The WNT10A gene in ectodermal dysplasias and selective tooth agenesis.

Mutations in the WNT10A gene were first detected in the rare syndrome odonto-onycho-dermal dysplasia (OODD, OMIM257980) but have now also been found to cause about 35-50% of selective tooth agenesis (STHAG4, OMIM150400), a common disorder that mostly affects the permanent dentition. In our random sample of tooth agenesis patients, 40% had at least one mutation in the WNT10A gene. The WNT10A Phe228Ile variant alone reached an allele frequency of 0.21 in the tooth agenesis cohort, about 10 times higher than the allele frequency reported in large SNP databases for Caucasian populations. Patients

Retinal tear presenting in a patient with ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia.

PURPOSE: This article aims to report a case of known ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia in a young male patient who subsequently was found to have a retinal tear and localized retinal detachment. CASE REPORT: This is a case report of a 22-year-old white male patient with a history of ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia. Our patient initially presented with an acute exacerbation of bilateral, red, irritated eyes. No recent changes in vision were reported. The patient's ocular surface disease was consistent with ectrodermal dysplasia syndrome. However, a dilated fundus examination revealed an asym…

Hypohidrotic and hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: a report of two cases.

Ectodermal dysplasias are a large group of syndromes characterized by anomalies in the structures of ectodermal origin. There are 2 major types of this disorder, based on clinical findings: hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. This clinical classification is very important because clinical professionals involved with this disease need first a clear and practical method of diagnosis. The main oral manifestation of ectodermal dysplasia may be expressed as hypodontia. Thus, dental professionals may be the first to diagnose ectodermal dysplasia. The present article …

An insight into the genesis of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia in a case report.

Hypohidrotic (anhidrotic) ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a congenital syndrome characterized by sparse hair, oligodontia, and reduced sweating. It is estimated to affect at least one in 17000 people worldwide. We report a rare case of HED in a 14-year-old male child patient which extraorally manifested as alopecia, scanty eyebrow and eye lashes, frontal bossing, depressed nasal bridge, and full and everted lips. Intraoral examination revealed complete anodontia of the deciduous teeth and partial anodontia of the permanent teeth. It is usually inherited as an X-linked recessive trait caused by m…

Ectodermal dysplasia with amastia: a case of one-step reconstruction.

Background. Female patients presenting amastia associated with ectodermal dysplasia are not frequently encountered, but they are of great clinical interest and surgically demanding. Traditionally, skin alterations related to Ectodermal Dysplasia have addressed plastic surgeons to perform a two-stage approach in amastia associated with this congenital pathologic condition. This article describes an alternative method for correcting this deformity trough a mammary reconstruction in one surgical stage. Materials and Methods. We report a case of 26-year-old female patient with bilateral amastia as…

[Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. Report of a rare mutation in EDA1].

BACKGROUND: Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a rare inherited disorder seen mainly in the X-linked recessive form. We report the case of a Lebanese family in which the mother transmitted an uncommon missense mutation to three of her sons. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 23-year-old patient presented with keloids in nodular acne. The physical examination showed fine and sparse hair, thick everted lips and dental defects. A detailed history revealed congenital anhidrosis. The patient's, seven-year-old and four-year-old brothers had the same characteristic facial morphology and were also presenting an…

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with true anodontia of the primary dentition.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a rare congenital hereditary entity. The most commonly observed forms of ectodermal dysplasia are the hidrotic and hypohidrotic types; discrimination is based on the absence or presence of sweat glands. In this report, a child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia having true anodontia of the primary dentition is presented. Physical, mental, and intraoral examinations were performed. Photographs and occlusal and panoramic radiographs were taken. A medical consultation and biopsies were requested. Mentally, the patient was normal. His hair and eyebrows were light colore…

Treatment strategy for patients with ectodermal dysplasia: a case report.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a hereditary condition characterized by abnormal development of the skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, and the stomatognathic system. There are many different types of ectodermal dysplasia of which X-linked anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is the most common. Multiple genes have been discovered to cause ectodermal dysplasias. With any form of ED, children may display a range of symptoms and challenging rehabilitation. This clinical report presents the treatment plan for a young patient with ED and anodontia requiring prosthetic restoration.

Orthodontic and prosthodontic treatment of ectodermal dysplasia--a case report.

In addition to its other symptoms, ectodermal dysplasia causes anodontia and hypodontia intraorally. Partial or total anodontia results in some loss of function, such as chewing, and affects aesthetics. Prosthodontic rehabilitation can be accomplished with fixed, overdenture, complete, or implant-retained prostheses. For rehabilitation, it is crucial to know the age, number and condition of present teeth, and the state of growth of the patient. A 10-year-old male patient who visited our clinic was treated by a multi-disciplinary team of surgeons, orthodontists, and prosthodontists. An overdent…

Nasopharyngeal rhabdomyosarcoma in a patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia syndrome.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome) is characterized by partial or complete absence of sweat glands, hypotrichosis, hypodontia, prominent frontal ridges and chin, saddle nose, sunken cheeks, thick, everted lips, large ears and sparse hair. While association of other ectodermal dysplasia syndromes with tumors such a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, hamartoma, keratoakanthoma, Merkel-cell cancer, squamous-cell carcinoma, syringofibroadenomatosis has been reported, association of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and a tumor has not been reported. In a five-year-old male p…

Placement of an endosseous implant in a growing child with ectodermal dysplasia.

This article reports placement of a single mandibular endosseous implant in a 5-year-old patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and oligodontia. This congenital anomaly does not appear to retard healing and the osseointegration remains after 5 1/2 years of loading. Surgical, prosthodontic, and growth and development considerations are presented.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis of the cranial dura and anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

A 2-year-old amerasian male with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (Christ-Siemens-Touraine Syndrome) was admitted for status epilepticus and Mycobacteria avium-intracellulare infection. A computed tomography scan of the head revealed a mass thought to be a subdural hematoma. The patient died following overwhelming Mycobacteria avium-intracellular and Pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis. Autopsy revealed extensive extramedullary hematopoiesis of the dura forming a tumor-like thickening with focal subdural hemorrhage. To our knowledge, this is the first report of extramedullary hematopoiesis of the cra…

Acute miliary tuberculosis in a child with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

A 20-month-old boy with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia developed fever and papulopustular skin lesions. A skin biopsy showed the histologic changes of acute miliary tuberculosis. Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is characterized by an absence of seromucous glands in the oropharynx and tracheobronchial tree, making children with this disease prone to viral and bacterial respiratory infections. Mild defects in their immunologic system have also been reported. We suggest that these abnormalities may have predisposed the patient to this rare form of cutaneous tuberculosis.

Keratopathy in a family with the ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome.

Four members of a family with the ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome and associated keratopathy are presented. The main features of this syndrome include lobster-claw deformities of the hands and feet, abnormalities of the hair and teeth, cleft lip and palate, nasolacrimal abnormalities, and a progressive keratopathy ranging in severity from an asymptomatic pannus to bilateral dense corneal scarring and neovascularization. Despite congenital limb abnormalities, the major functional disability of three of these patients stems from severe photophobia and decreased visual a…

Athelia in a female infant - heterozygous for anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

The case of a female infant with athelia is reported. Her mother, maternal aunt and grandmother show hypodontia, sparse hair and small breasts associated with mammillary hypoplasia. The clinical features and the results of MINOR's sweat test suggest a heterozygous state of anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia as the most likely explanation.
