Seven premature hydrocephalics presenting with lambdoid positional moulding (LPM) were reviewed. All were treated for hydrocephalus secondary to aqueductal stenosis, Dandy Walker Syndrome and infection. Parenchymal hemorrhage, intraventricular bleed, cortical atrophy, septal agenesis, cortical anomalies and subdural hygroma were the other common associations. These children did not show expected improvement in their higher mental functions at 6 months to 5.4 years of follow-up, following the management of hydrocephalus. It was not the LPM but associated intracranial anomalies, which were most

25 of about 300 infants and children, who had been examined by magnetic resonance imaging since 1984, had a congenital malformation of the brain. Cystic malformations (e.g. arachnoid cysts) were the most frequent lesion. Other findings were: Arnold-Chiari malformation, septo-optic dysplasia, Dandy-Walker syndrome, agenesis of the corpus callosum, migration disorders. The multiplanar slice orientation and the good tissue contrast in magnetic resonance imaging supplied a clear diagnosis in all cases. Compared with other imaging modalities (CT, ultrasonography) the depiction of the morphology was…

Joubert syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive condition, first described by Joubert in 1969. We present a case of Joubert syndrome from a consanguineous family in which, apart from the cerebellar vermis agenesis, ventriculomegaly, bilateral postaxial polydactyly of hands and right foot and micropenis, episodes of fetal breathing pattern with an increased respiratory rate were also demonstrated by prenatal ultrasound scan. At birth the infant showed an odd face and bilateral fleshy nodules of the tongue. He had an abnormal breathing pattern of alternating tachypnea and apnea. Cranial MRI show

The p.Asp211Gly homozygous HYLS1 mutation is so far known to cause only hydrolethalus syndrome, a lethal malformation syndrome. We report living sibling patients with a homozygous no-stop mutation in exon 4 of HYLS1, NM_145014.2:c.900A>C (p.Ter300TyrextTer11) in the second decade of life. The proband has Joubert syndrome (JS). The younger brother also has JS and an enlarged posterior fossa that was initially diagnosed as Dandy-Walker malformation. The present mutation is unique as it affects the stop codon. The product protein HYLS1 plays an essential role in the formation of the primary ciliu

Edwards syndrome (trisomy of chromosome 18) is generally characterized by the disorders of central nervous system, as well as the musculoskeletal and genitourinary systems. In majority of the cases with trisomy 18 the following malformations can be found: ventricular septal defect, horseshoe kidneys, oesophageal atresia, omphalocele, facial clefts, diaphragmatic hernias and genital hypoplasia. We report a male patient with Edwards syndrome. The boy had a partial agenesis of corpus callosum, oesophageal atresia with tracheo-oesophageal fistula, renal agenesis, ventricular septal defect, Dandy-W

We studied the neuropathologic features of a patient with Coffin-Siris syndrome. Two previously reported cases showed Dandy-Walker (D-W) malformations. In the present case there was no evidence of D-W malformation; instead there were hindbrain abnormalities of inferior and medial accessory olives, large arcuate nuclei, heterotopic olivary nuclei, and heterotopic nuclei in the white matter of the cerebellum. Although the hindbrain abnormalities in this case are different from those previously reported, they all have in common an intimate developmental relationship with the same embryological ar

We describe a child with trigonocephaly, strabismus, upslanting palpebral fissures, nasal bridge hypoplasia, hypertrophic alveolar ridges and large gingivo-labial frenula, short neck, hip "dysplasia," equinovarus deformities, cryptorchidism, atrial septal defect ostium secundum, and severe mental retardation, findings consistent with C syndrome. The patient also had a Dandy-Walker malformation, complete callosal agenesis, and occipital meningocele. These structural defects are independent of the premature closure of the metopic suture, and confirm that midline brain anomalies are part of C syn

BACKGROUND: Joubert syndrome is a very rare condition with dismal prognosis. It is characterized by several abnormalities including molar tooth sign on MRI. When coupled with mega cisterna magna- a feature of the Dandy Walker syndrome- it is categorized as Joubert plus syndrome.
CASE REPORT: A 16 month old male child with Joubert syndrome was referred to the Pediatric Dentistry Department Clinic, Faculty of Dentistry Alexandria University, complaining of severe tongue and lower lip injury due to self-mutilation. He required multiple teeth extractions under general anesthesia to prevent furthe

