The Use of Cannabis-Based Medicine in Selected Neurological Disorders.

Cannabis-based medicine (CBM) is used in a wide variety of different neurological disorders. While the use of CBM in the treatment of pain, AIDS wasting, loss of appetite, and spasticity is well established, CBM application in movement disorders and neurodegenerative disorders is still an emerging topic. The purpose of this chapter is to summarize current evidence behind the use of CBM in selected neurological diseases, mainly movement and neurodegenerative disorders. The best evidence for efficacy of CBM is for Tourette syndrome resulting in an improvement of tics and psychiatric comorbiditie

An Assessment of Marketing Strategies Used by Online Shops Selling Hemp-Derived Delta-8 Products.

INTRODUCTION: Delta-8 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has become increasingly popular in the United States. Many online stores sell Delta-8 THC products, yet little is known about how they are marketed to consumers. METHODS: We selected a sample of popular Delta-8 online stores, captured them on one day, and coded their main pages for marketing and advertising strategies. The primary marketing strategies coded for were grouped into four main themes: 1) product claims; 2) engagement strategies; 3) user testimonials and other information; and 4) regulations and warnings. Descriptive statistics were

Potency trends of cannabis in Jamaica during the period of 2014 to 2020.

Reports suggest that cannabis potency has dramatically increased over the last decade in the USA and Europe. Cannabinoids are the terpeno-phenolic compounds found in the cannabis plant and are responsible for its pharmacological activity. The two most prominent cannabinoids are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9 THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Cannabis potency is measured not only by the Δ9 THC levels but also by the ratio of Δ9 THC to other non-psychoactive cannabinoids, namely, CBD. Cannabis use was decriminalized in Jamaica in 2015, which opened the gates for the creation of a regulated medical c

Quality test of cannabidiol profiling in CBD oil products and evaluation of residual THC at high temperature based on liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry.

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil products are available in Japan as cosmetics, fragrances, food and items. Herein, quality testing of cannabinoid profiling in CBD oil products and the evaluation of possible residual tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in these products using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was conducted. A simple, sensitive, and selective LC-MS/MS assay (electrospray positive ion mode) was employed for the simultaneous quantification of eight cannabinoids. This quantification with three different oil samples showed that accuracy rates ranged from 87.7 to 106.9% (RSD > 3.

Influence of structural characteristics on the binding of synthetic cannabinoids from the JWH family to the CB1 receptor: A computational study.

Synthetic cannabinoids, including some from the John W. Huffman (JWH) family, emerged on the drug scene around 2004 as "alternative marijuana," despite being considerably more potent than marijuana. Like Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the principal psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, synthetic cannabinoids have also been found to interact with cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, found in the brain, immune system, and peripheral organs. The JWH compounds and other synthetic cannabinoids have become important subjects of research in the forensic science community due to their drug-abuse potenti

Cannabinoids Tetrahydrocannabinol, Cannabinol, Cannabidiol, Tetrahydrocannabivarin and 11-nor-9-carboxy-∆9-THC in Hair.

The cannabinoids tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN) and (-)-11-nor-9-carboxy-∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-COOH) were determined in 4,773 hair samples. Confirmation of THC-COOH was by GC-MS-MS (gas chromatography--mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry). Confirmation of THC, THCV, CBN and CBD was by LC-MS-MS (liquid chromatoraphy--mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry) on an AB Sciex QTRAP 6500+ LC-MS-MS. The purpose of this work was not to utilize any analyte other than THC-COOH as indicative of ingestion, but to assess the absence or pres

Cannabinoids for Symptom Management in Patients with Kidney Failure: A Narrative Review.

People with kidney failure can experience a range of symptoms that lead to suffering and poor quality of life. Available therapies are limited, and evidence for new treatment options is sparse, often resulting in incomplete relief of symptoms. There is growing interest in the potential for cannabinoids, including cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol, to treat symptoms across a wide range of chronic diseases. As legal prohibitions are withdrawn or minimized in many jurisdictions, patients are increasingly able to access these agents. Cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2, are widely expressed in t

Discrepancies between validated GC-FID and UHPLC-DAD methods for the analysis of Δ-9-THC and CBD in dried hemp flowers.

Herbal products for smoking containing cannabidiol (CBD) are available as "low-tetrahydrocannabinol cannabis products" in most EU countries. In Belgium, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of these products must be less than 0.2% w/w, which is also the limit for agricultural hemp. For agricultural hemp, the official and only valid method for European regulators is gas-chromatography coupled to flame ionization detector (GC-FID). There is no such method, for smoking products. Many of these herbal for smoking products are analyzed as part of their quality control and have certificate of analys

Selective Cytotoxicity of Medical Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) Extracts Across the Whole Vegetation Cycle Under Various Hydroponic and Nutritional Treatments.

