Sudden deafness and asymptomatic mumps.

Adult patients who had experienced sudden deafness were examined for possible presence of subclinical mumps infection, using a new method of detecting mumps IgM antibody. Three of 53 patients demonstrated a positive reaction, indicating a strong correlation of sudden deafness with recent mumps infection. Mumps vaccination is recommended for those who have one deaf ear, in order to protect the better ear from mumps infection.

[Clinical aspects of sudden deafness].

Sudden deafness is a disease of multifactorial genesis. The cause remains as ever unknown. In addition to the vascular theory, the possibility of a perilymphatic fistula due to rupture of the oval or the round window membranes has gained more significance. Therefore the treatment of sudden deafness should begin as soon as possible. We treat such patients with infusions of Dextran 40. BVK and Complamin in increasing amounts, in addition to stella-ganglion block. It is not justifiable, for legal reasons to withhold treatment, and therapy should begin immediately.

A case of cortical deafness.

The presentation of cortical deafness, associated with mild dysphasia due to bilateral temporo-parietal infarction in a 70-year-old man, is described. Partial return of hearing occurred and associated with this a more complex cortical hearing disorder was seen with elements of both decreased auditory acuity and auditory agnosia. After 1 year a mild hearing loss persisted with difficulty in speech discrimination and an inability to recognise music. Bilateral temporo-parietal infarction was confirmed by CT scan. The cortical auditory evoked responses were initially absent despite intact brain st…

Patterns of deafness in newborns.

The Crib-o-gram neonatal hearing screening project has detected 42 babies with handicapping degrees of hearing loss, mainly sensorineural. I … d the hearing loss after hospital discharge, thus indicating that most, if not all, early childhood deafness is present in the neonatal period.

Vestibular symptoms in mumps deafness.

Deafness appears in as many as 4% of adult cases of epidemic parotitis. It is often severe, though reversible and is usually unilateral. Vertigo has been reported in mumps, as have occasional cases with impaired caloric reaction. Twenty cases of unilateral hearing impairment in mumps have been investigaed with audiometry and electronystagmography in order to determine the degree of permanent lesions. Nine of the patients had noted vertigo when falling ill with protitis. Five of these had normal calorics, 3 were impaired and one was without response in the deaf ear. No certain correlation betwe…

Thrombocytopenia, macrothrombocytopathia, nephritis and deafness.

The association of thrombocytopenia, macrothrombocytopathia, nephritis and deafness is rare. Reported here is a new case of this triple association. The clinical course, the nephropathologic findings and the bilateral neurologic hearing loss were similar to those already reported, with a slowly progressive impairment of renal function accompanied by a persistent proteinuria. The platelet diameters were increased. These macroplatelets contained granules of normal structure but with an irregular distribution in the cytoplasm. In other areas the cytoplasm was rich in surface connected system. The…
