Inequalities in reported use of cervical screening in Estonia: results from cross-sectional studies in 2004-2020.

BACKGROUND: Despite the national cervical cancer (CC) screening program established in 2006, the CC incidence in Estonia in 2020 was still one of the highest in Europe. To better understand the possible barriers among women, the aim of this study was to describe the inequalities in the Pap smear uptake trend in 2004-2020 and to analyse the associations between different factors in Estonia. METHODS: Weighted data of 25-64-year-old women (N = 6685) from population-based cross-sectional studies of Health Behaviour among Estonian Adult Population in 2004-2020 was used. Linear trends in uptake of …

Global perspective of familial hypercholesterolaemia: a cross-sectional study from the EAS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC).

BACKGROUND: The European Atherosclerosis Society Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC) global registry provides a platform for the global surveillance of familial hypercholesterolaemia through harmonisation and pooling of multinational data. In this study, we aimed to characterise the adult population with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and described how it is detected and managed globally. METHODS: Using FHSC global registry data, we did a cross-sectional assessment of adults (aged 18 years or older) with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of probable or defin

Identifying the psychological determinants of handwashing: Results from two cross-sectional questionnaire studies in Haiti and Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Diarrheal disease kills around 760,000 infants every year. Many of these deaths could have been prevented by handwashing with soap. However, the whole range of psychological factors encouraging handwashing is not yet identified and handwashing campaigns are often limited to awareness-raising and education. The purpose of this article was to identify the psychological determinants of handwashing in Haiti (study 1) and Ethiopia (study 2). METHODS: Data were collected cross-sectionally by administering face-to-face interviews with the primary caregiver in a participating household (N

Prevalence and severity of anemia and iron deficiency: cross-sectional studies in adolescent schoolgirls in western Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: Anemia is a major public health concern in preschool children and pregnant women in the developing world. While many studies have examined these two at-risk groups, there is a paucity of data on anemia in adolescents living in developing countries in the complex ecologic context of poverty, parasitism, and malnutrition. We evaluated the prevalence, severity, and risk factors of anemia in adolescent schoolgirls in an area with intense malaria transmission in western Kenya. DESIGN: Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted, using a multistage random sample design. SETTING: Public p

Twenty years' research on peer victimization and psychosocial maladjustment: a meta-analytic review of cross-sectional studies.

Cross-sectional quantitative designs are often used to investigate whether peer victimization is positively related to psychosocial maladjustment. This paper presents a meta-analytic review of cross-sectional studies, published between 1978 and 1997, of the association of peer victimization with psychosocial maladjustment. Mean effect sizes were calculated for the association between peer victimization and each form of maladjustment (depression, loneliness, generalized and social anxiety, and global and social self-worth) assessed. The results suggested that victimization is most strongly rela…

Beta 2-microglobulinuria in a population exposed to Balkan endemic nephropathy: inferences from repeated cross-sectional studies.

Baseline data from a study run in 1974, which comprised beta 2-microglobulinuria (beta 2mu) measurements at monthly intervals from 416 members in 112 households from the BEN affected village of Petka, were compared with the results of two subsequent, cross sectional studies. In June 1988, retesting involved 320 available persons from the same households. Another collection of 284 urine specimens took place in October 1989. Prevalence of tubular proteinuria was the same in 1988 and 1989 as it was in 1974, indicating that the level of exposure to nephrotoxic agent did not change over time. Over

Electrodiagnostic Studies and Ultrasound Cross-Sectional Area of the Median Nerve in Patients With Isolated Cervical Radiculopathy.

PURPOSE: Although the literature has shown that the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the carpal tunnel on ultrasound is enlarged in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, it does not provide information regarding whether proximal nerve pathology, such as that seen in cervical radiculopathy, increases the CSA of the median nerve. METHODS: In this study, 15 patients were enrolled who had a clinical diagnosis of cervical radiculopathy but not carpal tunnel syndrome. All patients underwent electrodiagnostic studies and ultrasound measurement of the CSA of the median nerve. RESULTS: Increased median

Correlation of ultrasound cross-sectional area of the median nerve, nerve conduction studies and 2-point discrimination.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between a measure of physical performance, a measure of physiology and a measure of anatomy in the setting of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). METHODS: A retrospective review of 215 consecutive patients with suspected CTS was conducted. All patients were evaluated with static 2-point discrimination (2PD), ultrasound (US) measurement of the median nerve cross-sectional area (CSA), and nerve conduction studies (NCS). Correlations between 2PD and US and NCS parameters were calculated. The ability of US/NCS to predict 2PD was e

Dietary acid load, metabolic acidosis and insulin resistance - Lessons from cross-sectional and overfeeding studies in humans.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Western diets rich in animal protein and poor in fruit and vegetables increase the body acid load, a predictor of type 2 diabetes risk. The relationships between dietary acid load, mild metabolic acidosis and insulin resistance remain unclear. The objective of this study was to assess the association between dietary acid load, body acid/base markers and peripheral insulin resistance at baseline and following a short-term overfeeding intervention in healthy individuals. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study of 104 men and women, insulin sensitivity was measured by hyperinsuline

Determinants of postpartum lactation insufficiency in caesarean section in Chinese mothers: A cross-sectional study.

This study explored the status of postpartum lactation in caesarean section mothers and identified the factors that influence lactation insufficiency. A total of 265 mothers who delivered via cesarean section between November 2021 and November 2022 were followed for six months. Lactation efficiency was measured by collecting daily milk output using a breast pump from postpartum days 1 to 10; insufficient lactation was defined as a total daily milk volume <500 mL on day 10. Lactation typically began between 25 and 48 hours postpartum (45.1%), with a delayed onset of lactogenesis incidence of 19

Implementation of the Robson classification for caesarean sections in Israel: a 10-year cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, caesarean section (CS) rates have dramatically increased; the reasons for this trend are multifactorial and not fully understood. This continuing trend has raised public health concerns regarding higher maternal and perinatal risks, high costs, healthcare efficiency, and inequality of services. We aimed to characterize and evaluate Israel's CS rate by applying the Robson classification system. METHODS: This was a national retrospective cross-sectional study. Data from 1,061,786 live births were collected from electronic medical records of women admitted for deli

Obstetrics Outcomes in Women Undergoing Second-Stage Cesarean Section: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Cesarean section (CS) involves the delivery of the fetus through incisions in the abdomen or uterine walls which is an alternative to vaginal delivery. In the majority of women, second-stage CS is performed without even attempting assisted vaginal delivery. This leads to difficulty for obstetricians for whether to perform an immediate CS or attempt a difficult vaginal birth as the effective method of delivery as CS are linked with higher morbidities which further increase when a CS is performed in the second stage. Hence, the present study was performed to find out obstetrics result

Association between maternal mortality and caesarean section in Ethiopia: a national cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies concluded that there is a reduction of maternal deaths with improved access to caesarean section, while other studies showed the existence of a direct association between the two variables. In Ethiopia, literature about the association between maternal mortality and caesarean section is scarce. This study was aimed to assess the association between maternal mortality ratios and caesarean section rates in hospitals in Ethiopia. METHODS: Analysis was done of a national maternal health dataset of 293 hospitals that accessed from the Ethiopian Public Health Institute.
