[Schistosomiasis control in Jiangxi Province based on the One Health concept: practices and prospects].

Schistosomiasis was once highly prevalent in Jiangxi Province, and currently, the schistosomiasis control program is moving from transmission interruption to elimination in this province. As a zoonotic parasitic disease, schistosomiasis transmission is closely linked to human activities, animal hosts, Oncomelania snail distribution, and ecological environmental changes, which highly aligns with the One Health concept. Based on the One Health concept, this paper systematically reviews the evolution and major strategies of schistosomiasis control programs in Jiangxi Province, summarizes practica

Seasonal dynamics and natural detachment of epiphytic green algae on aquaculture rafts in the Subei Shoal, China: Implications for early green tide formation.

Green tides have become a recurring ecological problem in the Yellow Sea, yet early-stage processes governing algal biomass supply remain poorly understood. Here, two years of continuous field observations (2023-2024) were conducted in the Neopyropia yezoensis aquaculture area of the Subei Shoal, China, to examine the seasonal succession of epiphytic green algal communities and their natural detachment during spring. Epiphytic communities exhibited a clear and repeatable successional pattern, shifting from dominance by cold-tolerant taxa in early spring to increased prevalence of Ulva prolifer

Enteric glia regulate Paneth cell secretion and intestinal microbial ecology.

Glial cells of the enteric nervous system (ENS) interact closely with the intestinal epithelium and secrete signals that influence epithelial cell proliferation and barrier formation in vitro. Whether these interactions are important in vivo, however, is unclear because previous studies reached conflicting conclusions (Prochera and Rao, 2023). To better define the roles of enteric glia in steady state regulation of the intestinal epithelium, we characterized the glia in closest proximity to epithelial cells and found that the majority express the gene Proteolipid protein 1 (PLP1) in both mice

The complex association between the immune system and the skeletal system in osteoporosis: A study of single-cell RNA sequencing.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis (OP) is a disease characterized by decreased bone mass, deteriorated microstructure, and increased fragility and fracture risk. The diagnosis and prevention of OP and its complications have become major public health challenges. Therefore, exploring the complex ecological connections between the immune and skeletal systems may provide new insights for clinical prevention and treatment strategies. METHODS: First, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing on human lumbar lamina tissue and conducted clustering and subgroup analysis of quality-controlled single-cell transcri

Ecological forensic testing: Using multiple primers for eDNA detection of marine vertebrates in an estuarine lagoon subject to anthropogenic influences.

Many critical aquatic habitats are in close proximity to human activity (i.e., adjacent to residences, docks, marinas, etc.), and it is vital to monitor biodiversity in these and similar areas that are subject to ongoing urbanization, pollution, and other environmental disruptions. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is an accessible, non-invasive genetic technique used to detect and monitor species diversity and is a particularly useful approach in areas where traditional biodiversity monitoring methods (e.g., visual surveys or video surveillance) are challenging to conduct. In this study,

Socio-Ecologic Perspective: Barriers Complicating Post-Intensive Care Syndrome Mitigation.

Objective:Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) is a phenomenon whereby survivors of an intensive care unit (ICU) admission subsequently experience issues with physical, cognitive, or mental health status persisting beyond the acute hospitalization. Risk factors for developing PICS include prolonged mechanical ventilation with sedation and immobility. PICS is a devastating illness that negatively alters the life path of many individuals with tremendous economic impact. Methods: This qualitative study employed a grounded theory approach to understand the systemic barriers blocking mitigation and

How much does nasal cavity morphology matter? Patterns and rates of olfactory airflow in phyllostomid bats.

The morphology of the nasal cavity in mammals with a good sense of smell includes features that are thought to improve olfactory airflow, such as a dorsal conduit that delivers odours quickly to the olfactory mucosa, an enlarged olfactory recess at the back of the airway, and a clear separation of the olfactory and respiratory regions of the nose. The link between these features and having a good sense of smell has been established by functional examinations of a handful of distantly related mammalian species. In this paper, we provide the first detailed examination of olfactory airflow in a g

Predictive mapping of human risk for West Nile virus (WNV) based on environmental and socioeconomic factors.

A West Nile virus (WNV) human risk map was developed for Suffolk County, New York utilizing a case-control approach to explore the association between the risk of vector-borne WNV and habitat, landscape, virus activity, and socioeconomic variables derived from publically available datasets. Results of logistic regression modeling for the time period between 2000 and 2004 revealed that higher proportion of population with college education, increased habitat fragmentation, and proximity to WNV positive mosquito pools were strongly associated with WNV human risk. Similar to previous investigatio

High-rate continuous biodegradation of concentrated chlorinated aliphatics by a durable enrichment of methanogenic origin under carrier-dependent conditions.

The simultaneous biodegradation of toxic compounds in mixtures is a major current concern. To bioremediate a toxic mixture, we designed a strategy combining an ad-sorbent carrier with an ecological and nutritional system which allowed work close to heavily polluted conditions in nature. Starting from a methanogenic community, we developed a microbial consortium acclimated to a mixture of about 30 chlorinated aliphatics in a fixed-film stationary-bed bioreactor. Prior to the establishment of a durable period of dechlorination, an interval of progressive dechlorination of the toxic mixture was o

Divergent evolution of trace elements in groundwater-dependent lakes: Insights from multi-isotopic tracers, DOM molecular characteristics, and microbial evidence.

