The influence of dolphin group coordination on cooperative foraging with humans.

Social foraging is a collective solution to the challenge of catching prey. A remarkable example involving different predator species with complementary hunting skills is Lahille's bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus gephyreus foraging with net-casting human fishers to catch migratory mullet, Mugil liza. It remains unknown, however, to what extent dolphins coordinate their own actions when foraging with humans, and how intraspecific coordination impacts interspecific foraging success. Using drone-based tracking, we quantified dolphin group surfacing behaviors (diving synchrony, proximity,

Substance use, mental health problems, and behavior at risk for HIV: evidence from CJDATS.

This study examined the relationships between substance abuse, mental health problems and HIV risk behavior in offenders discharged from prison and referred to substance abuse treatment programs. Data from 34 sites (n = 1,358) in a federally-funded cooperative agreement, the Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies (CJDATS), were analyzed. Among parolees referred to substance abuse treatment, self reports for the six-month period before the arrest resulting in their incarceration revealed frequent problems with both substance use and mental health. HIV risk behavior was operationalized as

Relationship Between Perspective-Taking, Boundary-Crossing Experiences, and Collaborative Practice in Discharge Planning Among Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

AIM: Effective discharge planning requires ward nurses to understand the circumstances of receiving facilities. Perspective-taking-the active cognitive process of imagining another party's situation-may play a central role in promoting interfacility collaboration. This study examined a theoretical process model that positions perspective-taking, nurses' boundary-crossing experiences, and their collaborative practice in discharge planning. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with acute care nurses in Japan in 2021. Perspective-taking and collaborative practice in discharge p

Promoting Prison Reform through Collaborative Research: A Case Study in Chile.

Prison systems in Latin America currently present various problems that include severe overcrowding, high levels of violence, scarce access to reintegration programs, and high recidivism, among others. In this precarious context, the effective reintegration of incarcerated people becomes very problematic and unlikely since, upon leaving prison, people face various barriers that are combined with a series of accumulated disadvantages that were amplified by the experience of incarceration. However, a somewhat forgotten prerequisite for effective reintegration processes is the development of evid

Industry-Academic Collaboration in Nuclear Medicine: Proceedings from the 2024 CMIIT Industry Partners Circle.

Advancing and streamlining the development pipeline and translation of theranostic radiopharmaceuticals for application in nuclear medicine necessitates continued cross-sector collaboration among key stakeholders from the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), industry partners, and academics to ensure continued growth and innovation and clinical translation. One mechanism the SNMMI has for such dialogue is its biennial Industry Partners Circle (IPC). After the success of prior IPCs, the Center for Molecular Imaging, Innovation, and Translation (CMIIT) hosted the latest IPC

Why patient organizations are important to improve care for people with Lynch syndrome.

Improving health care requires patient involvement. For people with Lynch syndrome, general and specific areas can be identified in which it is important for health care professionals to collaborate with patients to improve care. This collaboration is mutually beneficial; better care for the patients, reduction of work load and higher chance of funding of research proposals for health care professionals. Patient organizations are comprised of patients that are often more educated and motivated to participate in discussions and workshops. In addition, patient organizations have access to a netw

Opinion: No Longer Children, Not Quite Typical Adults-Building a Unified, Collaborative Model of Perioperative Care for Patients With Adult Congenital Heart Disease.

Advances in congenital heart disease care have resulted in a rapidly expanding population of adolescents and adults with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) who increasingly present for noncardiac surgery. These patients often possess complex physiology that does not align neatly with traditional pediatric or adult perioperative frameworks, creating challenges in care continuity, risk stratification, and perioperative planning. Although guidelines recommend involvement of anesthesiologists with ACHD expertise for higher-risk patients, access to specialized centers and dual-trained providers

Research on the Improvement Path of Human-AI Collaborative Consultation Effectiveness From the Perspective of Information Ecology: Configurational Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Enhancing the effectiveness of human-AI collaborative consultation in online health communities (OHCs) constitutes a core requirement for optimizing the allocation of medical resources and promoting the sustainable development of medical services. Nevertheless, the pathways to improving such effectiveness remain insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to conduct an in-depth exploration of the multiple factors influencing the effectiveness of human-AI collaborative consultation in OHCs and to assess the causal relationships among these factors, thereby providing a th

[It's worth the effort: A partnership that sheds light on workplace integration of people living with a personality disorder].

