Association between Diet and Seborrheic Dermatitis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Current treatments for seborrheic dermatitis provide only temporary relief. Therefore, identifying modifiable lifestyle factors may help reduce disease burden. The objective of this study was to determine whether specific dietary patterns or total antioxidant capacity are associated with seborrheic dermatitis. Participants of the Rotterdam Study with a skin examination and a food frequency questionnaire were included. Total antioxidant capacity was assessed on the basis of ferric reducing antioxidant potential of each food item. Dietary patterns were identified with principal component analysi

Treatment of Seborrheic Dermatitis Using a Novel Herbal-based Cream.

Objective: Seborrheic dermatitis is a common relapsing inflammatory skin condition occurring in approximately 3 to 5 percent of the general population. Current available therapies control, but do not cure seborrhea. The study's objective was to determine the safety and efficacy of a barrier-based, nonsteroidal cream incorporating herbal extracts as a treatment for facial seborrheic dermatitis. Design: Interventional, open label, safety/efficacy study. Setting: At the baseline visit, the investigator selected a target area on the face. The target area was evaluated for Investigator Static Globa

[Cutaneous myiasis due to Cochliomyia hominivorax associated with seborrheic dermatitis].

Myiasis is an infestation of tissues and organs of humans and animals by Diptera larvae (flies, horseflies, mosquitoes). They are located at different body sites, and classified clinically as cutaneous, visceral and cavitary. We report a 26-year-old woman with a history of seborrheic dermatitis and recent trip to Brazil. She presented with a seven days history of suppurating wounds in the parieto-occipital area of the scalp. At physical examination we found three ulcers of approximately 1.5 cm each, with multiple mobile larvae inside. The obtained larvae were analyzed, identifying Cochliomyia

Seborrheic dermatitis treatment with stellate ganglion block: a case report.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic recurrent inflammatory disorder presumed to be caused by increased sebaceous gland secretion, metabolic changes in the cutaneous microflora, and changes in the host immune function. Stellate ganglion block (SGB) is known to increase the blood flow rate without altering the blood pressure, heart rate, or cardiac output, to stabilize hypertonic conditions of the sympathetic nerves, and to affect the endocrine and immune systems. It is used in the differential diagnosis and treatment of autonomic nervous system disorders of the head, neck, and upper limbs. The a

Maintenance Therapy of Facial Seborrheic Dermatitis with 0.1% Tacrolimus Ointment.

BACKGROUND: Topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs) have been successfully used to treat seborrheic dermatitis (SD) patients. Meanwhile, treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) with low-dose, intermittent TCI has been proved to reduce disease flare-ups. This regimen is known as a maintenance treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this trial was to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of a maintenance treatment with tacrolimus ointment in patients with facial SD. METHODS: During the initial stabilization period, patients with facial SD or AD applied 0.1% tacrolimus ointment twice daily for up to 4 w

Seborrheic dermatitis: etiology, risk factors, and treatments: facts and controversies.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common skin condition seen frequently in clinical practice. The use of varying terms such as sebopsoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, seborrheic eczema, dandruff, and pityriasis capitis reflects the complex nature of this condition. Despite its frequency, much controversy remains regarding the pathogenesis of SD. This controversy extends to its classification in the spectrum of cutaneous diseases, having being classified as a form of dermatitis, a fungal disease, or an inflammatory disease, closely related with psoriasis. Some have postulated that SD is caused by M

Scalp seborrheic dermatitis: prevalence and associated factors in male adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of seborrheic dermatitis (SD) in the general population is variable in the literature. Factors associated with SD are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To verify the prevalence of scalp SD in a selected survey of male adolescents on mandatory military service and to find possible associated factors (skin color, socioeconomic level, triceps skin fold, acne, and tobacco consumption). METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 18-year-old male adolescents on compulsory military service in a southern Brazilian city. Scalp SD was considered as erythema and scaling in an

Adult seborrheic dermatitis: a status report on practical topical management.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common chronic-recurrent inflammatory disorder that most commonly affects adults; however, a more transient infantile form also occurs. The definitive cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown. However, proliferation of Malassezia species has been described as a contributing factor. The adult form of seborrheic dermatitis affects up to approximately five percent of the general population. The disorder commonly affects the scalp, face, and periauricular region, with the central chest, axillae, and genital region also involved in some cases. Pruritus is not always pres

[Seborrheic dermatitis--clinical diagnosis and therapeutic value of different drugs].

