Increased corticosterone in peripubertal rats leads to long-lasting alterations in social exploration and aggression.

Stress during childhood and adolescence enhances the risk of psychopathology later in life. We have previously shown that subjecting male rats to stress during the peripubertal period induces long-lasting effects on emotion and social behaviors. As corticosterone is increased by stress and known to exert important programming effects, we reasoned that increasing corticosterone might mimic the effects of peripubertal stress. To this end, we injected corticosterone (5 mg/kg) on 7 scattered days during the peripuberty period (P28-P30, P34, P36, P40, and P42), following the same experimental sched

The effect of exogenous corticosterone on West Nile virus infection in Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis).

The relationship between stress and disease is thought to be unambiguous: chronic stress induces immunosuppression, which likely increases the risk of infection. However, this link has not been firmly established in wild animals, particularly whether stress hormones affect host responses to zoonotic pathogens, which can be transmitted to domesticated animal, wildlife and human populations. Due to the dynamic effects of stress hormones on immune functions, stress hormones may make hosts better or poorer amplifying hosts for a pathogen contingent on context and the host species evaluated. The effect of centrally administered ghrelin on pituitary ACTH cells and circulating ACTH and corticosterone in rats.

Ghrelin is a brain-gut peptide known for its growth hormone (GH)-releasing and appetite-inducing activities. This natural GH secretagogue (GHS) was originally purified from rat stomach, but it is expressed widely in different tissues where it may have endocrine and paracrine effects. The central effects of ghrelin on adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) cells, ACTH release and subsequent corticosterone release from adrenal glands remains to be clarified. The aim of this study was to specifically determine the morphological features of ACTH-producing pituicytes and blood concentration of ACTH and

Endotoxin-induced hypoxic-ischemic tolerance is mediated by up-regulation of corticosterone in neonatal rat.

Previous studies suggest that the endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) may have dual effects on brain damage induced by hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in 7-d-old rats, depending on the exposure paradigm. Although a 4-h interval between LPS administration and HI results in sensitization to HI brain injury, tolerance is observed when LPS is administered 24 h before HI. Our hypothesis is that endogenous corticosteroids are important in acquiring tolerance to HI. Neonatal rats received a single injection of LPS (1.0 mg/kg) either 4 h or 24 h before HI, or two LPS injections (4 h and 24 h) before HI. Increase

Disruption of mineralocorticoid receptor function increases corticosterone responding to a mild, but not moderate, psychological stressor.

Glucocorticoid negative feedback regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is mediated by corticosteroid receptors. It is widely thought that during stress, glucocorticoid receptors (GR) are essential for this negative feedback. In contrast, mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) are associated with HPA axis regulation in basal, nonstress conditions. Notions about the relative roles of MR and GR for HPA axis regulation during stressor challenge may not be complete. Recent work in our laboratory suggests that previous estimates of MR occupancy at resting plasma levels of corticoster

Effect of neonatal handling and sex on basal and chronic stress-induced corticosterone and leptin secretion.

Neonatal handling is an experimental paradigm for early experiences. It affects the programming of hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function, known to be sexually dimorphic. Recently leptin, a hormone related to energy balance and secreted mainly by adipocytes, has been implicated in the stress response. We thus determined the effect of neonatal handling on plasma concentrations of corticosterone and leptin of male and female rats under basal conditions and after two consecutive chronic stressors: chronic forced swimming stress and chronic restraint. Handling resulted in lower basal co

Conditioned release of corticosterone by contextual stimuli associated with cocaine is mediated by corticotropin-releasing factor.

Elevated blood concentrations of corticosterone (CORT), an adrenal steroid associated with stress responses, is one of the endocrine correlates of cocaine treatment. Experiment 1 confirmed and extended previous findings that chronic cocaine treatment does not alter corticosteroid responses to cocaine. In Experiment 2, conditioned endocrine effects of cocaine were examined in three groups of rats after 7 consecutive days of treatment. Cocaine-induced conditioning was achieved using a simple contextual design. In group 1 (paired), rats were injected with cocaine (30 mg/kg), then immediately plac

Blockade of corticosterone synthesis reduces serotonin turnover in the dorsal hippocampus of the rat as measured by microdialysis.

The influence of plasma corticosterone concentration on serotonin (5-HT) turnover in the dorsal hippocampus was investigated. The experiments were performed in freely moving male Wistar rats in their home cage. Blood samples were taken via a permanent jugular vein catheter to determine plasma corticosterone levels. Extracellular levels of 5-HT and its metabolite 5-hydroxy-indole acetic acid (5-HIAA) were measured using in vivo microdialysis. The rats received an intravenous (i.v.) infusion of the steroid synthesis-inhibitor metyrapone (150 mg/kg/ml) in order to manipulate circulating corticost

The effect of glucocorticoids on osteoblast function. The effect of corticosterone on osteoblast expression of beta 1 integrins.

Prolonged treatment with glucocorticoids is known to produce osteoporosis, which is characterized by a decrease in bone mass. Therefore, we studied the effect of glucocorticoids on the formation of bone and on the expression of beta 1 integrins in a mineralizing organ culture of fetal rat parietal bone. Integrins are a family of integral membrane glycoproteins that mediate the adhesion of cells to extracellular matrix macromolecules and affect the growth and differentiation of cells. In situ hybridization with a 32P-labeled beta 1 integrin cDNA probe was performed on parietal bone, treated wit

Effect of sodium deprivation on plasma and adrenal concentrations of aldosterone and corticosterone in the Brattleboro homozygous rat.

