Agenesis of the corpus callosum: neonatal sonographic detection.

CONTEXT: Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a rare congenital midline brain abnormality that can disrupt normal cognitive progression. Primary complete agenesis usually occurs earlier in embryologic development, while partial agenesis occurs in later gestation. Agenesis of the corpus callosum has an estimated incidence ranging from 0.03% to 0.7% in the general population and is considered to be a component of as many as 50 to 200 different syndromes. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to summarize recent literature pertaining to the diagnosis of agenesis of the corpus callosum, includi

Comprehension of humor in primary agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) can, in some cases, perform normally on standardized intelligence tests. Nevertheless, recent studies suggest that individuals with ACC and normal IQ scores have deficits in domains of fluid and social intelligence. Anecdotal reports from families suggest diminished appreciation of the subtleties of social interactions, and deficits in the comprehension of jokes and stories. In this research, both the cartoon and narrative joke subtests of a humor test (developed by Brownell et al. [Brownell, H., Michel, D., Powelson, J., & Gardner, H. (19

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is associated with feeding difficulties.

Our objective was to characterize the common occurrence of feeding and swallowing disorders noticed by our speech therapy department among patients with agenesis of the corpus callosum. All patients with suspected or presumed agenesis of the corpus callosum undergoing therapy for feeding and/or swallowing disorders, including oral and/or pharyngeal dysphagia and oral-sensory disorder, were identified. Their brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies and charts were reviewed in detail. Seven patients with striking oral-motor and oral-sensory disorder met the criteria for agenesis of the cor

Agenesis of corpus callosum: prenatal diagnosis and prognosis.

INTRODUCTION: Agenesis of corpus callosum (ACC) is commonly diagnosed prenatally. When isolated, it appears to carry a good prognosis but studies are often retrospective and follow-up short. We report a prospective study of 17 children (11 boys, 6 girls) with prenatally diagnosed isolated ACC. METHODS: Neuropsychological evaluation was performed each year and results at the ages of 2, 4, and 6 years were compared. RESULTS: Febrile seizures occurred in 3 patients. Median intellectual quotient (IQ) was within the normal range (80-109) and nonrelated to partial or complete ACC, sex, or febrile

Hypoplasia of the corpus callosum and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Abnormalities in the corpus callosum, which connects the cerebral hemispheres, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of obsessive-compulsive disorder. This is a report of two cases of obsessive-compulsive disorder associated with hypoplasia of the corpus callosum. These data provide further support for corpus callosum-mediated dysfunction in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Classification of acquired lesions of the corpus callosum with MRI.

MRI has facilitated diagnostic assessment of the corpus callosum. Diagnostic classification of solitary or multiple lesions of the corpus callosum has not attracted much attention, although signal abnormalities are not uncommon. Our aim was to identify characteristic imaging features of lesions frequently encountered in practice. We reviewed the case histories of 59 patients with lesions shown on MRI. The nature of the lesions was based on clinical features and/or long term follow-up (ischaemic 20, Virchow-Robin spaces 3, diffuse axonal injury 7, multiple sclerosis 11, hydrocephalus 5, acute d

Agenesis of corpus callosum: clinical description and etiology.

In 135 children (aged 3 months to 15 years) with structural defects of the central nervous system found on magnetic resonance imaging, agenesis of the corpus callosum was evident in 7. The etiology of agenesis of the corpus callosum has been established in four children: partial trisomy of chromosome 13, partial duplication of the long arm of chromosome 10, Aicardi's syndrome, and intracranial bleeding during the fetal period as a result of injury. Agenesis of the corpus callosum coexisted with a Dandy-Walker malformation in one other patient, which suggests a genetic etiology. In spite of the

Interhemispheric neural summation in the absence of the corpus callosum.

One subject with full forebrain commissurotomy (L.B.), two with callosotomy (J.W. and M.E.), one with callosal agenesis (R.B.) and 10 normal subjects performed a simple reaction time task in which visual stimuli were either presented singly in one or other visual field, or in both visual fields simultaneously. Reaction times were faster to double stimuli than to single ones, but in the normal subjects this 'redundancy gain' did not exceed that predicted by probability summation (the horse-race model). In the four subjects lacking the corpus callosum, the gain did exceed that predicted by proba

Prenatal MR diagnosis of a thick corpus callosum.