Introduction: The use of Cannabis sativa L. in health care requires stringent care for the optimal production of the bioactive compounds. However, plant phenotypes and the content of secondary metabolites, such as phytocannabinoids, are strongly influenced by external factors, such as nutrient availability. It has been shown that phytocannabinoids can exhibit selective cytotoxicity against various cancer cell lines while protecting healthy tissue from apoptosis. Research Aim: This study aimed to clarify the cytotoxic effect of cannabis extracts on colorectal cell lines by identifying the main

Clinical effects of a single dose of cannabinoids to patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

This phase II clinical trial investigates a one-time oromucosal dose of tetrahydrocannabinol/cannabidiol (THC/CBD) in 23 patients with indolent leukemic B cell lymphomas. Primary endpoint was a significant reduction in leukemic B cells. Grade 1 - 2 adverse events were seen in 91% of the patients; most common were dry mouth (78%), vertigo (70%), and somnolence (43%). After THC/CBD a significant reduction in leukemic B cells (median, 11%) occurred within two hours (p = .014), and remained for 6 h without induction of apoptosis or proliferation. Normal B cells and T cells were also reduced. CXCR4

Perceptions about THC and CBD effects among adults with and without prior cannabis experience.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is associated with a range of therapeutic and non-therapeutic, positive and negative effects. While some benefits and harms may be specific to individual cannabinoid constituents (THC, CBD), individual expectancies may also play a role. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the extent to which individuals hold expectancies about the effects of CBD, THC, and THC & CBD combined, and whether this differs with prior cannabis experience. METHODS: Canadian adults (N = 345; n = 58 no prior cannabis use, n = 287 prior cannabis use) completed a Qualtrics survey. Participants provided information

A comparative analysis of laws on recreational cannabis edibles between Canada and the United States of America.

BACKGROUND: The Canadian government has amended the Cannabis Act and Cannabis Regulations to legalize use of recreational cannabis edibles. Besides Canada, the United States of America (U.S.A.) is the only other country with experience regulating cannabis edibles, albeit at the state-level. Because of the potential health risks associated with consuming THC, we sought to compare laws (within Canada and the U.S. states that have legalized the recreational use of cannabis edible) that govern THC-infused cannabis edibles; and to identify any associated gaps in Canada's cannabis regulatory framewo

The Effectiveness of Cannabis and Cannabis Derivatives in Treating Lower Back Pain in the Aged Population: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cannabis is increasingly used in the management of pain, though minimal research exists to support its use since approval. Reduction in stigma has led to a growing interest in pharmaceutical cannabinoids as a possible treatment for lower back pain (LBP). The objective of this review was to assess the role and efficacy of cannabis and its derivatives in the management of LBP and compile global data related to the role of cannabis in the management of LBP in an aging population. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using predetermined keywords by 3 independent researchers

Oral Administration of Cannabis and Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) Preparations: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Changes in cannabis legalization regimes in several countries have influenced the diversification of cannabis use. There is an ever-increasing number of cannabis forms available, which are gaining popularity for both recreational and therapeutic use. From a therapeutic perspective, oral cannabis containing Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) is a promising route of administration but there is still little information about its pharmacokinetics (PK) effects in humans. The purpose of this systematic review is to provide a general overview of the availab

An Analysis of Over-the-Counter Cannabidiol Products in the United Kingdom.

Introduction: Over-the-counter cannabidiol (CBD) products have seen unprecedented recent growth in the United Kingdom. However, analysis of these predominantly unregulated products from other countries tells us that they are often mislabeled or contain unlabeled and potentially dangerous chemicals. Thus, the aim of the present study was to analyze CBD oils available in the United Kingdom. Materials and Methods: Phytocannabinoids, residual solvent, and heavy metals were measured blinded in 29 widely available CBD products by an independent testing facility using high-performance liquid chromato

Cannabis: are there any benefits?

Cannabis has been used as a medicine for millennia. Prohibition in the mid-20th century precluded early scientific investigation. 'Cannabis' describes three separate forms - herbal cannabis, 'hemp' products, pharmaceutical-grade regulated cannabinoid-based medical products (CBMP). In Australia, CBMP became available for prescription in November 2016. Herbal cannabis with Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is illegal, and cannabidiol (CBD) in herbal extracts, are both unregulated and unreliable sources of cannabinoids. The endocannabinoid system (ECS), delineated in the late 1990s, has increa

Deaths in traffic accidents associated with THC abuse.

From the National Registry of autopsies and toxicology examinations, we selected the deceased for 2015, 2016, 2017 and January 2018 active road accident participants, i.e. pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicle drivers. From these, we further selected those who were tested for THC presence. Of the 836 deceased active road accident participants, only 251 (i.e. 30%) were tested for cannabinoids, most often passenger car drivers, 46 percent. Of the 251 people tested, THC was demonstrated in 12 (4.8%), most commonly motorcycle drivers (7.8%) and passenger car drivers (3.4%). Of the 12 positive pe
