PURPOSE: This study aimed to ascertain the impact of topical breast milk and diaper-area care instruction on the prevention of diaper dermatitis in rural settings.
DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a pre-test-post-test experimental study with forty-eight 6-18-month-old children and their mothers. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups: two experimental groups (Group A: breast milk, Group B: education) and one control group (Group C). Data were collected face-to-face through home-visits. A sociodemographic data and diaper-area care practices form and The Scale for Assessing the Severit

AIM: Prolonged diaper dermatitis may increase the risk of atopic dermatitis or infections. This prospective observational study aimed to investigate the prevalence, symptoms, areas, and recovery time of diaper dermatitis in infants aged 1 month and identify the factors related to recovery time.
METHODS: Diaper dermatitis was defined as the presence of erythema, papules, dryness, erosion, or ulceration in the diapered area. Recovery time was days between infant's 1-month medical check-up and disappearance of symptoms. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the log-r

OBJECTIVE: To design an instrument to measure impairment of skin integrity in the diaper area of infants and severity of injury for the prevention and management of irritative diaper dermatitis.
METHODOLOGY: Design in 3 phases: 1) comprehensive review and critical appraisal of literature to design the preliminary content of the instrument; 2) critical evaluation of initial proposal by an expert group (nursing and pediatric medicine) with opinion survey and ad hoc questions; 3) content analysis using data tabulation for the modification and final design of the instrument.
SETTING: Primary Car

Irritant napkin dermatitis (IND, often referred to as irritant diaper dermatitis) is an exceedingly common problem in the first 2 years of life. It is now established that a number of factors are considered important in the etiology of IND. The principal irritants are fecal enzymes, which damage infant skin and are further amplified by a number of factors, including skin maceration and friction, high pH, the presence of urine, and the duration of contact with feces. In recent years, the decreasing incidence and severity of IND reflects improvements in the design and performance of diapers, dia

Most babies are likely to get nappy rash at some time. It's usually a mild condition which can easily be treated, but understandably is a cause for concern to parents. Community healthcare professionals are likely to be asked for advice and this article aims to give a practical overview of managing mild cases of nappy rash.

The perineal groove is a rare congenital anomaly of the perineum. We present a case of this uncommon condition that had been misinterpreted as irritant dermatitis following treatment for diaper rash. To our knowledge this is the first report of this condition is the dermatology literature.

Activation of the alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAchR) is regulated by prion protein (PrPC) expression and has a neuroprotective effect by modulating autophagic flux. In this study, we hypothesized that PrPC may regulate α7nAchR activation and that may prevent prion-related neurodegenerative diseases by regulating autophagic flux. PrP(106-126) treatment decreased α7nAchR expression and activation of autophagic flux. In addition, the α7nAchR activator PNU-282987 enhanced autophagic flux and protected neuron cells against PrP(106-126)-induced apoptosis. However, activation of autoph

Nappy rash affects most babies at some stage. It can occur at any time during the nappy-wearing years, but reaches a peak between 7 and 12 months. Nappy rash causes discomfort to babies and distress to mothers, who often feel guilty and ill-prepared for this problem. Keeping the nappy area dry is the most important factor in prevention and treatment. Recommend frequent changes of nappy and leaving the area uncovered when possible. Thrush is present in many cases of nappy rash. Keeping the area dry deprives thrush of the opportunity to thrive.
