Inflammatory dentigerous cyst of mandibular first premolar associated with endodontically treated primary first molar: a rare case report.

AIM: Inflammatory dentigerous cysts usually occur in the mixed dentition. It has been reported that inflammatory lesions from the root area of a deciduous tooth bring about the development of dentigerous cysts around the unerupted permanent tooth bud. Endodontic treatment is a common and successful procedure for periapical inflammation in children. An inflammatory dentigerous cyst can occur in conjunction with endodontically treated primary tooth. CASE REPORT: This article reports a case of 6 years and 6 months old boy, with a single, well-defined, unilocular, radiolucent area enclosing the f…

Parotid fistula--an extra-orally draining infected dentigerous cyst associated with a supernumerary fourth molar in ascending ramus.

UNLABELLED: An infected cyst, associated with a supernumerary fourth molar in the ascending ramus of the mandible, presented with parotid swelling, trismus and pain. It was managed as a parotid infection but recurred and a draining pre-auricular sinus developed, which was thought to be a parotid fistula. This was managed by cautery, followed by excision of the fistula, both of which were unsuccessful. Following this, further investigations revealed that the cause of the facial sinus was in fact a cyst associated with a mandibular fourth molar in the posterior ascending ramus. The tooth was ext

Decompression of a Mandibular Dentigerous Cyst Using a Dual-Purpose Removable Appliance in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

Dentigerous cysts (DCs) are among the most common odontogenic lesions in mixed dentition. Management strategies vary from radical enucleation-often necessitating the removal of associated tooth germs-to more conservative decompression techniques. In pediatric patients, decompression is preferred as it preserves developing permanent teeth and supports normal eruption. In January 2023, an 8.5-year-old male presented to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Akdeniz University, with swelling in the right mandibular region. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed a unilocular radiolucent le…

Window decompression surgery for the treatment of large mandibular dentigerous cysts in the mixed dentition stage: a case report.

Dentigerous cyst is a common type of odontogenic jawbone cyst in clinical practice, often involving immature permanent tooth germ in children. Traditional cyst curettage may cause damage to the developing permanent tooth germ and surrounding important anatomical structures. This article reports a case of a large mandibular dentigerous cyst in a 9-year-old female child, which was treated with negative pressure drainage through window decompression surgery. During the operation, a lateral opening drainage tube was prepared and fixed with flowable resin. The cyst significantly shrank 6 months aft…

A Rare Case Report of a Large Dentigerous Cyst in the Maxillary Sinus Associated With an Ectopic Maxillary Third Molar.

Ectopic eruption of permanent molars is an uncommon developmental anomaly characterized by abnormal tooth positioning, which can lead to significant complications. In rare instances, ectopic molars may be associated with dentigerous cysts, particularly within the maxillary sinus, posing challenges for diagnosis and management. This report discusses a rare case of a 58-year-old male who presented with chronic right maxillary sinusitis, intermittent facial pain, and purulent nasal and oral discharge. Radiological evaluation, including cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), revealed a completely o…

Marsupialization followed by enucleation of a large maxillary dentigerous cyst in a young child: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: This report presents a rare case of a dentigerous cyst (DC) associated with the maxillary right canine in a young child, successfully treated with marsupialization followed by enucleation. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 9-year-old girl was referred to a maxillofacial hospital after routine dental exam revealed a large lesion in maxilla. Radiograph showed a 5 × 6 cm unilocular radiolucent lesion in the right maxillary sinus, with destruction of the sinus and nasal cavity walls and displacement of the upper right canine into the floor of the right eye. Marsupialization was performed, and…

Marsupialization of Dentigerous Cysts Followed by Enucleation and Extraction of Deeply Impacted Third Molars: A Report of Two Cases.

A dentigerous cyst (DC) is a developmental odontogenic cyst that involves the crown or a portion of the crown of an unerupted or impacted tooth. Mandibular third molars are the most commonly implicated teeth in this type of cyst. DC can be asymptomatic and detected by an ordinary radiographic examination. Two massive DC with deeply impacted third molars were treated by marsupialization followed by surgical extraction and enucleation of the residual lining. In both cases, sensation on the lower lip and chin remained normal, and complete bone healing was achieved. Decompression by simple marsupi…

Conservative management of a dentigerous cyst associated with eruption of teeth in a 7-year-old girl: a case report.

