To study the response of mouse to postmortem local impact (idiomuscular contracture) with determination of the maximum time of its occurrence.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A device in the form of a metal ruler with applied horizontal metric scale was developed and manufactured in order to standardize the test for idiomuscular contracture. Data of 3480 studies performed on 870 corpses of individuals who died at the age of newborn to 97 years were analyzed.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: There has been no statistically significant difference in height of the idiomuscular tumor depending on the ag…

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous needle fasciotomy (PNF) is a minimally invasive treatment option for mild to moderate Dupuytren contractures in the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints, and the procedure requires limited resources. Multiple contractures can be treated during the same session, and the treatment is considerably easier for the patient and requires a minimum of rehabilitation compared with limited fasciectomy1.
DESCRIPTION: PNF can be performed in a regular outpatient clinic in most cases. With the patient in a reclined position, the cord of the contracted…

Proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) flexion contracture is a challenging and often frustrating problem. Treatment of PIPJ contracture begins with conservative measures. With good compliance and prolonged use, favorable results can be achieved using these modalities. For contractures that fail to respond to conservative treatment, surgical intervention can be considered. The affected structures that can be released during surgery include the accessory collateral ligaments, volar plate, checkrein ligaments, retinacular ligaments, and the flexor and extensor tendons. A stepwise approach to rele…

Congenital Volkmann ischemic contracture is a very rare condition in which a neonate presents skin, muscular and nerve lesions due to increased intracompartment pressure and subsequent ischemia, probably due to extrinsic intrauterine compression. In this age group, there are only about 50 reported cases and a specific cause is unknown. The authors describe the case of a newborn who presented with bullous and ulcerated skin lesions and nerve palsy of his forearm at birth, evolving to subcutaneous and muscular necrosis and contracture. Two surgeries were performed and the baby began a daily phys…

BACKGROUND: Retinal detachment in pediatric vasoproliferative disorders such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and familial exudative vitr … resulted in marked tractional component to retinal detachment.
CONCLUSIONS: Recognition of hyaloid contracture will aid in the proper diagnosis and surgical planning and repair of eyes with pediatric vasoproliferative disorders.
