A Community Hospital NICU Developmental Care Partner Program: Feasibility and Association With Decreased Nurse Burnout Without Increased Infant Infection Rates.

BACKGROUND: Volunteers can provide staff-directed sensory inputs to infants hospitalized in the NICU, but research on volunteer programs is limited. PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility of a developmental care partner (DCP) program in a level III NICU and determine its relationship with provider burnout and infant infection rates. METHODS: DCPs were trained to provide sensory input to infants, based on the behavioral cues observed by the occupational therapists and nursing staff, in medically stable infants. Feasibility was assessed by documenting the process of training and utilizing volunt

Palliative care training and associations with burnout in oncology fellows.

BACKGROUND: Burnout among physicians can lead to decreased career satisfaction, physical and emotional exhaustion, and increased medical errors. In oncologists, high exposure to fatal illness is associated with burnout. METHODS: The Maslach Burnout Inventory, measuring Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP), and Personal Accomplishment (PA), was administered to second-year US oncology fellows. Bivariate and multivariate analyses explored associations between burnout and fellow demographics, attitudes, and educational experiences. RESULTS: A total of 254 fellows out of 402 eligible

Incest: some neuropsychiatric findings.

A review of the medical records of twenty-two patients who were the child or younger member of an incestuous relationship revealed a higher than expected incidence of abnormal neuropsychiatric findings. Seventeen patients had abnormal EEG's; six had clinical seizures; and eight of thirteen patients tested gave evidence of a low IQ or organicity. In addition, indications of impulsivity and depersonalization were frequently found in this group. It could be speculated that these neuropsychiatric handicaps create a vulnerability that enhances inappropriate relationships within a family and makes i

[On adjuvant therapy after limited resections for NSCLC Stage IA in patients with high risk of recurrence: waiting for the announced 8th Edition 2017 of TNM Staging System].

The adjuvant therapy in NSCLC Stage IA still remains a controversial issue even in the interdisciplinary decision making after limited resections of the neoplasm as an alternative to lobectomy. The Authors accept from literature that this mainly concerns specific sub-group of patients, the istopathological post-resection diagnosis of whom highlights linfovascular o perineural as well as visceral pleura invasion. There is confidence that the presently depersonalizing rigidity in the guidelines implementation is overcome in the presence of clear istological signs of invasion. As a consequence th

The dissociative disorders. Rarely considered and underdiagnosed.

A wide variety of dissociative disorders, including dissociative amnesia, dissociative fugue, depersonalization disorder, dissociative identity disorder, and various forms of dissociative disorder not otherwise specified. In many instances, these disorders are either underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed secondary to the clinician's mistaken belief that dissociative disorders are rare. Recent research shows that dissociative disorders may comprise 5% to 10% of psychiatric populations. This article reviews the epidemiology and clinical symptomatology of these disorders. In addition, various screening

The Complex Dynamics of Violence and Burnout in Healthcare: A Closer Look at Physicians and Nurses.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine the mediating role of fear of future violence in the relationship between exposure to violent events at work and burnout among physicians and nurses. BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is an escalating concern within healthcare institutions in Türkiye. Increasing exposure to violent events among healthcare professionals contributes to heightened fear of future violence, which may in turn exacerbate burnout. METHODS: A cross-sectional research design was utilized, collecting data via an online survey distributed to 387 physicians and nurses. The hyp

Borderline personality disorder and sexuality: causes and consequences of dissociative symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Sexual risk behavior in patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) is supposed to be associated with traumatic experiences and dissociative symptoms. Nevertheless, scientific research thereon is scarce which might be due to the high prevalence of sexual trauma and fear of overwhelming patients with explicit sexual content. METHODS: We investigated a clinical sample of patients diagnosed with BPD (n = 114) and compared them to a sample of matched healthy controls (HC) (n = 114) concerning the dissociative symptoms derealization, depersonalization, and conversion

Validation of the factor structure of the adolescent dissociative experiences scale in a sample of trauma-exposed detained youth.

OBJECTIVE: The inclusion of a dissociative subtype in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM–5) criteria for the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has highlighted the need for valid and reliable measures of dissociative symptoms across developmental periods. The Adolescent Dissociative Experiences Scale (A-DES) is 1 of the few measures validated for young persons, but previous studies have yielded inconsistent results regarding its factor structure. Further, research to date on the A-DES has been based upon nonclinical samples of youth or those

Physician, Make Thyself: Art-making, Authenticity, and Finding Meaning in the Burnout Crisis.

Physician burnout persists despite sustained institutional efforts to promote clinician well-being. This perspective explores art-making as a means of reclaiming agency, identity, and meaning within medical practice. Through the act of making-bringing something into existence and recognizing oneself in it-physicians may counteract key domains of burnout, including depersonalization and diminished personal accomplishment. Although art-making cannot resolve structural drivers of burnout, it offers a parallel domain in which physicians can restore self-recognition and re-engage with the human dim

Neurobiological and genetic correlates of the dissociative subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Approximately 10%-30% of individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exhibit a dissociative subtype of the condition defined by symptoms of depersonalization and derealization. This study examined the psychometric evidence for the dissociative subtype of PTSD in a sample of young, primarily male post-9/11-era Veterans (n = 374 at baseline and n = 163 at follow-up) and evaluated its biological correlates with respect to resting state functional connectivity (default mode network [DMN]; n = 275), brain morphology (hippocampal subfield volume and cortical thickness; n = 280), neurocogni

Assessment of Resident Burnout After Formalization of Wellness Program.

INTRODUCTION: Burnout has reached epidemic levels among resident physicians. Characterized by emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization, and feelings of inefficacy, burnout negatively affects patient outcomes, increases costs, and decreases physician quality of life. These negative outcomes catalyze leaders in graduate medical education to address burnout and reverse its trends. The primary aim of this project is to design a residency Wellness Program utilizing the facets of physician wellness, assess levels of burnout among resident physicians, and determine the program's effects on burnou

An exploratory structural equation modeling bi-factor analytic approach to uncovering what burnout, depression, and anxiety scales measure.

In this study, we addressed the ongoing debate about what burnout and depression scales measure by conducting an exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) bifactor analysis. A sample of 734 U.S. teachers completed a survey that included the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D-10), the depression module of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7), and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), which contains emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and (diminished) personal accomplishment (PA) subscales. Risk of burnout in perioperative clinicians: a survey study and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Burnout can lead to health and psychologic problems and is apparently increasing in physicians and nurses. Previous studies have not evaluated all healthcare workers within a single work unit. This study evaluates the risk of burnout in all medical personnel in one perioperative unit. METHODS: We developed an online survey that included demographics, a modified version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey, and the Social Support and Personal Coping Survey. Survey constructs (e.g., depersonalization and health) and a global score were calculated. Larger construct