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts that are related to the crowns of permanent teeth. The lesion in this study was detected in a routine panoramic radiograph that revealed a well-defined osteolytic lesion that measured 2.5 cm in diameter, with the crown of the mandibular permanent second premolar displaced to the lower border of the mandible. The apex of the tooth was still open. The aim of this article was to report the case of a 7-year-old girl with a dentigerous cyst associated with the tooth buds of premolars. The therapeutic approach consisted of extraction of the primary mola…

Conservative management of large mandibular dentigerous cysts with a novel approach for follow up: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cysts are odontogenic cysts of the jaws accounting for approximately 24% of all epithelium-lined jaw cysts. Rarely, these cysts can become extremely large causing additional symptoms, while challenging treatment. This article represents a novel approach for radiological treatment follow up of large dentigerous cysts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Dentigerous cysts were treated by marsupialization, using dedicated obturators and enucleation of the cyst afterwards. Teeth vitality in the lesion was regularly assessed by laser doppler flowmetry, follow-up of lesion regression was …

Ameloblastoma of the maxillary sinus 11 years after extirpation of extensive dentigerous cysts and dystopic wisdom tooth.

We present the case of a 36-year-old patient with ameloblastoma of the maxillary sinus. The history of the patient was extraordinary with respect to the diagnosis of an extensive odontogenic cyst of this sinus with a maxillary wisdom tooth located far from the region of origin. Both cyst and tooth had been completely extirpated more than 10 years prior to the current tumor diagnosis. Diagnosis of ameloblastoma was based on routinely processed specimen and supported by immunohistochemical markers. Localization and extension of both cyst and neoplasm support the assumption that both entities aro

Decompression of a Dentigerous Cyst in a Child With Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization: A Seven-Year Follow-Up Case Report.

Dentigerous cysts are common developmental odontogenic cysts that may compromise the eruption and morphology of developing teeth. Their management of children increasingly favors conservative approaches, particularly when tooth preservation is possible. Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) introduces additional clinical considerations due to enamel fragility, which may affect patient comfort and complicate postoperative hygiene. An eight-year-old boy with MIH presented with a dentigerous cyst associated with the unerupted mandibular right second molar (tooth 47), incidentally identified on a…

A Case of a Dentigerous Cyst in the Maxillary Sinus Treated Preoperatively With Vascular Embolization to Avoid Intraoperative Abnormal Bleeding.

Bone cysts involving the maxillary sinus are frequently observed, and controlling bleeding from the maxillary or posterior superior alveolar arteries is extremely difficult when the surgical site extends into the palatine fossa or the wing socket behind the maxillary sinus. In this report, we describe a case wherein preoperative endovascular arterial embolization prevented bleeding owing to an unexpected vascular injury that occurred during the removal of a dentigerous cyst from the maxillary sinus. This resulted in a safe operation with less intraoperative bleeding. Although this approach car…

Compound Odontoma and Dentigerous Cyst Associated With an Unerupted Maxillary Canine Tooth in a Weimaraner Dog: A Case Report.

A 7-month-old, male, Weimaraner dog was presented for maxillary swelling. Clinical evaluation including radiographs and computed tomography revealed a large cystic lesion, unerupted right maxillary canine tooth, and mass presumed to be a compound odontoma. The cyst and mass were expansile and occupied a large portion of the nasal cavity displacing anatomical structures of the maxilla. The mass was excised via curettage through an intraoral surgical approach and the unerupted tooth and cystic lining were removed. Histopathology supported dentigerous cyst and compound odontoma. This case confirm…

Adjacent dentigerous cysts with the ectopic displacement of a third mandibular molar and supernumerary (forth) molar: a rare occurrence.

Dentigerous cysts are the most common odontological cysts of the jaws, being associated with the crowns of permanent teeth, especially unerupted mandibular third molars. Multiple dentigerous cysts are rare and most often occur in association with a developmental syndrome. This article presents an unusual case of nonsyndromic adjacent dentigerous cysts associated with a mandibular third molar and a supernumerary molar. This occurrence has not been previously reported.

Serratia infection in a patient with bilateral subcondylar impacted third molars and associated dentigerous cysts: report of case.

A case of bilateral subcondylar impacted mandibular third molars is presented. Both impactions had associated dentigerous cyst, one of which was severely infected with Serratia marcescens and had a draining sinus tract. The patient also had uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and iron deficiency anemia, which altered her response to surgical treatment. This case illustrates the necessity for early identification of infective organisms and determining their antibiotic sensitivity, as well as the need for prophylactic removal of impacted teeth to prevent complications such as those presented.

Infected Dentigerous Cyst of Maxillary Sinus Mimicking Intraoral Abscess in a Pediatric Patient: Management of Misdiagnosis and Inaccurate Treatment.

The article presents the case of a 12-year-old male patient who was suffering from exacerbated (infected) dentigerous cyst of maxillary sinus, associated with impacted canine whose symptoms were deceptively similar to intraoral abscess. The first-aid treatment performed by general dental practitioner consisted of intraoral incision and resulted in oroantral fistula formation. Eventually, the patient's ailments were not resolved, and we had to deal with serious local complications and difficulties. The treatment was performed under general anesthesia in one-day surgery system and included enucl…
