Sperm collection is a fundamental step in the subsequent application of all assisted reproduction techniques. On the other hand, the method of sperm collection depends on the type of species and its management. Furthermore, once the semen has been collected, it is necessary to carry out a simple evaluation in order to discard those samples that cannot be used. Here, we describe the most commonly used methods for semen collection in domestic animals, mainly in small ruminants, and the principal sperm evaluation methodologies used in animal reproduction centers or under field conditions.

Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) causes sporadic and epizootic outbreaks among various domesticated and non-domesticated animal species worldwide. Although outbreaks are mostly reported in domestic pigs, mortality is reported in elephants, ungulates, nonhuman primates (NHPs), and rodents. Rats of the genus Rattus serve as primary reservoirs and vectors, but alternative infection routes have been proposed. Clinical disease is characterized by acute heart failure in most taxonomic groups, often culminating in rapid death. Due to the rapid progression of the disease, diagnostic confirmation is m

When an organism detects decreases in their core body temperature, the hypothalamus, the main thermoregulatory center, triggers compensatory responses. These responses include vasomotor changes to prevent heat loss and physiological mechanisms (e.g., shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis) for heat production. Both types of changes require the participation of peripheral thermoreceptors, afferent signaling to the spinal cord and hypothalamus, and efferent pathways to motor and/or sympathetic neurons. The present review aims to analyze the scientific evidence of the hypothalamic control of h

Industrialization and overpopulation have polluted aquatic environments with significant impacts on human health and wildlife. The main pollutants in urban sewage are nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals and organic pollutants, which need to be treated with sewage, and the use of aquatic plants to purify wastewater has high efficiency and low cost. However, the effectiveness and efficiency of phytoremediation are also affected by temperature, pH, microorganisms and other factors. The use of biochar can reduce the cost of wastewater purification, and the combination of biochar and nanotechnology

Cryptococcosis is a fungal disease of public health relevance that affects numerous animal species and humans, causing respiratory and neurological impairment. Hence, we conducted a systematic review that included publications from 1975 to 2021 and covered 132 articles that addressed reports of cryptococcosis in domestic and wild animals, its main clinical manifestations, pathological findings, etiology, diagnosis, and therapeutic protocols. We found that the highest number of reports of cryptococcosis is in domestic species, especially cats. Among the wild and/or exotic animals, koalas and fe

Embryo implantation is a complex process in which significant changes occur continually in both the corpora lutea and in the endometrium of females and which varies depending on the embryonic, pre-implantation, or fetal stages. However, at all stages, correct maternal-embryonic communication is essential. In the last few years, a new intercellular communication tool, mediated by extracellular vesicles (EVs), has emerged. Many authors agree on the relevant role of EVs in correct communication between the mother and the embryo, as a fundamental system for the pregnancy to reach term and embryoni

Use of the pig as a preclinical and translatable animal model has been well-documented and accepted by research fields investigating cardiovascular systems, gastrointestinal systems, and nutrition, and the pig is increasingly being used as a large animal model in neuroscience. Furthermore, the pig is an accepted model to study neurodevelopment as it displays brain growth and development patterns similar to what occurs in humans. As a less common animal model in neuroscience, surgical and dissection procedures on pigs may not be as familiar or well-practiced among researchers. Therefore, a stan

UNLABELLED: A 13-year-old neutered female domestic shorthair rescue cat presented asymptomatically with raised hepatic enzymes following a routine pre-anaesthetic blood test. Cholangitis was suspected, and supportive treatment with 2 weeks of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and 4 weeks of ursodeoxycholic acid and S-adenosylmethionine was trialled, with no improvement in biochemistry parameters. Clinicopathological investigations also revealed a markedly raised total bilirubin and abnormal bile acid stimulation test. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed pathological changes in the gallbladder, hepato