Although cross-sectoral collaboration is valued and recognized as essential for improving population health, putting it into practice remains a challenge. In this educational organizational case study, we present and highlight a recent partnership between a clinic specializing in the treatment of personality disorders (affiliated with the public health care system) and an employability organization (affiliated with the community sector) as part of the implementation of the program called Borderline Intervention for Work Integration (BIWI), an intervention designed to support work reintegration

Unscripted resilience: Improv as a training tool for business continuity and emergency management leaders.

Effective leadership training is crucial for fostering organisational resilience and ensuring community safety in the dynamic fields of emergency management and business continuity. Traditional training methods often fail to develop the adaptability and quick thinking necessary for crises. This paper explores the innovative use of improvisational (improv) techniques as a potent training tool for developing critical leadership skills. Improv exercises enhance adaptability, quick decision making and clear communication, preparing leaders to handle crises confidently and swiftly. Furthermore, the

Evolutionary dynamics in state-feedback public goods games with peer punishment.

Public goods game serves as a valuable paradigm for studying the challenges of collective cooperation in human and natural societies. Peer punishment is often considered an effective incentive for promoting cooperation in such contexts. However, previous related studies have mostly ignored the positive feedback effect of collective contributions on individual payoffs. In this work, we explore global and local state-feedback, where the multiplication factor is positively correlated with the frequency of contributors in the entire population or within the game group, respectively. By using repli

Replicator dynamics of public goods games with global exclusion.

Studies to date on the role of social exclusion in public cooperation have mainly focused on the peer or pool sanctioning types of excluding free-riders from the share of common goods. However, the exclusive behaviors are not necessarily performed by individuals or local organizations but may rather be implemented by a centralized enforcement institution at a global scale. Besides, previous modeling methods of either peer or pool exclusion often presuppose some particular forms of feedback between the individual or collective efforts and the efficiency of social exclusion and, therefore, canno

Super-rational aspiration induced strategy updating helps resolve the tragedy of the commons in a cooperation system with exit rights.

Avoiding the tragedy of the commons requires altruists to incur some losses to benefit the group. Although specific rules and self-enforcing agreements could help maintain the cooperation system stable, the costly recognition and free-rider problem are still questioned these two cooperation maintenance mechanisms. We here considered the situation of both exit costs and exit benefits in the asymmetric prisoner's dilemma game and introduced a super-rational aspiration induced strategy updating, where players adjust strategies in line with their payoffs and aspirations. If their payoffs reach or

Governance of risky public goods under graduated punishment.

Ensuring global cooperation often poses governance problems shadowed by the tragedy of the commons, as wrong-doers enjoy the benefits set up by right-doers at no cost. Institutional punishment of wrong-doers is well-known to curtail their impetus as free-riders. However, institutions often have limited scope in imposing sanctions, more so when these are strict and potentially viewed as disproportionate. Inspired by the design principles proposed by the late Nobel Prize Elinor Ostrom, here we study the evolution and impact of a new form of institutional sanctioning, where punishment is graduate

Caring is complex: And it always has been.

Einstein once said, "Everything must be made as simple as possible, but not one bit simpler." If the health care system continues to value and push oversimplified solutions to complex problems, we sacrifice context. We lose connection to the very system we seek to influence. We put at risk the very value Collaborative Family Healthcare Association (CFHA) was founded on-relationship. As CFHA celebrated its 20th annual conference as a change organization, we came together in Rochester, NY to reflect on two decades of work, innovation, and, above all, relationships-relationships with each other,

Antisocial pool rewarding does not deter public cooperation.

Rewarding cooperation is in many ways expected behaviour from social players. However, strategies that promote antisocial behaviour are also surprisingly common, not just in human societies, but also among eusocial insects and bacteria. Examples include sanctioning of individuals who behave prosocially, or rewarding of free-riders who do not contribute to collective enterprises. We therefore study the public goods game with antisocial and prosocial pool rewarding in order to determine the potential negative consequences on the effectiveness of positive incentives to promote cooperation.
