Induction of terpene biosynthesis in dinoflagellate symbionts of Caribbean gorgonians.

This report describes a series of experiments designed to determine if terpene biosynthesis is inducible in two families of marine terpenes, pseudopterosins from the gorgonian coral Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae and fuscol from Eunicea fusca. Since we have recently shown that terpene biosynthesis is not under the control of the invertebrate host, but rather occurs within a dinoflagellate preparation, we examined the terpene content of the dinoflagellate symbiont following a decrease in UV/vis radiation as well as in response to the addition of methyl jasmonate, salicylic acid and gibberellic a

Differential volatile emissions and salicylic acid levels from tobacco plants in response to different strains of Pseudomonas syringae.

Pathogen-induced plant responses include changes in both volatile and non-volatile secondary metabolites. To characterize the role of bacterial pathogenesis in plant volatile emissions, tobacco plants, Nicotiana tabacum L. K326, were inoculated with virulent, avirulent, and mutant strains of Pseudomonas syringae. Volatile compounds released by pathogen-inoculated tobacco plants were collected, identified, and quantified. Tobacco plants infected with the avirulent strains P. syringae pv. maculicola ES4326 (Psm ES4326) or pv. tomato DC3000 (Pst DC3000), emitted quantitatively different, but qual

Evidence for regulation of resistance in Arabidopsis to Egyptian cotton worm by salicylic and jasmonic acid signaling pathways.

Signaling cross-talk between wound- and pathogen-response pathways influences resistance of plants to insects and disease. To elucidate potential interactions between salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) defense pathways, we exploited the availability of characterized mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. and monitored resistance to Egyptian cotton worm (Spodoptera littoralis Boisd.; Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). This generalist herbivore is sensitive to induced plant defense pathways and is thus a useful model for a mechanistic analysis of insect resistance. As expected, treatment of w

Prostaglandins and congeners. Synthesis of simplified prostaglandins. Inhibition of gastric acid secretion by 2-(omega-carboxyalkyl)-3-alkylcycloalkanones.

Simplified prostaglandin analogs were prepared and tested for inhibition of gastric acid secretion. An alkyl moiety of 1-8 carbon atoms was substituted for the C-13 to C-20 chain of the PG's. Analog variations included shortened and lengthened acid side chains, beta-oxidation blockage, beta-ketol, Falpha-hydroxyl, and cyclohexanone substitution. Maximal inhibitory activity was obtained with the shorter alkyl moieties.

13/16-Specific Allene Oxide Synthase BnAOS (CYP74A) of Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.): Identification and Biochemical Properties.

Lipoxygenase cascade is the source of key plant bioregulators, oxylipins, which are oxidized derivatives of polyunsaturated fatty acids that play a crucial role in growth and development, as well as stress response. The key enzymes of the lipoxygenase cascade are allene oxide synthases (AOS) and hydroperoxide lyases, which are present in all known angiosperms. Although these enzymes play a central role in defining the pattern of the final metabolites of the cascade, significant gaps still exist in understanding their catalytic properties and positional specificity. This paper describes the all

Methyl jasmonate-loaded chitosan nanoparticles and biochar improve maize thermotolerance.

Heat stress is a major abiotic constraint that severely limits maize (Zea mays L.) productivity under changing climate conditions. This study explored a novel integrative strategy to enhance thermotolerance in maize through the combined application of methyl jasmonate-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (MJNPs) and eucalyptus-derived biochar (EBB). Methyl jasmonate was nano-encapsulated using the ionic gelation method and characterized by SEM, TEM, and FTIR analyses, which confirmed uniform spherical nanoparticles and effective surface functionalization. A greenhouse experiment was conducted under c

Host defense responses of mesquite (Prosopis laevigata, Fabaceae) trees against the mistletoe (Psittacanthus calyculatus, Loranthaceae) during the early stage of infection.

Mesquite (Prosopis laevigata, Fabaceae) is a legume widely distributed in Mexico and infested by the mistletoe (Psittacanthus calyculatus, Loranthaceae), a parasitic plant that absorbs water and nutrients from the mesquite. For parasitism to become established, the mistletoe must evade host defenses. To date, these defenses have only been studied in hosts with advanced parasitic infestations, but the initial defense of mesquite against these infestations remains unknown. The objective of this work was to investigate the early stress responses of mesquite trees after the first physical contact

Biological treatment of N-methylpyrrolidone, cyclopentanone, and diethylene glycol monobutyl ether distilled residues and their effects on nitrogen removal in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant.

Manufacturing processes in semiconductor and photonics industries involve the use of a significant amount of organic solvents. Recycle and reuse of these solvents produce distillate residues and require treatment before being discharged. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the biological treatment system in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant that treats wastewater containing distillate residues from the recycling of electronic chemicals. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the optimal operational conditions for the full-scale wastewater treatment plant. To achieve

Jasmonic acid and salicylic acid modulate systemic reactive oxygen species signaling during stress responses.

Plants can send long-distance cell-to-cell signals from a single tissue subjected to stress to the entire plant. This ability is termed "systemic signaling" and is essential for plant acclimation to stress and/or defense against pathogens. Several signaling mechanisms are associated with systemic signaling, including the reactive oxygen species (ROS) wave, calcium wave, hydraulic wave, and electric signals. The ROS wave coordinates multiple physiological, molecular, and metabolic responses among different parts of the plant and is essential for systemic acquired acclimation (SAA) to stress. In

Salicylic acid and jasmonic acid in elevated CO2-induced plant defense response to pathogens.