Though soft tissue disorders have been recognized and described to some detail in several types of domestic animals and small mammals for some years, they remain uncommon. Because of their low prevalence, not much progress has been made not only in improved diagnosis but also in our understanding of the biochemical basis and pathogenesis of these diseases in animals. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) described in dogs already in 1943 and later in cats has only minor impact on the well-being of the dog as its effects on skin of these animals are rather limited. The involved skin is thin and hyperext

A 69-year-old man was found lying on the floor at his home address. According to the police report every room was filled with refuse and "thirty or so cats" were resident in the house. The body showed signs of extensive post mortem animal predation with opening of the chest and abdominal cavities, loss of soft tissues of the face, loss of soft tissues and organs of the neck, loss of the lungs and heart, and injuries to the liver, right kidney, stomach, transverse colon and cecum. The cause of death could not be determined from the autopsy given the absence of certain vital organs such as the h

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), a disease caused by tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), represents a serious neural infection of humans in Europe and Asia. The main reservoir hosts of TBEV are ticks, rodents and insectivores, but domestic animals may also be infected with the virus. This review summarizes what is known about TBE in domestic species (e.g., dogs, horses), in which infection may manifest with clinical signs similar to those seen in severe human cases. We also focus on TBE in ruminants where TBE infections are typically asymptomatic and do not cause health problems in the infecte

Leptospirosis is a worldwide-distributed, re-emerging zoonosis due to the large variety of wild and domestic animal species that can play the role of natural or accidental host. Currently, specific animal species play an important role as the reservoir for particular Leptospira serovars, although recent investigations have highlighted new host-pathogen interactions involved in Leptospira epidemiology. Furthermore, the constant modification of ecosystems and wildlife habitats and the constantly increasing number of animal species moving towards urban or peri-urban areas are increasing the possi

Myiasis is an infestation caused by larvae of Diptera in humans and other vertebrates. In domestic cats, Felis silvestris catus L. (Carnivora: Felidae), four dipteran families have been reported as agents of obligatory and facultative myiasis: Oestridae, Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae and Muscidae. Among agents of obligatory myiasis, the most frequent genus is Cuterebra Clark (Oestridae) and the most frequent species is Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Calliphoridae). Among the agents of facultative myiasis, the most frequent species is Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Calliphoridae). A survey of m

This study describes the domestic-setting corpses that remain unnoticed for two weeks or more. It compares the occurrence of this phenomenon in the city of Amsterdam with the surrounding municipalities of Amsterdam (SMA). Data of 437 cases were extracted from the forensic medical register of Amsterdam. Data of size and household situation of the population were extracted from Statistics Netherlands. A 3.7 (95%CI 2.8-4.9) times higher incidence rate, was observed in the city of Amsterdam (n = 379; 5.3/100,000 personyears) compared to the SMA (n = 58; 1.4/100,000 personyears). All but three case

OBJECTIVE: To search the literature for evidence of a relationship between domestic violence and constipation.
METHODS: An integrative review was conducted using the six-step approach and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). We examined articles published between 2005 and 2015 investigating the correlation between domestic violence and constipation. The search was performed in September and October of 2015 in PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science. The selection of articles was performed in three stages: search, pre-selection, and inclusion.

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne zoonotic disease caused by protozoa in the genus Leishmania, typical of rural and peri-urban environments. The causative agent of American visceral leishmaniasis is Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi and the main insect vector in Brazil is Lutzomyia longipalpis. Dogs (Canis familiaris) are important in the transmission of the disease, as a reservoir closely related to humans and an infection source for phlebotomine vectors. Since 1990, an increasing number of feline leishmaniasis cases have been reported, suggesting that domestic cats (Felis catus) might b

A retrospective study was carried out by reviewing all suspected cases of domestic animal poisoning attributed to pesticides, reported to the Milan Poison Control Centre (MPCC) between January 2011 and December 2013. During this period, pesticides were found to be responsible for 37.3% of all suspected poisoning enquiries received (815). The most commonly species involved was the dog (71.1% of calls) followed by the cat (15.8%), while a limited number of cases involved horses, goats and sheep. Most cases of exposure (47.1%) resulted in mild to moderate clinical signs. The outcome was reported