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a disease characterized by erythema and accompanied by greasy scale in the seborrheic region. The mechanism by which the disease occurs is still unknown. The genus Malassezia is involved in aggravating SD. Objective diagnosis of SD has yet been established. Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis or contact dermatitis are often confused with SD. One method to differentiate SD from other skin diseases is direct microscopic examination. Mild corticosteroids are effective in treatment of this condition, although, many cases recur within a few days. Antifungal agents are also

Seborrheic dermatitis and atopic eczema in human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Diseases of the skin and visible mucous membranes are important signs of HIV infection. Dermatitis and eczema present mostly as seborrheic dermatitis. Thirty-one % of asymptomatic patients in seropositive latency period and up to 83% of AIDS patients present with this common symptom of HIV infection. Up to now there is no clear answer about the importance of atopic manifestations in AIDS. In children with pediatric AIDS, atopic eczema has been described in up to 50% of cases. In adult patients however there are contradictory results about the frequency of atopic diseases.

Double-blind treatment of seborrheic dermatitis with 2% ketoconazole cream.

Thirty-seven patients with seborrheic dermatitis were treated topically with a 2% ketoconazole cream or its vehicle control in a double-blind study. The subjects were studied for numbers of Malassezia ovalis (Pityrosporum ovale) cells in their scalp scale; changes in numbers of yeast cells and morphology of M. ovalis were tabulated along with clinical assessment of improvement. The 2% ketoconazole cream, but not the placebo cream, reduced the numbers of viable yeast cells on the scalp. The clinical effect of 2% ketoconazole cream was good (75%-95% improvement) or better in eighteen of twenty s

Clinical Severity and Outcome Measures in Seborrheic Dermatitis: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common chronic inflammatory dermatosis associated with substantial symptom burden and impaired quality of life. Despite increasing interest in development of advanced therapies for SD, standardization of outcome measures appears limited. We sought to understand how disease severity, symptoms, and quality of life are measured in seborrheic dermatitis clinical studies. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of clinical studies (both interventional and observational) assessing SD severity and treatment response. Eligible studies were identified th

Overlapping mycoses in a case of Seborrheic dermatitis with coexistent Malassezia folliculitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition likely caused by several factors, including overgrowth of the lipophilic yeast Malassezia, increased sebaceous gland activity, and a potential genetic predisposition, whereas Malassezia folliculitis (MF) is a fungal infection of hair follicles. In this case, a 22-year-old male initially presented with erythematous papules on the malar region and was clinically diagnosed with SD. Following partial improvement with topical and oral antifungals, the patient developed new pustular lesions involving the malar and chin regions, rais

Evaluation of epicardial fat tissue thickness in patients with seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disease that primarily affects the scalp, face, and body folds. Recent studies have shown that seborrheic dermatitis may be associated with inflammation and cardiometabolic conditions. We aimed to investigate this relationship in our study. Fifty patients with seborrheic dermatitis who came to the dermatology outpatient clinic and completely healthy patients in a similar age group were included in the study. Echocardiographic findings and heart rates of the patient and control groups were recorded on previously prepared forms. The mean epicar

Current Understanding of Seborrheic Dermatitis: Epidemiology, Burden of Disease, and Pathophysiology.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common chronic dermatosis predominantly affecting sebum-rich areas. The diagnosis of seborrheic dermatitis can be challenging due to its clinical resemblance to other dermatoses. Seborrheic dermatitis can significantly impact quality of life, particularly in those with pruritus and dyspigmentation involving the facial region. The pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis is complex, and while its etiology is not yet fully understood, current evidence points to a complex interplay between 3 key factors: skin microbiome dysbiosis involving Malassezia spp. overgrowth and al