Groundwater-dependent lakes are highly vulnerable to trace element (TE) accumulation, yet the mechanisms controlling TE occurrence in coupled lake-groundwater systems remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the occurrence, transport, and controlling mechanisms of TEs in a representative groundwater-dependent lake system. Concentrations are reported as mean ± standard deviation (SD; LW, n = 6; GW, n = 44). Lake water (LW) and groundwater (GW) exhibited distinct TE occurrence patterns, with significantly higher concentrations of V (89.50 ± 69.00 μg L⁻¹), Mo (32.40 ± 24.30 μg L⁻¹), and U

Hierarchical feature binding in a spiking neural network model of the primate ventral visual pathway.

Feature binding - how the brain encodes which features are part of other features to form representations of the coherent objects we perceive - remains an unsolved problem in neuroscience. Despite progress towards a solution, major theories either lack detailed explanations at the neuronal level or rely on biologically unrealistic simplifications, and none adequately account for the representation of hierarchical information, which is crucial to our perception of the world. To address this, a solution termed binding by polychrony has been proposed to explain how hierarchical feature relationsh

Combined heat and exercise stress disrupt gut microbiota and promote microbial translocation.

PURPOSE: The incidence of exertional heat stroke (EHS) has increased markedly in recent decades. Although intestinal barrier dysfunction and gut microbiota alterations are increasingly implicated in EHS pathophysiology, the respective contributions of heat exposure and physical exercise to these processes remain incompletely defined. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice were assigned to Control (C), Exercise (E), Heat shock (H), or Exercise + Heat shock (HE) groups. Exercise and/or heat exposure were applied to induce exertional heat stress. Intestinal injury and permeability were assessed by histopath

Modeling the coupled PM2.5-Ozone system in China: chemical mechanisms, persistent model biases and future perspectives.

China's air quality governance has transitioned from separate particulate matter and ozone controls into a compound pollution era where particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) are linked through chemical interactions and increasingly co-occur during pollution episode. This review synthesizes the historical evolution, spatiotemporal characteristics, process-level mechanics, and modeling challenges of this coupled system. The mechanistic core relies on a shared precursor pool of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide, and ammonia, driving a non-linear "polluti

Geographic incidence of human West Nile virus in northern Virginia, USA, in relation to incidence in birds and variations in urban environment.

Previous studies have analyzed the number and location of bird infections with human incidence of West Nile virus (WNV) as well as the effects of environmental and socioeconomic factors on WNV propagation. However, such associations require more quantitative analyses. This study is intended to quantitatively analyze the relationship in eight counties/independent cities in the northern Virginia, based on an integrated analysis of spatially explicit information on precipitation, land cover, infrastructure, and demographic data using Geographical Information Systems, remote sensing, and statistic

Comparative genetic mapping in Boechera stricta, a close relative of Arabidopsis.

The angiosperm family Brassicaceae contains both the research model Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and the agricultural genus Brassica. Comparative genomics in the Brassicaceae has largely focused on direct comparisons between Arabidopsis and the species of interest. However, the reduced genome size and chromosome number (n = 5) of Arabidopsis complicates comparisons. Arabidopsis shows extensive genome and chromosome reshuffling compared to its close relatives Arabidopsis lyrata and Capsella rubella, both with n = 8. To facilitate comparative genomics across the Brassicaceae we recently ou

Lotus-fish co-culture reshapes pond microbiota and improves ecological stability relative to fish monoculture.

INTRODUCTION: The lotus-fish co-culture ponds (LP) is a widely applied integrated aquaculture system in China. However, research on the micro-ecology of aquaculture in lotus ponds is still insufficient. This study explored the dynamic patterns of organic matter composition, as well as algal and bacterial community structures in LP and MP. METHODS: A total of six independent ponds were used in this study: three lotus ponds designated as the lotus-fish co-culture ponds group (A1, A2, A3), and the other three conventional earthen ponds serving as the fish monoculture ponds group (B1, B2, B3). Micro- and Nanoplastics as Drivers and Modulators of Hepatotoxicity in Zebrafish (Danio rerio): Interactions with Environmental Co-Contaminants and Molecular Mechanisms.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) have emerged as pervasive contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, raising concerns regarding their biological impacts on aquatic organisms. The liver plays a central role in metabolism, detoxification, and immune regulation, making it particularly vulnerable to MNP-induced toxicity. Importantly, MNPs also function as vectors and modulators of co-occurring environmental contaminants, including heavy metals, pesticides, antibiotics, PFASs, algal toxins, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), thereby influencing contaminant bioavailability and hepatic toxicity. Functional and microstructural biomarkers of repetitive mild head injury in a conscious momentum exchange mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) represents a significant public health concern, yet preclinical models have been limited by methodological confounds including anesthesia, restricted head motion, and skull fracture. NEW METHOD: This study adapted the momentum exchange model, previously validated only in rats, for use in awake mice during their active circadian phase, creating the first closed-head, acceleration-driven mTBI model in conscious mice. Adult C57BL/6 mice (N = 18, 50% female) received either repetitive head impacts (0.34 J energy input at 3.7 m/s) or sham