Despite the great impairment in water balance occurring in the Brattleboro rat, homozygous for diabetes insipidus and lacking hypothalamic arginine-vasopressin, fed a normal sodium diet, the metabolic effects of a chronic sodium deprivation were similar in the Brattleboro rat and in the Long-Evans rat used as control. Concomitantly, whilst the plasma and adrenal concentrations of aldosterone were two fold lower in the Brattleboro rat than in the Long-Evans rat fed a normal diet, after ten days of sodium restriction they became similar in the two groups of rats; sodium deprivation greatly incre

Contrasting effects of nitrofurans on plasma corticosterone in chickens following administration as a bolus or diet additive.

Administration of furazolidone as a bolus dose (8-500 mg/kg), produced a decrease in plasma corticosterone in chickens. In contrast, addition of furazolidone or furaltadone to the diet (0.04% or above, 10 days), increased plasma corticosterone. Pre-treatment with a 200-mg/kg bolus of furazolidone or furaltadone did not affect pentobarbitone anaesthesia time in the birds. In chickens pre-treated with a nitrofuran in the diet, however, pentobarbitone anaesthesia time was significantly less than that in controls. Furaltadone in the diet, produced significant increases in the amount of cytochrome

Effects of ethanol on plasma corticosterone and rectal temperature modification by U50488H and WIN 44441-3.

Endogenous opiates are believed to subserve various behaviors and physiological functions. We have examined the effect of U50488H (0-12 mg/kg), a kappa agonist, and WIN 44441-3 (0-4.0 mg/kg), a kappa antagonist, on ethanol (ET)-induced changes in rectal temperature and in plasma corticosterone (CS) levels in rats. The 12 mg/kg dose of U50488H produced marked hypothermia, the other doses either produced hyperthermia comparable to that seen in control animals, or had no effect. The 0.5 mg/kg of WIN44441-3 had a small hypothermic effect while the 4.0 mg/kg produced hyperthermia. U50488H potentiat

Adaptation of plasma catecholamine and corticosterone responses to short-term repeated noise stress in rats.

Plasma noradrenaline (NA), adrenaline (A) and corticosterone (CS) concentrations were determined in blood frequently sampled via a cardiac catheter from freely moving rats exposed to three successive trials of white-noise stimulation (10 min, 100 dBA) with an intertrial interval of 30 min. During the sampling period, behavioral activities of the rats were recorded. It was demonstrated that the first exposure to noise induced a specific temporal pattern of neuroendocrine changes: Plasma A and NA contents increased rapidly and peaked early after stimulus onset but their peak-latencies were diffe

Reproductive cycle, thyroxine and corticosterone in females of the giant swamp frog Dicroglossus occipitalis at the equator.

Females of the giant swamp frog Dicroglossus occipitalis were captured in the tributaries of the Zaïre River near Kisangani, a town situated close to the equator (00 degree 31' N) with virtually constant conditions as to photoperiod, temperature, precipitation, and relative humidity. An annual variation in the reproductive capacity of this species could be demonstrated. A reproductive quiescence with a low gonadal somatic index (GSI), undeveloped eggs, and minimal plasma concentrations of estradiol-17 beta (E2) and progesterone (P4) was found from October to January. E2 and P4 and thyroxine (T

Release of aldosterone and corticosterone from the adrenal cortex of the Brattleboro rat in response to administration of ACTH.

The time-course and dose-response of the in-vivo secretion of aldosterone and corticosterone after administration of ACTH(1-24) were measured in adrenal venous blood from female Brattleboro rats, homozygous for hypothalamic diabetes insipidus and lacking arginine vasopressin (AVP). Female Long-Evans rats were used as controls. All animals were pretreated with dexamethasone and anaesthetized with pentobarbital. Basal secretions of aldosterone and corticosterone were four- to sixfold lower in Brattleboro than in Long-Evans rats. Administration of ACTH consistently increased the secretion of aldo

Two adult familial cases of selective hypoaldosteronism due to insufficiency of conversion of corticosterone to aldosterone.

A 57-year-old woman (case 1) and her daughter aged 29 (case 2) with hyperkalemia exhibited subnormal plasma aldosterone (ALD) in the face of elevated plasma renin activity. Their physical findings were normal. Their arterial blood gas analysis showed that metabolic acidosis and renal function of these cases were slightly impaired. Urinary 17-OHCS and 17-KS excretions in these cases were normal. Baseline levels of corticosterone (B) and 18-hydroxycorticosterone (18-OH-B) were clearly elevated. Plasma deoxycorticosterone (DOC), B and 18-OH-B as well as cortisol remarkable increased after ACTH in

Possible zeitgebers for external entrainment of the circadian rhythm of plasma corticosterone in blind infantile rats.

1. The phase angle of circadian rhythm of plasma corticosterone in individual blind pups was followed in order to find out an effective zeitgeber(s) during the post-natal development. 2. The retinal light pathway before the opening of eyes was not essential for the entrainment of pups' rhythm to the environmental light-dark (LD) cycle. 3. In blinded pups whose eyes were enucleated on the day of birth, no evidence was obtained for effective extra-retinal pathways for photic inputs. 4. Free-running circadian hormone rhythm of blind pups was not entrained by 'social contact' with other sighted pu
