Efficacy of midazolam in the Treatment of Acute Convulsions in Children and Its Effects on Convulsive Brain Tissue Injury.

This study focused on addressing the efficacy of midazolam in the treatment of acute convulsions in children and its effects on convulsive brain tissue injury. A total of 124 children with acute convulsions were separated into the control group and the observation group according to the random number table method. Children in the control group received intravenous injection therapy with diazepam (0.3-0.5 mg/kg); those in the observation group received midazolam buccal mucosa administration treatment (different doses for different age groups). The total effective rate of treatment and adverse r

Prolonged nonepileptic twilight state with convulsive manifestations after febrile convulsions: a clinical and electroencephalographic study.

EEGs were obtained from 14 infants during behavior clinically diagnose d as prolonged febrile seizures. The clinical manifestations during EEG recordings resembled complex partial seizures (CPS) with convulsive manifestations, but the accompanying EEG waveforms were not epileptiform. Rather, two types of slow wave activity occurred: One was continuous diffuse delta (CDD) waves; the other was diffuse rhythmic theta (DRT) waves. I have termed these clinical states "nonepileptic twilight states with convulsive manifestations" (NETC). Because the CDD and DRT activity was similar to childhood arous

Febrile convulsions followed by nonfebrile convulsions: analysis based on a maximum likelihood method and discriminant function.

Two hundred sixty-two nontreated patients with febrile convulsions only and 107 with later nonfebrile convulsions were analyzed based on a maximum likelihood method and discriminant function. The formula for discrimination is as follows: y = 2.9193 x (basic EEG abnormality at the first examination) + 2.2134 x (more than 20 minutes in duration of convulsion) + 1.7358 (fever under 38.4 degrees C before convulsion) + 1.7005 x (specific EEG abnormality at the first examination) + 1.6703 x (more than 5 recurrences) + 1.5610 x (over 4 years of age at the last convulsion) + 1.4921 x (exogenous causes

The weight of MMRV-related febrile convulsions among other clinical factors contributing to febrile convulsions in children.

BACKGROUND: It was previously demonstrated that MMRV vaccine causes a higher rate of febrile convulsions (FC) compared to the MMR vaccine. Additional risk factors for FC include age, familial tendency, day care attendance, viral diseases, complications at birth and developmental delay. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the relative and attributable risk of FC for vaccinees' age, ethnicity, low birth weight, preterm birth and MMRV vaccination in 10-24 months old children. METHODS: Data on medical history and vaccination were extracted from data warehouses of Clalit Health Services and Israel's Ministry

Scopolamine-induced convulsions in fasted mice after food intake: evaluation of the sedative effect in the suppression of convulsions.

Food intake triggers convulsions in fasted mice and rats treated with antimuscarinic drugs, scopolamine or atropine. Most of the drugs produced anticonvulsant efficacy in these convulsions have sedative effects. Thus, the present study was performed to evaluate the contribution of sedation in the suppression of convulsions by using sedative drugs chlorpromazine, morphine, amitriptyline and diphenhydramine. Mice fasted for 24h and treated with 3mg/kg scopolamine developed convulsions soon after refeeding. Treatment of chlorpromazine and morphine during food deprivation did not provide a prevent

[Management of convulsive status epilepticus in childhood].

Convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) is one of the most common pediatric emergencies. The duration of CSE is critical, whereby with increasing duration the cessation of CSE becomes more difficult or less probable and mortality as well as short and long-term complications increase exponentially. Prompt diagnostics and treatment of pediatric CSE (PCSE) are therefore essential. In contrast to adulthood, updated generally accepted guidelines for a structured approach do not yet exist. Based on current evidence the Austrian EpiCARE centers of the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical University Vi

A woman in her seventies with fever and convulsions.

BACKGROUND: Chagas encephalitis is a rare but severe manifestation of reactivation in patients with chronic Chagas disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her seventies who was immunosuppressed after a heart transplant due to Chagas disease was admitted with convulsions, headache and visual disturbances. She developed fever, confusion and repeated convulsions. Pleocytosis was found in spinal fluid. Wet-mount microscopy of spinal fluid revealed motile Trypanosoma cruzi trypomastigotes, and multiple trypomastigotes were seen on a Giemsa-stained smear, confirming reactivation of Chagas disease wi

Convulsion Treated by a Physician-Staffed Helicopter.

OBJECTIVE: There have been no reports focusing on patients with convulsion treated by a doctor helicopter (DH). We herein report the results … ff of the DH made contact with the subject. All subjects obtained a survival outcome. Regarding anticonvulsants administered, diazepam was the most frequently used followed by midazolam. The frequency of convulsion after transportation was significantly lower than that before transportation. The Glasgow Coma Scale and peripheral capillary oxygen saturation af …

[An unusual presentation of painful tic convulsive].

INTRODUCTION: The term 'painful tic convulsive' is used to describe the syndrome involving concomitant hemifacial spasm and ipsilateral trigeminal neuralgia. Vascular compression of the fifth and seventh cranial nerves is the most common cause, involving the entry and exit zone of rootlets coming from the brainstem; nevertheless, different etiologies of this syndrome has been previously reported. Treatment for this disease is based on surgical microvascular decompression of the nerve rootlets, but still a topic of debate. CASE REPORT: A 63-year-old woman with history of 14 years presenting le

Concussive convulsions: A YouTube video analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze seizure-like motor phenomena immediately occurring after concussion (concussive convulsions). METHODS: Twenty-five videos of concussive convulsions were obtained from YouTube as a result of numerous sports-related search terms. The videos were analyzed by four independent observers, documenting observations of the casualty, the head injury, motor symptoms of the concussive convulsions, the postictal period, and the outcome. RESULTS: Immediate responses included the fencing response, bear hug position, and bilateral leg extension. Fencing response was the most common. Th

Understanding the pathophysiology behind febrile convulsions.

The most common background to hyperpyrexia and convulsions is immaturity of the child's physiological reactions to infection, so an understanding of the pathophysiology of pyrexia and febrile convulsions in young children enables nurses to take appropriate action. Correct management involves prompt recognition of rising temperature, administration of antipyretic medication, use of other cooling strategies and careful monitoring. Diagnosis of the underlying cause occasionally requires laboratory investigation, if no focus for infection is found, most cases being viral.

Renal function in children with febrile convulsions.

OBJECTIVE: Febrile convulsions (FC) are the most frequent seizure disorder in children. Some studies have detected serum electrolyte disturbances in patients with FC. This study determines serum electrolytes, renal function tests, and frequency of urinary tract infection in hospitalized children with FC. MATERIALS & METHODS: In this descriptive, cross sectional study, we evaluated 291 children with FC admitted to the Neurology ward of Ali-Asghar Children's Hospital from 2008- 2013. Data was recorded on age, sex, type (simple, complex), and recurrence of seizures, family history of FC and epil
