Coral reefs are threatened worldwide from unprecedented increases in ocean temperatures, resulting in corals gradually living closer to their maximum thermal threshold. With ocean temperatures expected to warm up to 3 °C by 2100, understanding the effects of chronic elevated baseline temperature is important in determining the thermal physiological limits of corals and developing realistic restoration strategies to ensure the future of coral reefs. Here, we tested the effects of 26 weeks (i.e., six months) of elevated temperatures of + 2.5 °C (27.5 °C) and + 5 °C (30 °C) above a baseline of 25

Corals in the genus Acropora generate much of the structural complexity upon which coral reefs depend, but they are susceptible to damage from toxic seaweeds. Acropora nasuta minimizes this damage by chemically cuing symbiotic goby fishes (Gobiodon histrio or Paragobiodon echinocephalus) to remove the toxic seaweed Chlorodesmis fastigiata. Within minutes of seaweed contact, or contact from only seaweed chemical extract, the coral releases an odor that recruits gobies to trim the seaweed and dramatically reduce coral damage that would otherwise occur. In turn, chemically defended gobies become

Marine litter (ML), predominantly plastic, threatens oceanic biodiversity and ecosystem functioning globally. However, limited knowledge exists about its impact on India's coastal areas, particularly the Lakshadweep Islands, the nation's sole coral atolls. Within this frame of reference, the present study comprehensively investigated the distribution, abundance, typology, and ecological risks associated with ML across 28 beaches and three lagoon reef stations on Kavaratti Island. A total of 32,710 litter items, divided into 11 categories, were found with an average litter density of 0.82 ± 0.8

Humphead wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) is an apex predator from coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. A food surveillance project using a validated mouse bioassay revealed the presence of ciguatoxins in significantly greater amounts in its flesh than in groupers and other coral reef fishes commonly available in Hong Kong wholesale market. Humphead wrasse has long been known to cause ciguatera, but there was a lack of clinical reports. A 45-year-old woman developed ciguatera after eating humphead wrasse. She required ICU care and infusions of intravenous fluids and dopamine for management of s

Symbiodiniaceae are crucial dinoflagellate symbionts for corals. They are affected by climate change-induced temperature rises that lead to coral bleaching, impacting coral reefs' health. Cryopreservation offers a solution to ensuring long-term storage of this species, preserving genetic diversity and viability. However, cryoinjury's impacts on glycan, a class of biomolecules with diverse biological roles including the initiation of coral-Symbiodiniaceae symbiosis, remain unknown. Thus, we examined the glycan profile of Breviolum psygmophilum cells cultured for varied periods post-thaw. The ce

Coral reefs face accelerating threats from climate-induced bleaching events, underscoring the need for scalable and automated health monitoring tools. This paper presents a comprehensive deep learning framework integrating object detection and image classification with a rigorously evaluated preprocessing pipeline for automated coral health assessment. Building on the custom annotated coral bleaching dataset introduced in Weraikat et al. [1], comprising 2,640 underwater coral images, four preprocessing strategies, RGB normalization, HSV conversion, histogram equalization, and color jittering,

Ciguatera Fish Poisoning (CFP), a significant public health problem in the Pacific, is intrinsically linked to the health of coral reef ecosystems. Incidence data on CFP could therefore be used, in theory, as indicators of disruption to coral reefs. Some disruptions, such as increasing sea surface temperatures, result from global environmental change--therefore suggesting that CFP is likely to become an increasing public health problem in the region. The proactive management of increasing numbers of cases will depend on an understanding of the ecology of the disease, sound health surveillance

Coral health is under threat throughout the world due to regional and global stressors. White plague disease (WP) is one of the most important threats affecting the major reef builder of the Abrolhos Bank in Brazil, the endemic coral Mussismilia braziliensis. We performed a metagenomic analysis of healthy and WP-affected M. braziliensis in order to determine the types of microbes associated with this coral species. We also optimized a protocol for DNA extraction from coral tissues. Our taxonomic analysis revealed Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria, and Actinomycetes as th

Anthropogenic climate change has contributed to the accelerating loss of coral reefs worldwide. This crisis has led to a myriad of studies aimed at understanding the basis of coral resilience to support reef conservation. Here, we compare physiological, proteomic, and metabolomic responses to acute thermal stress to identify both diverged and conserved stress response strategies and molecular markers of bleaching susceptibility in three different coral species. We find species-specific responses with the thermally sensitive Acropora hyacinthus exhibiting a rapid decline in endosymbiont physiol

Corals are sensitive to minute changes in their environments, and their continued existence is substantially threatened by the increasing number of destructive anthropogenic activities and unprecedented rates of climate change. Although cryopreservation has been successfully to preserve mammalian gametes for decades, coral cryopreservation was attempted for the first time less than 15 years ago, and freezing protocols exist for only a handful of coral species. The present study developed a cryopreservation protocol for the sperm of the common Indo-Pacific reef-builder Acropora humilis. Colonie