PHACES syndrome consists of the constellation of manifestations including posterior fossa anomalies of the brain (most commonly Dandy-Walker malformations), hemangiomas of the face and scalp, arterial abnormalities, cardiac defects, eye anomalies and sternal defects. We present a case with a possible PHACES syndrome including sternal cleft and supraumbilical raphé, precordial skin tag, persistent left superior vena cava and subtle narrowing of the aorta with an endobronchial carcinoid tumor. All these anomalies were discovered on chest multi-detector CT. This is a unique case of PHACES syndrom

BACKGROUND: Neurocutaneous melanosis is a rare phakomatosis characterized by large or multiple pigmented nevi and melanosis of the leptomeninges. It is often complicated by hydrocephalus due to melanotic deposits interfering with cerebrospinal fluid reabsorption in the basal cisterns or causing foraminal or aqueductal obstruction. In 10% of cases, it will be associated with the Dandy-Walker complex.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a 6-year-old girl with multiple congenital hairy nevi presenting with generalized tonic-clonic seizures, headache, and vomiting. Neuroimaging showed a comm

Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis in neonatal period may cause neurological impairment, epilepsy, and lead to stroke. It is caused primarily by coagulopathy of numerous reasons, occasionally perinatal asphyxia, traumatic delivery and hyperhomocysteinemia. Dandy-Walker malformation is characterized by agenesis or hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, and enlargement of the posterior fossa. Dandy-Walker malformation, variant, and mega cisterna magna represent a spectrum of developmental anomalies. Insults to developing cerebellar hemispheres and the fourth

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the associated abnormalities and clinical outcomes of fetuses with Dandy-Walker malformations.
METHODS: Sonograms and medical reports of 78 cases were reviewed and information regarding each outcome was collected from autopsy records, hospital charts and specialists caring for the surviving infants.
RESULTS: We identified 64 fetuses with classic Dandy-Walker malformation (DW) and 14 fetuses with Dandy-Walker variant (DWV). A high proportion (44.8%) of the parents were consanguineous. The spectrum and proportion of central nervous system (

A 1.5-year-old boy with macrocephaly due to a Dandy-Walker malformation presented with progressive hydrocephalus, extensive muscular hypotonia, transient cholestatic syndrome, extensive coagulation abnormalities and elevated creatine kinase indicating myopathy. Diagnostic work-up indicated a congenital disorder of glycosylation (CDG, formerly carbohydrate deficient glycoprotein syndrome). The serum transferrin pattern obtained by automated isoelectric focusing (IEF) showed an hitherto unreported pattern with strongly elevated tri-, di-, mono- and asialotransferrin bands, increasing in this ord

A case of holoprosencephaly associated with Dandy-Walker cyst is reported. The patient was a male baby whose mother had normal serum titers for toxoplasma, syphilis, rubella and hepatitis B. She had no history of diabetes mellitus, administration of drugs or irradiation during the pregnancy. At the 8th month of gestation, fetal hydrocephalus was diagnosed by ultrasonic imaging. He was delivered by caesarean section at 34 weeks and 4 days, weighing 2,644 g. His head circumference was 42 cm; the anterior fontanel was not distended and its tension was normal. The chromosomal karyotype was a norma

In the past 20 years, 43 patients with congenital hydrocephalus underwent surgical treatment for hydrocephalus in our clinic (Myelomeningocele, Dandy-Walker syndrome, holoprosencephaly and hydranencephaly, which are frequently associated with dysgenesis of the corpus callosum, were excluded). The gestational stage at the onset of hydrocephalus was assessed on the basis of the morphology of the corpus callosum. The patients were then divided into four groups according to stage of onset. A relation between the stage of onset and the long-term functional scores was demonstrated. The earlier the g…

Coffine-Siris syndrome or "fifth digit" syndrome is a multiple congenital anomaly-mental retardation syndrome with severe developmental delay, coarse facial features, hirsutism and absent fifth fingernails or toenails or fifth distal phalanges. The etiology of this syndrome remains uncertain. Here we report a stillborn male baby born from consanguineous parents who might represent a very severe form of Coffine-Siris syndrome with cardiac defect and multiple brain malformations including corpus callosum agenesis and Dandy Walker malformation. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first case l

In this article we report the cases of an 11-year-old girl who presented with an occipital atretic cephalocele and 2 of her siblings who had similar occipital lesions. Neuroimaging studies in these three instances showed a spectrum of posterior fossa cystic malformations. The girl's parents and a further sibling were also investigated by neuroimaging studies that proved to be normal. The familial occurrence of cephaloceles in general, and of atretic cephaloceles in particular, seems to be very rare in the absence of a known syndrome. Current literature on the familial presentation of cephaloce