Fetal sonography revealed cerebral, facial, and genitourinary abnormalities, prompting MR at 33 weeks' gestational age. Cerebral MR confirmed a thickened corpus callosum and showed open sylvian fissures, abnormal gyri in the frontal lobes, and presumed neuronal heterotopias. An abortion was performed at 34 weeks' gestational age, and pathologic findings corresponded well to the MR manifestations.

Evidence for atrophy of the corpus callosum in Alzheimer's disease.

Patients with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) have more white matter changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) than controls. To test the hypothesis that AD patients might have also atrophy of the corpus callosum (CC), we compared the CC thickness on MRI from 20 AD patients and 21 controls. We found a significant reduction in the CC thickness in AD compared with age-matched controls (p < 0.01). We demonstrated that atrophy of the CC depends mainly on the diagnosis of senile dementia of the Alzheimer type and at a lower degree on the diagnosis of presenile AD but neither on age nor on ven

[Familial agenesis of the corpus callosum: a new form].

BACKGROUND. Agenesis of the corpus callosum is generally associated with other developmental defects of the cerebrum. Some familial cases have been reported. CASES REPORTS Case n. 1. A 6 year-old girl was examined because of developmental retardation, first noted at the age of 3 months. There was no consanguinity but 2 girls, cousins of the father, died at 17 and 18 years with the same clinical presentation. Our patient had seizures at 4 years. At examination, she had microcephaly, dilated unreactive pupils, and generalized hypotonia. Her IQ was 15. Funduscopic examination showed optic atrophy

Genitourinary malformations associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is an infrequent congenital anomaly that occurs in partial or complete forms, and is frequently associated with other craniofacial and skeletal abnormalities. An increased association with genitourinary abnormalities has not been previously defined. We reviewed the records of 22 boys and 11 girls with agenesis of the corpus callosum. Of the patients 18 had complete radiological or necroscopic evaluation and 15 had physical examinations as the sole means of evaluation. Renal anomalies were the most frequent genitourinary abnormalities identified in these children

Clinical and morphometric analysis of the hypoplastic corpus callosum.

A total of 307 children were evaluated over a 3-year period in our neurogenetics clinic. Review of their medical records demonstrated 26 patients with diagnoses of anomalies of the corpus callosum. Morphometric analysis was performed on those 23 patients qualitatively assessed as having a hypoplastic (small, but morphologically intact) corpus callosum. Morphometric data were compared with clinical correlates for each patient. From these data, we conclude that the hypoplastic corpus callosum is not a normal variant of development but rather an indicator of a more fundamental abnormality of cere

Polyasplenia, caudal deficiency, and agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Fullana et al. [Am J Med Genet (suppl. 2): 23-29, 1986] reported on 2 sibs with an autosomal recessive syndrome of caudal deficiency and polyasplenia anomalies. We report on a similar patient in which agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) was also found. Such an association has not been reported previously. This finding of ACC is to be interpreted as another midline anomaly rather than as a causally independent malformation.

Interhemispheric cysts in association with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Two cases of complete agenesis of the corpus callosum each with large interhemispheric cysts are presented. The first case is an adult patient with chronic renal failure secondary to adult polycystic renal disease who was neurologically asymptomatic until she had a seizure during hemodialysis. The second case is an infant, who was diagnosed in utero as hydrocephalic, with severe mental and motor retardation and intractable seizures. The clinicopathologic findings in the two cases are presented, along with a discussion of the possible etiologies and clinical significance.

Ullrich-Turner syndrome with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

We report on a 19-year-old woman with 45,X Ullrich-Turner syndrome who was severely mentally retarded and had hypotonia. Computer tomography (CT) scan showed agenesis of the corpus callosum. There have been few reports of gross developmental central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities in Ullrich-Turner syndrome. Only one case of Ullrich-Turner syndrome with agenesis of the corpus callosum has been reported. The high prenatal lethality of Ullrich-Turner syndrome may mask a CNS abnormality.
