Objective This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations on treating patients who present with dysphonia, which is characterized by altered vocal quality, pitch, loudness, or vocal effort that impairs communication and/or quality of life. Dysphonia affects nearly one-third of the population at some point in its life. This guideline applies to all age groups evaluated in a setting where dysphonia would be identified or managed. It is intended for all clinicians who are likely to diagnose and treat patients with dysphonia. Purpose The primary purpose of this guideline is to improve the q…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent advances with regard to occupational voice disorders are highlighted with emphasis on issues warranting consideration when assessing, training, and treating professional voice users.
RECENT FINDINGS: Findings include the many particularities between the various categories of professional voice users, the concept that the environment plays a major role in occupational voice disorders, and that biopsychosocial influences should be analyzed on an individual basis. Assessment via self-evaluation protocols to quantify the impact of these disorders is mandatory as a compon

OBJECTIVES: The human voice provides extensive information about the speaker, in addition to the intended linguistic message. Therefore, voice is an essential component in the process of forming an initial attitude toward the speaker. People with communication disorders are typically judged by listeners more negatively than those speaking normally. This trend, however, was not reported consistently regarding voice disorders. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine listeners' attitude toward dysphonic speakers. In addition, the impact of speaker's and listener's gender on these attitude

The number of studies reporting the benefit of angiogenesis inhibition is steadily increasing. Anti-angiogenic drugs, used as monotherapy or in association with chemotherapy, have been shown to benefit patients with several different malignancies. Despite the benefits of these therapies, however, each drug has different side effects. This review is specifically focused on analyzing the frequency of one of the complications the most frequently overlooked by physicians, dysphonia. Perhaps this side effect is overlooked because it is not life-threatening, but dysphonia may nevertheless affect qua…

Glucocorticosteroid injections into the shoulder are commonly used in the treatment of rotator cuff tendinitis. These injections rarely result in any serious complications and are generally considered a safe therapeutic intervention. Despite the extensive application of this treatment, there have been no reports of dysphonia occurring after corticosteroid injection into the subacromial space. We report the case of a 66-yr-old man with dysphonia after undergoing subacromial glucocorticosteroid injection for treatment of rotator cuff tendinitis.

The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that there is a relation between nonorganic habitual dysphonia and subjective experience of dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (neurovegetative lability). Eighty-three patients (65 women and 18 men) with a nonorganic voice disorder and a matched control group answered a questionnaire of 46 questions. One question replicated in different terms and six nonrelevant questions point out that the inquiry forms were answered in a consistent way. It appears that female patients in all age categories with a nonorganic habitual dysphonia rep…

The evaluation of perceptual symptoms is one of the mainstays in the diagnostic workup of adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD). The most widely used perceptual rating system is the GRBAS scale. However, with this system, not all audible features of ADSD can be described. Therefore, we extended the GRBAS system by 6 parameters. The aim of this study was assessment of the perceptual characteristics of ADSD with the "extended" GRBAS system and evaluation of its reproducibility. Seventy-seven patients were scored independently by 3 experienced observers quantifying the voice sound profile. Cluster …

We report the successful treatment of three patients with adduction spasmodic dysphonia by direct injection of botulinum toxin into the vocal cord(s). This was achieved under electromyographic control, and this and other otolaryngeal techniques were used to monitor treatment and study this often puzzling condition.

Transcutaneous Teflon augmentation of the vocal cord was performed 21 times in 19 patients with unilateral vocal cord paralysis. The larynx was visualized using flexible fiberoptic video-endoscopy and, after local anesthesia to the skin over the cricothyroid membrane, an 18-gauge 2-inch needle was introduced through the cricothyroid membrane. Under fiberoptic visualization, the needle was inserted into the paralyzed vocal cord through its undersurface. Teflon was injected with a syringe to produce medialization of the vocal cord. The position of the vocal cord and voice quality were monitored

Twenty-two patients with a diagnosis of spastic dysphonia were treated by laryngeal nerve crush. All patients had initial improvement. Success at 3-year follow-up was 13%. Laryngeal nerve crush is no longer advocated as treatment for spastic dysphonia.

Case history and voice data for 17 patients who presented with intermittent moments of breathy dysphonia (IBD) in contextual speech were analyzed. From recorded samples of vowel prolongation four variants of phonation were identified. Of 13 patients examined neurologically, 10 (77%) had positive neurologic signs. Psychiatric and physical illnesses were often associated with onset of the voice disorder. Sex ratio of the patients in this study was nearly the same as that for adductor spastic dysphonia. Age at onset was similar to that which has been described for "functional" voice disorders. Di…