Plants respond to elevated CO2 (eCO2) via a variety of signaling pathways that often rely on plant hormones. In particular, phytohormone salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) play a key role in plant defense against diverse pathogens at eCO2. eCO2 affects the synthesis and signaling of SA and/or JA and variations in SA and JA signaling lead to variations in plant defense responses to pathogens. In general, eCO2 promotes SA signaling and represses the JA pathway, and thus diseases caused by biotrophic and hemibiotrophic pathogens are typically suppressed, while the incidence and severity o

Exploring the Immunotherapeutic Potential of Oleocanthal against Murine Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniasis is a major tropical disease with increasing global incidence. Due to limited therapeutic options with severe drawbacks, the discovery of alternative treatments based on natural bioactive compounds is important. In our previous studies we have pointed out the antileishmanial activities of olive tree-derived molecules. In this study, we aimed to investigate the in vitro and in vivo antileishmanial as well as the in vivo immunomodulatory effects of oleocanthal, a molecule that has recently gained increasing scientific attention. Pure oleocanthal was isolated from extra virgin olive

Bacillus-Secreted Oxalic Acid Induces Tomato Resistance Against Gray Mold Disease Caused by Botrytis cinerea by Activating the JA/ET Pathway.

Bacillus spp. are known for their ability to control plant diseases; however, the mechanism of disease control by Bacillus spp. is still unclear. Previously, bacterial organic acids have been implicated in the process of disease suppression. We extracted the total organic acid from Bacillus cereus AR156 culture filtrate and identified oxalic acid (OA) as the programmed cell death-inducing factor. OA strongly suppressed the lesion caused by Botrytis cinerea without significant antagonism against the fungus. Low concentration of OA produced by Bacillus spp. inhibited cell death caused by high co

In vivo Imaging Enables Understanding of Seamless Plant Defense Responses to Wounding and Pathogen Attack.

Plants are exposed to varied biotic stresses, including sequential or simultaneous attack by insects and pathogens. To overcome these complex stresses, plants must perceive each of the stresses, then integrate and relay the information throughout the plant body and eventually activate local and systemic resistance responses. Previous molecular genetic studies identified jasmonic acid and salicylic acid as key plant hormones of wound and immune responses. These hormones, combined with their antagonistic interaction, play critical roles in the initiation and regulation of defense responses again

Jasmonic acid and salicylic acid induce the accumulation of sucrose and increase resistance to chilling injury in peach fruit.

BACKGROUND: Salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) can both enhance resistance of chilling injury (CI) in cold-storage peach fruit, but the regulatory mechanisms involved and whether there is a coordinated regulation between them is unclear. In this study, postharvest peach fruit were treated with an aqueous SA solution for 15 min or an aqueous JA solution for 30 s before storage at 4 °C for 35 days. RESULTS: SA and JA treatments both delayed and reduced development of internal browning (a symptom of CI) and induced the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and sucrose. The SA and JA also red

Different mechanisms of Trichoderma virens-mediated resistance in tomato against Fusarium wilt involve the jasmonic and salicylic acid pathways.

In the present study, we investigated the role of Trichoderma virens (TriV_JSB100) spores or cell-free culture filtrate in the regulation of growth and activation of the defence responses of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici by the development of a biocontrol-plant-pathogen interaction system. Two-week-old tomato seedlings primed with TriV_JSB100 spores cultured on barley grains (BGS) or with cell-free culture filtrate (CF) were inoculated with Fusarium pathogen under glasshouse conditions; this resulted in significantly lower disease incidence

Maintaining postharvest quality of cold stored 'Hass' avocados by altering the fatty acids content and composition with the use of natural volatile compounds - methyl jasmonate and methyl salicylate.

BACKGROUND: Low temperatures are often used to reduce metabolic processes and extend the storage life of fruit; however, in the case of avocado, a temperature below 3 °C will often result in the development of physiological disorders associated with chilling injury. The objective of this study was to investigate the ability of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and methyl salicylate (MeSA) vapours to alleviate chilling injury in 'Hass' avocado fruit kept at 2 °C for 21 days followed by 6-7 days of shelf-life at 20 °C, simulating supply chain conditions. RESULTS: The incidence and severity of chilling in

Enhanced glucosinolates in root exudates of Brassica rapa ssp. rapa mediated by salicylic acid and methyl jasmonate.

Elicitation studies with salicylic acid (SA) and methyl jasmonate (MJ) inducing a targeted rhizosecretion of high levels of anticarcinogenic glucosinolates in Brassica rapa ssp. rapa plants were conducted. Elicitor applications not only led to an accumulation of individual indole glucosinolates and the aromatic 2-phenylethyl glucosinolate in the turnip organs but also in turnip root exudates. This indicates an extended systemic response, which comprises the phyllosphere with all aboveground plant organs and the rhizosphere including the belowground root system and also root exudates. Vanadocene(IV) dicyanide complexes: the evidence super-hyperfine coupling for compounds with 13CN ligands.

An EPR study of the vanadocene complexes (C(5)H(5))2V(CN)2 and (CH(3)C(5)H(4))2V(CN)2 was carried out. Such compounds show strong super-hyperfine coupling (|a(iso)(13C)| approximately 1.27 mT) when 13C labeled cyanide is used for their preparation. Super-hyperfine splitting was observed in the isotropic spectra of solution samples as well as in the anisotropic spectra of frozen solutions. Such studies were supplemented with structural characterization of the parent compounds. Molecular structure of the complex (CH(3)C(5)H(4))2V(CN)2 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.
