BACKGROUND: Several lines of evidence suggest that major depressive disorder is associated with deficits in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) inhibitory neurotransmission. Transcranial magnetic stimulation represents a noninvasive technique to measure cortical inhibition. In this study, we endeavored to measure cortical inhibition in medicated patients with treatment resistant major depressive disorder (TRD), unmedicated patients with major depressive disorder, and medicated euthymic patients with a history of major depressive disorder and compare them with healthy subjects.
METHODS: Twenty-five…

This paper reports the results of two studies in a nonclinical (n=105) and primary care outpatient sample (n=110), in which Depressive Personality Disorder (DPD), Dysthymia, and depression were assessed for their distinctive relationship with perfectionism. Results from both studies found that self-reported DPD, Dysthymia, and depressive symptoms were all intercorrelated, and that DPD, Dysthymia, and depressive symptoms were correlated with three dimensions of perfectionism-Concern over Mistakes, Doubts about Actions, and Parental Criticism. In the nonclinical sample, variance in measures of D

Depressed mood and anhedonia are the main symptoms of depressive disorder. With other symptoms, it is responsible for a real break with premorbid patient's way of life. Several clinicals forms, caracterised by melancholia intensity, psychotic symptoms and cognitive troubles, must be identified to adapt treatment and to prevent patients from particular risks. The short and middle term prognosis is linked to the suicidal risk and the socioprofessionnal and familial consequences. Long term risk is the disease chronicisation, recurrence and bipolarity. The existence of other psychiatric comorbidit…

Fatigue and sleepiness (hypersomnia) are symptoms that are highly prevalent in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Individuals who complain of fatigue but do not have diagnosable depression are at a higher risk for developing MDD later in life than individuals who do not complain of fatigue. Fatigue and sleepiness also appear to be particularly difficult to treat, as they are often encountered as residual symptoms among MDD patients who have remitted following treatment with standard antidepressants. There are 3 main approaches for addressing fatigue and sleepiness in depression: fi…

We report a case of 35-year old female patient with recurrent depressive disorder and Cushing's syndrome. MRI of the brain revealed a microadenoma of the pituitary gland. After neurosurgery the serum levels of cortisol went back to normal and the clinical and mental state of the patient improved rapidly. Depressive episodes require additional diagnostics to exclude somatic etiology.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to examine the hypotheses that major depression is aetiologically heterogeneous consisting of a mixture of 'genetic' and 'non-genetic' forms or, alternatively, a mixture of one form that is 'pure' depression and another that has a familial relationship with alcohol dependency or other disorders.
METHOD: One hundred and eleven twin pairs (44 monozygotic, 67 dizygotic) where the proband had received treatment for DSM-IV major depression were ascertained via a hospital register. Family history information on parents and siblings was obtained from the proband, co-twin or both

OBJECTIVE: To test a priori hypotheses that miscarrying women are at increased risk for a first or recurrent episode of major depressive disorder in the 6 months following loss and that this increased risk is greater for childless women, women with prior reproductive loss, and women aged 35 years or older; and to evaluate whether risk varies by time of gestation or by attitude toward the pregnancy.
DESIGN: Cohort study.
SETTING: The miscarriage cohort consisted of women attending a medical center for a spontaneous abortion (n=229); the comparison group was a population-based cohort of women …

All night EEG sleep recordings were compared in patients with dysthymia and major depressive disorder. Subjects were selected according to DSM-IV and underwent 2 weeks of treatment with placebo before the sleep evaluations. All patients with major depressive disorder were classified as nonmelancholic and belonged to the recurrent subtype, without full interepisode recovery. Patients with major depressive disorder have a shorter duration of total sleep time, a longer sleep latency and a lower sleep efficiency. However, similar sleep architecture and REM sleep characteristics were found in the t…

BACKGROUND: The contrast avoidance model (CAM) proposes that persons with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are sensitive to sharp increases in negative emotion or decreases in positive emotion (i.e., negative emotional contrasts; NEC) and use worry to avoid NEC. Sensitivity to and avoidance of NEC could also be a shared feature of major depressive disorder (MDD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD).
METHODS: In a large college sample (N = 1409), we used receiver operating characteristics analysis to examine the accuracy of a measure of emotional contrast avoidance in detecting probable GAD, MD…

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder, a highly prevalent mental health condition, can be challenging to treat.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterize treatment patterns within and across multiple major depressive episodes in patients receiving treatment for major depressive disorder.
METHODS: Adults with newly diagnosed major depressive disorder and one or more major depressive episodes were identified using the IBM® MarketScan® Commercial database. Eligible patients had 12 months of continuous enrollment before and after diagnosis. Lines of therapy were periods of continuous treatment with on…

BACKGROUND: The amygdala, as a crucial brain region, plays a key role in processing emotions and cognitive information. Given that patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder II (BD II) experience cognitive impairments, accurate diagnosis becomes a vital research focus. Consequently, we conducted an in-depth investigation into the relationship between the static volume of the amygdala and cognitive functions, aiming to provide valuable insights for future research in this field.
METHODS: We collected a total of 42 treatment-naive MDD patients, 38 BD II patients, and 46 …

OBJECTIVES: To determine the correlations between eating disorder symptoms and clinical and psychometric characteristics of major depressive disorder (MDD).
METHODS: Patients aged 18 to 59 years diagnosed with MDD, regardless of the stage (exacerbation or remission), were recruited from both outpatient and inpatient settings across seven centres in Russia. The MDD diagnosis of each patient was confirmed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Depression severity was assessed using the clinician-administered Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale. Disordered eating behaviou…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this narrative review, we discuss evidence for psilocybin- and LSD-assisted treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). We describe limitations of psychedelic research and posit methodological considerations when designing a trial in patients with both disorders.
RECENT FINDINGS: In AUD, a growing evidence base for psilocybin treatment shows a promising beneficial and sustained effect on measures of drinking frequency. In MDD, a recent meta-analysis has demonstrated that psilocybin therapy provides a large and consistent reduction in depr…

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are two highly prevalent disorders that frequently co-occur. Prior evidence from genetic and cohort studies supports an association between ADHD and MDD. However, the direction and mechanisms underlying their association remain unclear. As onset of ADHD occurs in early life, it has been hypothesized that ADHD may cause MDD.
METHODS: We examined the association of ADHD with MDD using 3 different genetically informed methods to disentangle causality from confounding: 1) a nationwide longitudinal regi…

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) show reduced fractional anisotropy (FA) compared to patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Little is known about whether these differences are mood state-independent or influenced by acute symptom severity. Therefore, the aim of this study was (1) to replicate abnormalities in white matter microstructure in BD v. MDD and (2) to investigate whether these vary across depressed, euthymic, and manic mood.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional diffusion tensor imaging study, n = 136 patients with BD were compared to age- and sex-matched MDD patien…