Earth's earliest known framework reef, ~1500-million-year-old Yesanpo Mound in the Wumishan Formation, North China, consists of columns and cones built by innumerable conjoined originally aragonitic ministromatolites, each ≤ 2 cm wide. The Mound contains numerous irregular, decimetric, cavities. These are now filled with carbonate mud, giant ooids, and originally aragonitic marine cement. The role of ministromatolites in constructing this modular framework very broadly resembles that of polyps in present-day scleractinian coral colonies. Yesanpo Mound preserves geochemical signatures and trace

Biofouling of different artificial substrates was studied to determine the differences in biofouling assemblages among different substrates. However, studies on biofouling on natural substrates like electrolytic carbonated ones are lacking. These substrates have a great potential for coral reef restoration in tropical areas and for biofilter construction. Thus, this study was developed to examine the colonization of sessile macrofouling in the port of Alicante (SE Spain, Western Mediterranean) on two types of substrates: electrolytic carbonated and bare steel (as control) over three months of

Land-based inputs, such as runoff, rivers, and submarine groundwater, can alter biologic processes on coral reefs. While the abiotic factors associated with land-based inputs have strong effects on corals, corals are also affected by biotic interactions, including other neighboring corals. The biologic responses of corals to changing environmental conditions and their neighbors are likely interactive; however, few studies address both biotic and abiotic interactions in concert. In a manipulative field experiment, we tested how the natural environmental gradient created by submarine groundwater

Titan triggerfish (Balistoides viridescens) are among the most territorial reef fishes, known for aggressively defending nests from intruders. In the Maldives' Fuvahmulah atoll, where tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) aggregate in high numbers year-round, we opportunistically documented 10 interactions between these species from February to August 2024 during daily diving operations. Video footage from experienced divers was analyzed to identify and categorize aggressive behaviors, defined as bites (rapid, forceful closure of the jaws on the shark's body) and chases (short pursuits following an

Deep-water coral reefs are found worldwide and harbor biodiversity levels that are comparable to their shallow-water counterparts. However, the genetic diversity and population structure of deep-water species remain poorly explored, and historical taxonomical issues still need to be resolved. Here we used microsatellite markers as well as ultraconserved elements (UCE) and exons to shed light on the population structure, genetic diversity, and phylogenetic position of the genus Madrepora, which contains M. oculata, one of the most widespread scleractinian species. Population structure of 107 sa

Aggregated larval co-settlement has been documented in myriad marine invertebrate taxa, shaping adult population structures. Still, kinship settlement patterns in brooding corals have not been studied in detail, especially under scenarios of enhanced larval assemblies. Employing two sets of ex-situ experiments, planulae staining for kinship resolution and a computer random settlement simulation, we show that larval settlement of the coral Stylophora pistillata, a brooding species in the Gulf of Aqaba/Eilat, is mostly affected by the number of larval donors, and that larvae tend to aggregate (u

Herbivorous fishes form a keystone component of reef ecosystems, yet the functional mechanisms underlying their feeding performance are poorly understood. In water, gravity is counter-balanced by buoyancy, hence fish are recoiled backwards after every bite they take from the substrate. To overcome this recoil and maintain contact with the algae covered substrate, fish need to generate thrust while feeding. However, the locomotory performance of reef herbivores in the context of feeding has hitherto been ignored. We used a three-dimensional high-speed video system to track mouth and body kinema

Climate change is causing shifts in the spatial distribution of species and a reshuffling of the composition of multiple community types. On coral reefs, deep water can act as both refuges and refugia for corals from the combined negative effects of heat and light stress. Phenotypically plastic generalists that can tolerate both low and high light environments could be disproportionately important on future reefs, persisting in refugia and colonizing vacant shallow reefs. We performed a common garden experiment to investigate the effect of light on three different wild-collected genotypes of t

Diving-related activities may constitute a major threat to coral reefs. This study aimed to quantify the impact of diving in Hong Kong on hard corals and understand how socio-economic characteristics and experience level of divers influence diver-inflicted damage. We recorded and analysed the underwater behaviour of 81 recreational divers. On average, a diver was in contact with marine biota 14.7 times with about 40% of contacts involved corals and 38% were damaging contacts with corals or other biota in a single dive. The most harm-inflicting groups included inexperienced and camera-carrying

Oil pollution remains a prominent local hazard to coral reefs, but the sensitivity of some coral life stages to oil exposure remains unstudied. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), ubiquitous on coral reefs, may significantly increase oil toxicity towards these critical habitat-forming taxa. Here we present the first data on the sensitivity of two distinct post-settlement life stages of the model coral species Acropora millepora to a heavy fuel oil (HFO) water accommodated fraction (WAF) in the absence and presence of UVR. Assessment of lethal and sublethal endpoints indicates that both 1-
