Risk of readmission among individuals with cannabis use disorder during a 15-year cohort study: the impact of socio-economic factors and psychiatric comorbidity.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is one of the main reasons for seeking substance treatment in the Nordic countries, but there are few studies on readmission to care. We aimed to characterize CUD readmission and estimate the magnitude of how socio-economic factors and psychiatric comorbidity influence the risk of CUD readmission. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a nation-wide cohort study carried out between 2001 and 2016 in Sweden. The participants were individuals with CUD, aged 17 years and above (n = 12 143). MEASUREMENTS: Information on predictors was obtained f

Factors related to and economic implications of inhospital death in German lung cancer patients - results of a Nationwide health insurance claims data based study.

BACKGROUND: When patients die in a hospital their quality of life is lower than when they die at home or in a hospice. Despite efforts to improve palliative care supply structures, still about 60% of lung cancer patients die in a hospital. Studies have examined factors related to inhospital death in lung cancer patients, yet none used data of a representative German population, additionally including economic aspects. This study aimed to identify factors related to inhospital death in German lung cancer patients and analysed resulting costs. METHODS: We analysed a dataset of health insurance

The contribution of social and economic factors to accelerated biological aging differences between non-Hispanic Black and White adults in the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Biological aging predicts health outcomes beyond chronological age. The relative contribution of social, economic, and health factors to biological aging differences between Black and White adults remains unclear. METHODS: In a cross-sectional analysis of 2086 community-dwelling adults aged ≥60 years from the 2016 Health and Retirement Study (1757 non-Hispanic White; 329 non-Hispanic Black), biological age was measured using DNA methylation-based GrimAge. Accelerated aging was defined as having a biological age older than expected for one's chronological age. We used logistic regr

Vaccination against seasonal influenza and socio-economic and environmental factors as determinants of the geographic variation of COVID-19 incidence and mortality in the Italian elderly.

BACKGROUND: A possible protective effect of seasonal influenza vaccination against the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic has been suggested. METHODS: We used publicly available data bases to explore the hypothesis as well as the effect of multiple social and environmental factors in the 20 Italian regions. RESULTS: Our results suggest that vaccination against seasonal influenza might beneficially impact on incidence and severity of the novel corona virus epidemic. Population density and vehicular traffic were also moderately associated with cumulative incidence of COVID-19. None of the other v

The antibiotic resistance and risk heterogeneity between urban and rural rivers in a pharmaceutical industry dominated city in China: The importance of social-economic factors.

Rivers are important environmental sources of human exposure to antibiotic resistance. Many factors can change antibiotic resistance in rivers, including bacterial communities, human activities, and environmental factors. However, the systematic comparison of the differences in antibiotics resistance and risks between urban rivers (URs) and rural rivers (RRs) in a pharmaceutical industry dominated city is still rare. In this study, Shijiazhuang City (China) was selected as an example to compare the differences in antibiotics resistance and risks between URs and RRs. The results showed higher c

Night soil fertilizer use and parasitic infections in ancient China: a preliminary study of agricultural practices, economic factors and disease ecology in the Song dynasty.

This study examines the relationship between parasitic infections and agricultural innovations in China during the Song dynasty (960-1279 CE), particularly how the widespread use of night soil (human excrement) as fertilizer affected public health. The introduction of Champa rice and the expansion of double cropping systems substantially increased agricultural productivity and supported population growth but also intensified human-environment interactions that facilitated parasite transmission. The night soil was routinely transported from urban to rural areas to improve soil fertility and cro

Beyond the global motion deficit hypothesis of developmental dyslexia: A cross-sectional study of visual, cognitive, and socio-economic factors influencing reading ability in children.

Although primarily conceptualized as a disorder of phonological awareness, developmental dyslexia is often associated with broader problems perceiving and attending to transient or rapidly-moving visual stimuli. However, the extent to which such visual deficits represent the cause or the consequence of dyslexia remains contentious, and very little research has examined the relative contributions of phonological, visual, and other variables to reading performance more broadly. We measured visual sensitivity to global motion (GM) and global form (GF), performance on various language and other co

Demographic, socio-economic, behavioral and clinical factors predicting virologic failure with generic fixed-dose combination antiretroviral therapy before universal health insurance coverage in northern Thailand.

We conducted a 2-year prospective cohort study to investigate multiple aspects of factors predicting the outcome of fixed-dose combination antiretroviral (ARV) therapy with lamivudine, stavudine, and nevirapine (GPOvir) at a government referral hospital in northern Thailand. At 6 and 24 months after the initiation of GPOvir, viral load (VL) was measured to determine virologic failure (>400 RNA copies/ml) and demographic, socio-economic, behavioral and clinical data were collected. From 10 April 2002 to 31 January 2004, 409 patients participated in this study: 64/364 (17.0%) at 6 months and 55/

Economic factors influencing utilization of world health organization recommended ANC visits among women in Jordan: an analysis of Jordan population and family health survey 2023.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal care (ANC) is crucial for reducing maternal and neonatal mortality by identifying and managing complications early during pregnancy. In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated its guidelines, recommending a minimum of eight ANC visits to improve maternal health outcomes. Despite Jordan's efforts to enhance maternal healthcare, disparities in ANC utilization persist, particularly among vulnerable populations such as refugees. This study aimed to assess the economic factors influencing utilization of the WHO-recommended eight ANC visits among women in Jordan. MET

Daily defined dose-costs have a stronger influence on antibacterial drug prescriptions in Germany than bacterial resistance: economic factors are more important than scientific evidence.

Previous research from our group revealed a strong association between daily defined dose (DDD)-costs and -prescriptions of antibacterial drugs in Germany ( https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38842562/ ; https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39042156/ ). These data indicate that low costs are major driver of high prescription numbers. This study examines the relationship between bacterial resistance and DDD-prescriptions of antibacterial drugs using data from the Arzneiverordnungsreport (AVR) from 2008 to 2022 and the Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance (ARS) statistics provided by the Robert Koch Insti
