Assessment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy using diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging parameter at 3.0 tesla.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVE: To assess spinal cord condition in patients with cervical spondylosis (CS), using diffusion tensor imaging parameter. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although myelopathy is a common symptom after CS, clinically objective assessment for determination of surgical intervention is not straightforward. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with CS and 30 normal control subjects were enrolled. Diffusion tensor imaging was obtained using a single-shot fast spin-echo-based sequence at 3.0 T. Mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) were measured in the

The role of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the classification of hepatic hydatid cysts.

The aim of the study was to classify different types of hepatic hydatid cysts (HHCs) by measuring the mean apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI). This prospective study comprised 44 patients. The 44 HHCs were classified using Gharbi ultrasonographic classification (GUC) and then T2WIs and DWIs were obtained. The ADC values were measured of the hydatid cyst (HC) subtypes. The distribution of the ADC values in the cyst groups was compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test for multi groups and the Mann-Whitney U test for paired groups. To evalu

Surfer's myelopathy-demonstrated by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging: a case report and literature review.

The authors present a case of "surfer's myelopathy," a rarely described syndrome characterized by nontraumatic paraparesis/paraplegia in novice surfers and theorized to result from spinal cord ischemia secondary to surfing-related positional hyperextension. Imaging and clinical course of the youngest known affected individual are discussed, including evidence of acute spinal cord infarction on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, a finding not previously described in the literature.

Clinical value of whole-body magnetic resonance diffusion weighted imaging on detection of malignant metastases.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of whole-body diffusion weighted imaging (WB-DWI) on detection of malignant metastasis. METHODS: Forty-six patients with malignant tumors underwent WB-DWI examinations between April 2007 and August 2007 in our hospital. Before WB-DWI examination, the primary cancers of all the patients were confirmed by pathology, and the TNM-stage was assessed with conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT). WB-DWI was performed using short TI inversion recovery echo-planar imaging (STIR-EPI) sequence. Abnormal high signal intensities on WB-DWI

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate major salivary gland function before and after radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate diffusion-weighted (DW)-MRI as a noninvasive tool to investigate major salivary gland function before and after radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC). METHODS AND MATERIALS: DW-MRI was performed in 8 HNC patients before and after parotid-sparing RT (mean dose to the contralateral parotid gland <26 Gy). A DW sequence was performed once at rest and then repeated continuously during salivary stimulation. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps for both parotid and submandibular glands were calculated. Findings were compared with salivary gland scintigraphy. RES

Clinical significance of detection of multiple acute brain infarcts on diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Detection of multiple acute brain infarcts (MABI) by diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) may provide information about stroke mechanism in (1) acute lacunar stroke, where evidence of MABI suggests a cause other than small artery disease (SAD), such as embolism or vasculitis (type 1 MABI); or (2) acute non-lacunar stroke, where MABI in the territory of at least two of the aortic branches supplying the brain indicates the presence of aortic or cardiac embolism rather than artery to artery embolism (type 2 MABI). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of MABI and their

Age dependence of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging findings in maple syrup urine disease encephalopathy.

A patient with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) who developed encephalopathy twice and underwent magnetic resonance examinations, including diffusion-weighted (DW) imaging, is presented. Areas of abnormal intensity on DW images dramatically differed between the initial and second attacks, apparently attributable to the difference in myelination. Our observation demonstrates the age dependence of DW imaging findings in MSUD encephalopathy attributable to progression of myelination and would help in the proper diagnosis of MSUD encephalopathy at any age.

White matter damage in Alzheimer's disease assessed in vivo using diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the extent and the nature of white matter tissue damage of patients with Alzheimer's disease using diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI). BACKGROUND: Although Alzheimer's disease pathology mainly affects cortical grey matter, previous pathological and MRI studies showed that also the brain white matter of patients is damaged. However, the nature of Alzheimer's disease associated white matter damage is still unclear. METHODS: Conventional and DT-MRI scans were obtained from 16 patients with Alzheimer's disease and 10 sex and age matched healthy volunte

[Correlation of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging with neurological deficits in sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease].

This case report describes the sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) of a 53-year-old man who initially complained about vertigo and dizziness. Within 18 weeks, he developed impaired memory, hemineglect, and sensory impairment of the left half of the body. A CSF tap was positive for 14-3-3 protein and showed increased tau protein, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and the astroglial protein S-100 B. The EEG showed right temporal sharp waves without periodicity. Diffusion-weighted MRI revealed hyperintensities in the right temporo-occipital cortex which corresponded well with hypometabolic area

Thrombolytic reversal of acute human cerebral ischemic injury shown by diffusion/perfusion magnetic resonance imaging.

Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging provides an early marker of acute cerebral ischemic injury. Thrombolytic reversal of diffusion abnormalities has not previously been demonstrated in humans. Serial diffusion and perfusion imaging studies were acquired in patients experiencing acute hemispheric cerebral ischemia treated with intra-arterial thrombolytic therapy within 6 hours of symptom onset. Seven patients met inclusion criteria of prethrombolysis and postthrombolysis magnetic resonance studies, presence of large artery anterior circulation occlusion at angiography, and achievement of vesse…

A Case of Hepatic Encephalopathy With Diffuse Brainstem Signal Changes on Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Signal changes on brain MRI have been reported in hepatic encephalopathy; however, no specific findings have been established. Moreover, cases of hepatic encephalopathy presenting with MRI signal changes confined to the brainstem are rare. A 75-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a one-day history of impaired consciousness. Blood tests revealed elevated ammonia and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels, along with positive anti-mitochondrial M2 antibodies. Brain MRI on admission demonstrated diffuse and symmetrical hyperintensity in the midbrain and pons on fluid-attenuated inversi

Magnetic resonance imaging in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis: similarities to axial spondyloarthritis.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a non-inflammatory condition that involves calcification and ossification of the spinal ligaments and entheses. While, characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lesions of the spine in patients with axial spondyloarthritis, another enthesitis-related disease, have been described and defined, there is a paucity of information regarding the MRI findings in DISH. The aim of this study was to describe the MRI findings of patients with DISH. We collected computed tomography studies with findings characteristic of DISH and that also had corres

Magnetic resonance imaging of bone marrow: diagnostic value in diffuse hematologic disorders.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has value in characterizing normal and abnormal bone marrow because of its ability to distinguish fat from other tissues. Due to this advantage, hematologic disorders resulting in alterations of the normal cellular and fatty marrow distribution can be appreciated. In this article, the role of MRI in diffuse hematologic disorders is emphasized. At birth, almost all marrow is cellular, but by age 25, cellular marrow is restricted to the axial skeleton and proximal femoral and humeral metaphysis. The remainder is fatty, consisting of 80% fat, 15% water, and 5% pro

Magnetic resonance imaging after 'diffuse' nonmissile head injury. A neurobehavioral study.

The diagnosis of diffuse brain injury is considered when computed tomography provides no evidence of an intracranial mass lesion in acute nonmissile head injury. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of a young woman who had sustained severe diffuse brain injury five years earlier disclosed multifocal lesions involving the frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes. We report the results of serial neurobehavioral assessment for clinical correlation with the brain lesions visualized by MRI. Pending confirmation of our findings in a series of patients studied by MRI during the acute and chronic
