Combined middle meningeal artery embolisation and subdural evacuation port system drainage for chronic subdural haematoma: a systematic review, single-arm meta-analysis, meta-regression, and cost-benefit analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic subdural haematoma (cSDH) is an increasingly prevalent condition in older, anticoagulated, and medically frail patients, in whom recurrence and perioperative risk remain substantial despite standard surgical evacuation. Growing recognition of cSDH as an angiogenic, inflammatory disorder has prompted interest in minimally invasive strategies that combine mechanical decompression with targeted modulation of the underlying vascular pathology. This study aimed to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and health-economic profile of combined middle meningeal artery embolisation and

The effects of self-efficacy in bifurcating the relationship of perceived benefit and cost with condom use among adolescents: A cusp catastrophe modeling analysis.

This study tested the complex relationship among the perceived benefit from and cost of condom use, self-efficacy and condom use among adolescents as a nonlinear dynamic process. Participants were 12th graders in public Bahamian high schools who reported having had sex and frequency of condom use. Results revealed that the perceived benefit and perceived cost as asymmetry variables were significantly associated with condom use (p < 0.001) after controlling for covariates. The association was bifurcated by the variable self-efficacy (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the cusp model was better than linea

Outcomes and economic analysis of routine preoperative 4-dimensional CT for surgical intervention in de novo primary hyperparathyroidism: does clinical benefit justify the cost?

BACKGROUND: Preoperative imaging in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism provides important localization information. Although 4-dimensional neck CT (4DCT) can precisely localize hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue, the contribution of 4DCT to overall cost, operating room time, and hospital stay is unknown. STUDY DESIGN: Records of 535 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who underwent parathyroidectomy at our institution from 1996 to 2010 were reviewed. All patients had preoperative cervical ultrasonography and sestamibi scanning, and most (78.9%) underwent preoperative 4DCT. A dec

[The economic evaluation of group examination for gastrointestinal disease in an electronics corporation--the cost-benefit analysis of follow-up study for peptic ulcer].

To investigate the usefulness of gastrointestinal fiberscope examination (GIF) for peptic ulcer in the health care station (station), a cost-benefit analysis was performed from the standpoint of the company, the health insurance society (insurance society), and workers. Before the analysis, the clinical course of the peptic ulcer, direct cost of the examination, and indirect cost due to time taken for the examination at the station were compared with those in a private hospital (hospital). In 1994, 202 cases of gastric ulcer (GU) (194 male cases, 8 female cases) and 199 cases of duodenal ulcer…

Incremental net benefit of cholecystectomy compared with alternative treatments in people with gallstones or cholecystitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cost-utility studies.

INTRODUCTION: Cholecystectomy is a standard treatment in the management of symptomatic gallstone disease. Current literature has contradicting views on the cost-effectiveness of different cholecystectomy treatments. We have conducted a systematic reappraisal of literature concerning the cost-effectiveness of cholecystectomy in management of gallstone disease. METHODS: We systematically searched for economic evaluation studies from PubMed, Embase and Scopus for eligible studies from inception up to July 2020. We pooled the incremental net benefit (INB) with a 95% CI using a random-effects mode

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Using A Single Dose of Tranexamic Acid in Degenerative Lumbar Scoliosis Patients Undergoing Long-Segment Spinal Fusion Surgery: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND Degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS) patients undergoing posterior long-segment spinal fusion surgery often require perioperative blood transfusions, and previous studies have reported that increased complications and additional costs accompany these transfusions. One method for decreasing transfusions is the administration of tranexamic acid (TXA). We sought to evaluate the costs and benefits of preoperative administration of 1 g of intravenous TXA, without maintenance, in DLS patients undergoing long-segment spinal fusion surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients who received TXA (TXA

Estimation of Health and Economic Benefits of a Small Automatic External Defibrillator for Rapid Treatment of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SMART): A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) occurs in 0.4% of the general population and up to 6% or more of at-risk groups each year. Early CPR and defibrillation improves SCA outcomes but access to automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) remains limited. METHODS: Markov models were used to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a portable SMART (SMall AED for Rapid Treatment of SCA) approach to early SCA management over a life-time horizon in at-risk and not at-risk populations. Simulated patients (n = 600,000) who had not received an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) were randomized to

Transmission reduction, health benefits, and upper-bound costs of interventions to improve retention on antiretroviral therapy: a combined analysis of three mathematical models.

BACKGROUND: In this so-called treat-all era, antiretroviral therapy (ART) interruptions contribute to an increasing proportion of HIV infections and deaths. Many strategies to improve retention on ART cost more than standard of care. In this study, we aimed to estimate the upper-bound costs at which such interventions should be adopted. METHODS: In this combined analysis, we compared the infections averted, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) averted, and upper-bound costs of interventions that improve ART retention in three HIV models with diverse structures, assumptions, and baseline set

Construction of a hydrophobic-hydrophilic open-droplet microfluidic chemosensor towards colorimetric/spectrophotometric recognition of quetiapine fumarate: a cost-benefit method for biomedical analysis using a smartphone.

Quetiapine fumarate (QF) is used to treat a number of mental/emotional diseases, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and abrupt bouts of mania or depression linked to bipolar disorder. This antipsychotic medicine can be deadly if an overdose is given to a person. Therefore, the sensitive identification of QF in bodily fluids is very important. In this study, an innovative low-cost colorimetric chemosensor based on silver nanoprism transfiguration in a phosphate-buffered saline (PBS)/Cl- matrix was developed and successfully tested for the recognition of QF in human-exhaled breath conden
