To the Editors: Alloimmunization is triggered when an individual whose red blood cells (RBCs) are lacking particular antigens is exposed to these antigens through transfusion or pregnancy, causing the formation of immune antibodies. In addition to these exogenous exposures, underlying inflammatory or autoimmune conditions may lead to formation of unexpected antibodies. Individual factors also play a role, since some people are responders and others are non-responders. We report a case of naturally occurring alloanti-N and alloanti-S in a healthy D+ blood donor. Both antibodies were reactive ov

The bite of the brown recluse spider (Loxosceles reclusa) typically results in local, dermonecrotic skin lesions. Rarely, these bites may precipitate systemic disturbances of varying severity collectively known as systemic loxoscelism. The more severe systemic alterations attributed to the venom of this arachnid include hemolytic anemia, multiorgan failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, or even death. Coombs-positive hemolysis associated with brown recluse spider bites has rarely been documented in the literature. We report 2 cases of systemic loxoscelism in young women associated wi

Results of indirect antiglobulin test (IAT) adding polyethylene glycol (PEG) were compared with conventional IAT performed using bovine serume albumin (BSA) with the aim of prenatal protection of Rh(D) negative pregnant women. Investigation enrolled 986 samples of pregnant women sera and confirmed that the use of PEG-IAT increased the degree of detection of clinically significant antierythrocyte antibodies. Above all, form the Rhesus blood groups system (using exclusively PEG-IAT) was detected by one antibody of anti-D, anti-C, anti-e and two anti-E), while by using BSA, anti-e was not detecte

A 50-year-old man presented with pancytopenia and chronic renal impairment. He had evidence of intravascular haemolysis. The direct antiglobulin (Coomb's) test was negative. Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) was diagnosed by the Ham acid haemolysis test. There were no other clinical risk factors that could be implicated in chronic kidney disease (CKD). A renal biopsy revealed extensive haemosiderosis affecting proximal tubular cells and associated interstitial fibrosis as well as tubular atrophy. No glomerular or vascular lesions were seen. These findings strengthen the case for a cau

Dysimmune lymphadenopathies during carbamazepine treatment. A report of two cases. We report on two cases of dysimmune lymphadenopathies with histological aspect of angio immunoblastic lymphadenopathy (AIL) developing after administration of carbamazepine. Clinical manifestations consisted of fever, erythroderma, generalized pruritus, facial edema, lymphadenopathy, liver enlargement. The two patients had anemia, hypogammaglobulinemia, impaired liver function and a negative Coomb's test. Lymphocyte stimulation test with carbamazepine in vitro was positive in both cases. Lymph node biopsy disclo

S-1090, a cefmatilen hydrochloride hydrate, is being developed as a cephalosporin antibiotic for oral use. Immunogenicity, hypersensitivity-eliciting antigenicity and immunological cross-reactivity with other antibiotics were evaluated by active systemic anaphylaxis (ASA) test, passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using guinea pigs and mice/rats. In addition, in vitro direct Coombs' test was also performed to examine the possibility of hemolytic anemia in clinical use. Immunogenicity of S-1090 was not observed in guinea pigs after repeated immu

The present study describes the clinical profile and ankyrin 1 (ANK1) mutation status of a Chinese family with hereditary spherocytosis (HS). A young male patient (proband) was diagnosed with HS after presenting with anaemia and jaundice. The Coombs test was negative and spherocytes were found in peripheral blood smears. Magnetic resonance imaging showed splenomegaly and splenic iron depositions. The red blood cell osmotic fragility test was positive. The eosin-5'-maleimide binding test showed reduced mean channel fluorescence. Whole-exome sequencing revealed a novel ANK1 mutation (c.4707G>A),…

The article analyses data on the occurrence of hematological abnormalities in severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 infection. Among these hem … a, reticulocytosis, a significant decrease in haptoglobin levels, and a positive antiglobulin test (Coombs test). Given the comorbidity, the risks of adverse effects of severe coronavirus disease were high, despite this, it was possible to achieve clinical and hematological remission of autoimmune hemolytic anemia by prescribing pathogenetic therapy with anti …

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) has been rarely reported worldwide or from India as the underlying cause of anemia in malaria. We hereby present a case of complicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria with concomitant warm AIHA in a 31-year-old male. Direct Antiglobulin Test (DAT) was positive and elution studies showed pan-agglutination reaction. Clinico-hematological and serological follow-up of the patient was done post artesunate treatment until day 9. We suggest that it is important to establish the immune basis of anemia in malaria patients for guiding the treatment plan for the clinician

BACKGROUND: Use of Direct Antiglobulin test (DAT) in management of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is conflicting.
OBJECTIVE: whether strength of positive DAT predicts the need for phototherapy, duration of phototherapy and need for major interventions.
METHODS: We retrospectively collected data on all DAT positive neonates with birth gestational age ≥32 weeks over six years (2014-2019). Data regarding blood group, DAT and clinical details were obtained from a hospital database. We also collected data on serial hemoglobin and other relevant laboratory parameters. We also collected data on infant

A 61-year old female with dengue haemorrhagic fever developed anaemia and rising transaminase levels on the 6th day of illness. She was found to have haemolysis with a negative direct antiglobulin test (DAT), and no red cell fragmentation. She recovered with supportive care. Haemolysis with associated Haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and cold Auto-immune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) is reported previously; DAT negative haemolytic anaemia associated with dengue fever has not. This case suggests a need for further studies on other immune mechanisms tha

We measured the quantity of IgG bound to platelets (IgGP) by the antiglobulin consumption test (Dixon technic). In controls, the IgG level did not exceed 10 X 10(-15) g for one platelet. The amount of IgGP was often incraeased (more than 10 X 10(-l5) g) in some autoimmune diseases as lupus erythematosus, chronic lymphocytic leukemia and chronic active hepatitis. Among 26 patients presenting an idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) with a low number of platelets, 21 (77%) had a high titer of IgGP. In 6 ITP in remission, the IgGP titer was normal. After a review of the different technics det
