Auto-photovoice: A reflexive extension of photovoice methodology and its practice in a COVID-quarantined community psychology course.

This article introduces "auto-photovoice," a novel self-reflexive extension of photovoice methodology where participant-researchers turn the camera on themselves to explore their personal experiences and observations of a phenomenon. In our exemplar project, students and faculty codesigned and implemented auto-photovoice methodology during a 10-week online community psychology graduate seminar during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine. Our photos addressed the prompt, "What inequities do we experience and witness in well-being related to COVID-19?" The initial analysis of weekly discussions of t

Optimizing online teaching effectiveness in elementary education: Exploring multifaceted pathways based fsQCA analysis.

The effectiveness of online teaching has emerged as a critical concern during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a particular emphasis on fostering a sustained interest in online instruction among educators. This study employs fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to investigate the complex causal relationships that underpin the online teaching efficacy of elementary school teachers. A comprehensive questionnaire was administered to 171 elementary school teachers, capturing their perspectives across six key dimensions: the acceptability of online teaching, teachers' Technological Pedagog

Advancing quantitative clinical pharmacology competencies in Francophone Africa through an on-line learning framework.

Clinical pharmacology and pharmacometrics are central to understanding patient response to new and existing therapies, yet access to training in Africa remains limited, particularly in francophone countries where language is a barrier. We report the design and implementation of a 12-week French-language online course combining asynchronous lessons with live interactive sessions. The inaugural cohort enrolled 72 students from Senegal (n = 37), Tunisia (n = 24), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (n = 11). While only one-third completed the full program, all survey respondents judged the c

Immigrant Origin and Disability Increase Risk for Anxiety Among Youth During COVID-19: The Role of Unmet Needs for Support in Distance Learning and Family Conflicts.

PURPOSE: Shifting to distance learning due to COVID-19 may decrease teacher support and increase family conflicts, potentially increasing anxiety. Nevertheless, there is scarce information on this topic among disability and/or immigrant-origin groups. Thus, we investigated whether these minority groups reported more anxiety than the reference group-Finnish-origin youth without disabilities-and whether unmet needs for support in distance learning and family conflicts mediated differences in anxiety during the pandemic. Differences in these mediators were also investigated. METHODS: Population-

The impact of virtual learning on students' educational behavior and pervasiveness of depression among university students due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: One of the worst pandemics of recent memory, COVID-19, severely impacted the public. In particular, students were physically and mentally affected by the lockdown and the shift from physical person-to-person classrooms to virtual learning (online classes). This increased the prevalence of psychological stress, anxiety, and depression among university students. In this study, we investigated the depression levels in Saudi Arabian university students who were learning virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic and examined its impact on their educational proficiency. METHODS: The st

Assessment of HEADS UP online training as an educational intervention for sports officials/athletic trainers.

BACKGROUND: Sports- and recreation-related concussions are a common injury among children. Sports officials (SOs) and athletic trainers (ATs) are integral to setting the stage for safe play and managing concussions when they occur, and significant numbers of both groups have completed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's HEADS UP online concussion training course. However, the utility of the course for these audiences has not been assessed. We hypothesized that sports officials' and athletic trainers' concussion-related knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral intentions will improve f

Homophily in the career mobility of China's political elite.

We argue that leadership promotion in China's political elite relies on homophily for signals of trustworthiness and future cooperative behavior more than on economic performance. We first point to the limitation of the economic performance argument from within the framework of China's specific M-form state structure, and then we proffer a sociological explanation for why higher-level elites in China rely on homophilous associations in recruiting middle-level elites to the top positions of state. Using a unique dataset covering China's provincial leaders from 1979 to 2011, we develop a homophi

E-learning-based speech therapy: a web application for speech training.

Abstract In The Netherlands, a web application for speech training, E-learning-based speech therapy (EST), has been developed for patients with dysarthria, a speech disorder resulting from acquired neurological impairments such as stroke or Parkinson's disease. In this report, the EST infrastructure and its potentials for both therapists and patients are elucidated. EST provides patients with dysarthria the opportunity to engage in intensive speech training in their own environment, in addition to undergoing the traditional face-to-face therapy. Moreover, patients with chronic dysarthria can u

Differences in risk perception, knowledge and protective behaviour regarding COVID-19 by education level among women and men in Germany. Results from the COVID-19 Snapshot Monitoring (COSMO) study.

The main strategy for combatting SARS-CoV-2 infections in 2020 consisted of behavioural regulations including contact reduction, maintaining distance, hand hygiene, and mask wearing. COVID-19-related risk perception and knowledge may influence protective behaviour, and education could be an important determinant. The current study investigated differences by education level in risk perception, knowledge and protective behaviour regarding COVID-19 in Germany, exploring the development of the pandemic over time. The COVID-19 Snapshot Monitoring study is a repeated cross-sectional online survey c

Reading achievement among under-resourced K-2 students before, during, and after COVID-19 educational disruptions.

COVID-19 disrupted early reading development, especially for under-resourced students. Few studies have evaluated early reading skill recovery after the return to in-person instruction. This study tracked reading achievement among 236,701 kindergarten through second-grade students from the academic year 2019-2020 to 2023-2024 (48.7% female; 69.8% Latine). Children had lower reading performance and less growth during remote instruction (2020-2021) compared with the pre-COVID cohort. Reading scores improved once in-person learning resumed. Kindergarten students who experienced remote instruction

A comparison of staff perceptions of lecture capture before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a rapid transition from face-to-face to mostly online learning in higher education. As staff became more familiar with teaching technology, their perception of online learning became more positive, and many expected substantial changes towards blended learning after the pandemic. This study aimed to investigate staff perceptions about lecture capture before and after the pandemic. A mixed-method survey of staff teaching biosciences was used to explore staff perceptions about the impact of lecture capture on student learning and on themselves. We found no significan

Regional Pediatric Education and Assistance Collaborative for Hospice Nurses (REACH): A Tele-Educational Intervention.

Despite the well-known benefits of hospice care for seriously ill children and their families, pediatric hospice services remain difficult to access across community settings. The vast majority of hospice organizations utilize an adult-focused paradigm, in which adult-trained providers often lack the requisite pediatric-specific education to provide high-quality hospice care for children and families. Hospice nurses self-report significant discomfort with pediatric care provision, resulting in hesitation by hospice agencies to accept pediatric patients, further exacerbating deficits in pediatr

Exploring the student experience of integrating blended learning to crime scene teaching using eXtended reality to complement in situ practical learning.

Forensic Science teaching in higher education requires hands-on investigative field and laboratory skills, especially when aiming to meet accreditation standards. In situ teaching with large cohorts can prove challenging and time intensive. The implementation of virtual learning resources has seen an increase since the Covid-19 pandemic when remote learning was essential. This project aims to explore the application of complementary eXtended reality crime scenes for forensic science programmes as a means of supporting in situ investigative skills through insight into student's experience of a
